Michigan v. Iowa Game Thread
Mates,
So if we get by Iowa, looks like we'd take on the Gophers. But, one game at a time. Go Blue, beat the hawkeyes!

I can't wait till Koach K retires so we don't have to listen to the slurping any more

Another quad 1 win, or at least close to it. Minnesota is tough. Hope we don't come out flat and overconfident.

I have to say that after the Iowa fans rushed the floor for to celebrate a January win as if it was a tournament title, watching this beat down was immensely satisfying.

Yep, Iowa is just lucky the officiating wasn't competent otherwise they would have lost by 30+.

Well done by Michigan tonight. Rinse, and repeat v. Minny.

I was 100% wrong about Iowa beating Michigan today
Great game from the D today
great game by the offense attacking the zone from Iowa today
Everyone made good decisions today and played within the scheme
this version of Michigan can make noise in both tournaments
again, I was wrong and about as wrong as a guy can be

So you knew that Simpson was going to be pissed about not being DPOY, but man. He let Bohannon get two shots off the whole game. And he didn't score. Plus his offensive game.

Can someone with basketball savvy explain to me why Roy Williams did not call timeout after getting the ball back there?
I never played competitive basketball, but I’d think with two timeouts left, you get the ball down on your side of the court, call time out with roughly 6-7 seconds left, and draw up your best play.

North Carolinas philosophy is to run and gun at all times. Down 20 up 20 they're running and some coaches dont like to let a defense get set in those situations
Most coaches however would call a timeout

Perk, a lot of coaches prefer to try attack a D in transition so they can’t get set up and get organized and locked in. There’s a good chance of a defensive breakdown in that situation. UNC didn’t look like they had a good plan to get a decent shot off in this case.

I don't have any basketball savvy, but I had the same reaction as you. I Googled something like "why doesn't Roy Williams call timeouts at the end of games," and a number of articles/threads came up. Generally, the offense doesn't have a lot of set plays -- a "freelance motion offense." He doesn't want the other side to get set; he doesn't want his own guys to panic. I also think there is a stark contrast with a coach like Beilein, who excels at Xs and Os, and is generally working with a significant talent disparity against the Dukes and UNCs of the world. (Zion was only Duke's third highest recruit last year. They signed the first, second, and fifth best recruits in the country.)
