Michigan leading Oklahoma going into their final rotation--Floor. Barring a huge upset, Sam Mikulak is most likely the All-Around National Champion.

Michigan leads Oklahoma 367.850 to 367.350.

but it sounds like OU still has to go NBA Jamz on this high bar routine to catch up. Penn State is out of control on that jumpy thing. More than half of their guys have fallen over

That was a great get from the West Coast!  The only lost meets they had was when he was injured. . . Well done Coach Golder and the Staff.  His third National Title at Michigan!

where does this put us in the directors cup race ?

and where do we rank in comparison with stanford right now and the the rest of the spring sports ?

This puts us at #1 in the directors cup through the winter season.  We will end up with a 20-30 point lead or so over Stanford.  Unfortunately, Stanford should gain at least 100 points on Michigan in the spring sports.  More likely 200.

A lot of unlikely things would have to happen for Michigan to maintain their lead, but this still might be the closest race anybody has given Stanford in the last decade.

It has been 9 years since anybody but Stanford had the lead at this point in the season, though.  Michigan led Stanford by 60 at the end of the winter season of 2004, but ended up losing by 107 points in the final standings.

Softball has the horses to make a run in the NCAAs and Baseball could be a darkhorse. They win the B1G Tournament, they're in. And this is a team that has won 10 of their last 11.

Also don't forget about Men's AND Women's Tennis who are both playing for B1G Regular Season Championships tomorrow and most likely have all but clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Yes, that's all true.  But let's go over the rankings, sport-by-sport:

Spring sports where Stanford is ranked ahead of Michigan

W Water Polo:  Stanford #1, Michigan #19.
M Volleyball:  Stanford #6, Michigan does not sponsor
W Golf:  Stanford #12, Michigan unranked
W Lacrosse:  Stanford #15, Michigan does not sponsor
M Golf:  Stanford #9, Michigan unranked
W Rowing:  Stanford #9, Michigan #13
W Track:  Stanford #9, Michigan unranked

Spring sports where Michigan is ranked ahead of Stanford

Softball:  Michigan #9, Stanford #16
W Tennis:  Michigan #6, Stanford #12

Spring sports where neither team is ranked

M Track:  both unranked
M Tennis:  both unranked
Baseball:  both unranked
M Lacrosse:  M unranked, Stanford does not sponsor

I think even taking a reasonable best case scenario for each of these sports leaves Stanford 100 points ahead of Michigan.

I don't rankings count towards it. Doesn't it go by what they do in the NCAA Tournament.

Stanford was hosting a regional in Volleyball and Michigan destroyed them to go onto the Final 4 so crazier things have happened. Water Polo is a West Coast game.

I would agree that it would be extremely unlikely that Michigan can hold off the spring onslaught from Stanford. But let us not forget that a school can only count ten men's and ten women's sports towards their totals, so not all of those ranked Stanford teams are even going to register points. There are a few other schools (UCLA, Florida among them) likely to have a strong spring sport showing. So it is indeed a long shot for Michigan to hold onto its current first place standing, but not impossible.

Regardless, it has been a great year for Wolverine athletic teams and a top five finish in the Director's Cup seems all but assured.

I don't want to belabor this, because this should be about the amazing accomplishment of the Michigan gymnastics team, but I am not saying it's impossible to win the Directors Cup, just highly unlikely.

I am aware of the scoring rules, but even taking those rules into account, over the last 10 years Stanford has added an average of 426 points every spring, and Michigan has added an average of 271 points.  That's 155 points Stanford gains on Michigan in the typical spring.  Michigan's lead is currently 11.5 points.  It's do-able, but it takes an unexpectedly terrible spring from Stanford and some major upsets by Michigan.  Let's hope it happens that way.

Congratulations to the gymnastics team and to Sam Mikulak for their NCAA championships!

This is huge. Get legitimate indoor & outdoor track & field facilities along with an overhaul of Cliff Keen and we'll be right there with Stanford every year. When the stars align, we'll take em out.

Congratulations guys! Hail to the Victors.

Side note...Michigan jumped to 2nd place in the Directors (Stanford) Cup after the basketball team made the championship game. This may put them in first!

My first, and probably only, National Championship of any kind.  Penn State was ranked #1 all year, and this was in their house (and my tickets were in the midst of their huge and enthusiastic crowd).  And Oklahoma, ranked #2, was the only other team Michigan had lost to.  But Michigan was finally (supposedly) healthy and at full strength just in time for the Big Tens, and it showed.  As for being happy Mikulak was finally healthy, when he was presented the All-Around trophy and after the runners-up (including #2 Adrian de los Angeles) had been given theirs, the announcer again congratulated Sam for his victory, and I do believe he added "...who performed tonight with a sprained ankle!"  And Sam smiled.

EDIT: Went to the event finals today and was talking to a woman who turned out to be Sam's mother if the announcer's statement about Sam having a sprained ankle was correct.  No, it was Adrian de los Angeles.  We'd noticed Adrian limping a bit after his vault but forgot about it, and he still managed to come in second in the all-around.
