Michigan wins over Top-10 teams all-time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Just a list I wanted to put out there since we finally kicked that door down again last season by getting one.

Some stats-

  • 62 wins all-time over AP Top-10 teams
  • Most success has been against #8. Michigan is 11-6 against #8.

Wonder how that record compares to other teams against top 10? Seems bad.

Did you record which team we had the best record against when they were ranked in the top 10?

interesting off-season fodder here, WD. Thanks for pulling it together. I like two of our best top 10 records being against MSU/OSU. the fact that we didn't improve that OSU record last year still makes me stomach burn.

Found this but it is only 1936-2010. This is teams vs teams that were ranked top 10 at the time of the game. Not exactly the same but makes this seem not as awful as it looks.

1. USC: 76-74-7 (0.50637)

2. Oklahoma: 69-71-4 (0.49306)

3. Notre Dame: 80-87-6 (0.47977)

4. Michigan: 70-77-6 (0.47712)

5. Texas: 65-75-4 (0.46528)

6. Ohio State: 59-71-9 (0.45683)

7. Florida State: 44-55-3 (0.44608)

8. Miami (FL): 52-66-1 (0.44118)

9. Alabama: 59-75-0 (0.44030)

10. UCLA: 50-77-5 (0.39773)

Data is from CFBTrivia which appears to be no longer maintained so I can't update it so I'm sure it's a bit different (or a lot different for Alabama).

The difference between your list and the original list is:

1.  It's complete

2.  It includes top 10 teams from the coaches poll.

I was a Sophomore in 1994 when we beat colorado State; I didn't realize until
Now that the Rams were a top 10 team that game. It was such a let down to be in such a second tier Bowl that it was a hollow game (and victory)

Fun topic, but I think you're missing at least a couple of wins.

From 1996: #11 UM 20 @ #5 Colorado 13

From 2005: UM 27 vs. #8 PSU 25

Lloyd Carr was supposedly 19-8 against top 10 teams, which might be the most impressive line on his resume aside from (or maybe including) the 1997 national title.

Colorado in Boulder. That was the fail Mary game. Lloyd screwed up the clock management and had Dreisbach take a knee on 4th down just a little too early giving Colorado the ball with a second left on the clock at our own 38 yard line. Another Hail Mary attempt...but from a much closer distance this time.

So much pacing I did during that timeout. Even Keith Jackson and Bob Griese were spooked over the fact the game was ending this way again.

Thankfully it fell just incomplete. That was the last really good Colorado team before the program went into the crapper for the next decade.

I'm working on something similar.

Amazing fact that no one's mentioned: in meetings where both teams are ranked in The Game, the record stands at 20-20-4.

Even more amazing is that there have only been 9 meetings ever where both teams were unranked since the AP poll began in 1936.

OSU has faced Michigan as an unranked team 14 times and Michigan has faced OSU while unranked 14 times.

I'm curious how this list would change if you looked at season's ending ranking. 2008 Wisconsin turned out to be not-that-good, and that was a September game.

2 wins over top ten teams in a season seems to be about the best you can expect to average over multiple seasons. Even then, you're also going to lose some. If 62-80-6 is close to accurate, it will likely take Michigan more than a decade to get to .500.

boxedlunch

Michigan is 69-84-6 against AP top 10 teams.

Michigan is 13-6 vs AP #8 teams, which is the top percentage vs top 10 teams.

Michigan is 34-40-4 as an AP top 10 team vs the same.

You are missing:

a victory over #8 Penn in 1940

A victory over #5 Northwestern in 1941

A victory over #9 Wisconsin in 1947

etc...

I built my SuperGuide using Bentley and other records but this is rather ridiculous how off they are on something as important as Football.

Bentley is who provides MGoBlue with the official record books and they are also without this stuff.

What an eye-opening mess. And here I thought the AD's Football books could be considered 90% accurate.
