Running game was disappointing save for a couple runs late in the 4th. They need to run Smith north/south. With the big, slow receivers we recruited, it would be nice to see some back shoulder stuff. Also manufacture some offense. Put the ball in Norfleet's hands and let him work. All we have is him and Funch.

was there for the taking, but either the WRs don't know how to catch those, or Gardner was just inaccurate and they weren't expecting them. Either way, we had at least 3 back shoulder opportunities that went incomplete.

The run game came alive just when we needed it to. I was amused near the end when we came out of the huddle with 5 seconds left, got the snap off, and ran for a first down. Very "B1GGG".

when the receivers catch the ball. In particular, two in the first quarter. I'm accustomed to seeing balls like them get dropped. Today they were catches.

What if Gardner's ankle sidelines him for a few weeks....does Bellomy start against MSU?  He looked like a deer in the headlights handing the ball off at home versus PSU.....

This offense is atrocious. Even with a healthy Gardner, the beatdown in East Lansing is a foregone conclusion. Without him, I can't even imagine how bad it will be. How did a team that scored 41 against ND last year get this horrible? We were one miraculous catch away from no TDs in this game.

not very impressive tonight...

my question is do we ever even run routes deeper than 20 yards.... cause we aren't that hard to defend against...

Thought we would have seen more Hayes

I am unclear if it is OL pass protect related, but why can't you give Funchess a chance to make a big play vertically a couple of times each half.

Did what they need to to win.

I'm legitimately horrified for whoever starts against MSU. Gardner gives us our best shot to win, but they killed him last year and will undoubtedly do it again. I can't imagine how much worse it'd be if Morris or Bellomy have to start.

MSU will be out for blood in 2 weeks, and you can guarantee they'll play like it too. Doesn't matter how bad we are.

I hear ya.  Nuss needs to incorporate some designed rollouts to mix it up a bit, and Devin needs to dump instead of taking sacks.  He won't be able to sit in the pocket all game - they'll be bringing it.  Nuss has two weeks to put some serious wrinkles in this offense.  The D needs to show up (and scores some points?), and we need some breaks.

Oh, and how about pullin' a 180 on road-game mentality.  This staff has sucked in that regard.  Bring in a sports psych or two, and/or former player(s) to address the team.  Next Saturday show the team a double-feature of Rocky, followed by the 1980 USA vs. Russia hockey game.  DO SOMETHING.

Feed off the crowd hostility, Leave it all on the field.  Play some pissed-off road-dawg football.

In the event anyone wants a quick summary of the numbers, we managed 256 yards of offense on 57 plays, which is good for a "meh" 4.49 yards per play on average, but against Penn State - at least in reality - that's probably good enough, and indeed it was. It came down to 26 pass attempts with 16 completions over 192 yards, so 7.38 yards per attempt and an even 12 yards per completion. The rushing offense....ehh....31 attempts and 64 yards, but then rushing for between 2-2.5 yards per carry was a thing in this game.

It was almost more maddening than anything to see that Gardner run for 20 yards. Obviously they couldn't do it later because of his ankle, but this offense would be so much better if they used his goddamn legs. Hoke said they're worried about injuries, but the stats have shown that really doesn't matter. Not to mention Gardner and Morris are getting hammered in this offense anyway. It's not gonna be worse.

Hayes seems like a far more decisive runner than Smith. I bet the snap counts between the two even out a bit. Hayes can be more than just a passing down back.

at least RB-Screen appears now to be In The O-Playbook.  Which is a Step In The Right Direction.

one of course WAS the Gardner INT--  the other was earlier, kinda interesting

--  Waggle Right, Thow Back Left

The WAGGLE Right play flows from 33-Zone FAKE RunPlay to LEFT.  And then Throwback Left.  I guess it was Hayes who caught the ball. Got 8-yds or something.  Good enough for me.

The Gardner-INT, was What It Was.  It was Conventional Screen Right.  The QB Toss-Float Throw for THIS is TO Spot-Area, not really TO the RB.  You let the RB run To-Under the Toss-Float Throw.  Uhhh--  Gardner did not do this.

RB-Screen remains, in effect, a Timing-Technique  Play.  And you really only get 1-2 Chances IN-game, to Get It Right
