Minnesota has to fire Pitino

Submitted by Rambling Wolverine on

Can't see how Minnesota can retain Coach Richard Pitino after the way they imploded during BIG play.

Louisville needs a coach.

Should have never fired Tubby Smith. He has the same number of national titles as Izzo.

Lil' Ricky is going to get fired, but probably not this year.

He's recruited better than any coach they've had since Haskins and got unlucky this year with all the injuries and suspensions.  They'll have decent to good players coming back next year in Curry, Coffey, Murphy, and McBrayer.  They need Isiah Washington to make a jump at point guard, which it looked like he was in the process of at the end of the year, and someone to be a competent center.  The bench will be thin again, but I think they can be a fringe tournament team if everyone stays on the court.

I'm not a huge basketball fan, but remember when Minnesota hired Tubby and we heired JB. I think the 1st few years, we all thought Tubby was the better coach/ hire and if JB could just get us to the tourney 2-3 years in a row, he could retire and we could hire a real coach.

Man, how wrong we (and certainly I) was. Thankfully, I don't know what I'm talking about!

Here's a quote from a Gopher season ticket holder:

"This season felt like a new low as it started with so much promise. On top of tonight's loss I received an email telling me my season tickets would cost more next year. Needless to say this prompted an unhappy phone call to the fans relations department."

Given the attrition among Gopher players this year, I would think Pitino will be given at least one more year.  Pitino has recruited fairly well (that is, if you excuse the off-court behavior of some of his recruits), but the team seems to depend too much on one-on-one play on offense.  It's almost like watching playground ball.  They have some talented players, but there seems to be little in the way of a coherent strategy.

He's got another year anyway. They made the tournament last year and fielded a pretty good squad with arguably the best player in the conference in Nate Mason. That bought him some time.

But if they tank again next year or anything new surrounding Lynch comes out where Pitino had a hand in it, Minnesota's hands will effectively be tied at that point.
