Michigan vs Penn St- A comparison

Submitted by Duval Wolverine on

I decided to do a numbers comparison of the two teams after the first three games, so here we go...

  • Michigan is scoring 53.0 ppg while giving up 15.0 ppg.  Penn st is scoring 35.3 ppg while giving up 27.3 ppg.

  • Michigan is averaging 253.3 yds passing per game and 197.6 yds rushing per game.  Penn st is averaging 276 yd passing per game and 111.6 yds rushing per game.

  • On defense, Michigan has allowed 156 yds passing per game and three passing touchdowns; Michigan has also allowed 140 yds rushing per game and two rushing touchdowns.

  • On defense, Penn St has allowed 168 yds passing per game and three passing touchdowns; Penn St has also allowed 176.3 yds rushing per game and six rushing touchdowns

Sorry the format is not the best but I did not have the time to put this information in a nice little table!

I would say that Colorado is alot better than Temple and would put them up there with Pitt, Colorado is a lot better team than most people are giving them credit for!  I was nervous about the game all week and knew it would not be a blowout, and thats exactly what happened!  If Colorado's starting QB is able to play the rest of the season, that team can def win 8 games or more!  Outside the Washington and Stanford, no other PAC-12 team is looking really good!

But keep in mind that early in the season the advanced stats are heavily based on projections from the previous season. Temple was really good last year, but lost key players to graduation and appears not to have recovered. Colorado, OTOH, was a four-win team last season but looks much improved this year.

And Pitt lost to Oklahoma State in a shootout this weekend after Okie State only managed 27 points against a MAC defense.

I was partly nervous because Colorado basically played perfect games their first two games heading into our game.

penn state has struggled a little bit in each of their games. Even Kent State. That score is misleading.

Vegas somehow has the ability to very closely predict the outcome of games.  Vegas thought Michigan was 17 points better than colorado.  They think Michigan is 16 points better than PSU.  PSU and Colorado are equally dangerous to Michigan in the opinion of those who get paid to make those observations.

This is a bit misleading.

Vegas doesn't predict the outcome of games at all.  They're predicting betting patterns on the game... there is a huge difference there.   (And while their spread can nail the actual outcome of the game at times, they're also nowhere close at all many other times.)

A -16 spread doesn't mean they think that PSU is equally as dangerous to Michigan as Colorado.  It just means they think that the public is going to view PSU as a little bit better of a bet against Michigan than Colorado was.  It's all about getting bets as even as possible for both teams.  That's the nice safe spot that vegas is always targeting.

So, I wouldn't really use betting lines as evidence as to how good/bad a team really is.

True, but the line is also a predictor of initial public perception. So, by extension, Vegas thinks that the public perception of a game between PSU and Michigan will have nearly the same outcome as a game between Michigan and Colorado.

I will enjoy needling the PSU homers all week telling them they are barely better than Colorado.

PSU has deadly playmakers (if healthy). McSorley makes costly mistakes but he can air it out. Their defense is average. We should dominate in the trenches and I think we win by 14, but it won't be a simple walk in the park. 41-27 Michigan.
