Michigan QBs through the last 3 seasons

Submitted by BoFlex on

Had some free time last night, and decide to go back to look at the QBs that have pass through Michigan the last 3 years.

In 2015, Harbaugh started at Michigan with:

  • Jr. Shane Morris - 4*, #3 PRO, #72 overall
    • At Michigan: 47/92 (51%), 434 passing yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs
    • At CMU: 154/279 (55.9%), 1767 passing yards, 13 TDs, 11 INTs
  • RsFr. Wilton Speight - 3*, #23 PRO, #453 overall
    • At Michigan: 257/437 (58.8%). 3192 passing yards, 23 TDs, 10 INTs

Add 2 transfers for 2015:

  • RsSr. Jake Rudock: 3*, #23 PRO, #627 overall
    • At Iowa: 417/691 (60.3%), 4819 passing yards, 42 TDs, 18 INTs
    • At Michigan: 249/389 (64%), 3017 passing yards, 24 TDs, 9 INTs
  • RsSo. John O'Korn: 3*, #32 PRO, #632 overall
    • At Houston: 349/619 (56.4%), 4068 passing yards, 36 TDs, 18 INTs
      • AAC RoY (2013)
    • At Michigan: 65/116 (56%), 736 passing yards, 3 TDs, 4 INTs

Two QBs in Class of 2015:

  • Fr. Zach Gentry: 4*, #8 PRO, #175 overall
    • At Michigan: 8 receptions, 134 yards, 1 TD
  • Fr. Alex Malzone: 4*, #12 PRO, #292 overall

One QB in Class of 2016:

One QB in Class of 2017:

Two QBs in Class of 2018 (tentatively):

Definitely fair to point out that 3/6 QBs (depending on what you consider transfers) on the 2015 roster were not handpicked by Harbaugh, but also that some of his mystique of being a "QB Whisperer" came from developing outside guys (i.e. Jake Rudock, Alex Smith). When Harbaugh first got into town and loaded up on 6 scholarship QBs, people were super confident that Harbaugh was setting up a dynasty of 1st round QBs.

Now after 3 seasons later with John O'Korn, Wilton Speight, and Alex Malzone, Speight is clearly the best of the bunch, and Alex Malzone has pretty much disappeared off the face of the Earth. I sometimes wonder if QB depth was in such bad shape, why didn't Gentry get more of a shot before moving to TE? It seems like McKeon, Eubanks, Wheatley, Bunting, and Hammering Panda would have been able to anchor the TE group without Gentry.

We need...

*TO KEEP EVERYONE WE HAVE*

Add:

  • (1) Outside WR
  • (1) Blocking TE
  • (1) LT
  • (1) OG/C
  • (1) NG/DT
  • (1) ILB
  • (1) SS

That's 21 commits. Maybe grab a FB if we have 22, but that feels like a preferred walk-on to go behind Ben Mason.

I was thinking the same thing. If he maintains his level of play the rest of the season, I could see him making that leap. However, next year looks really promising, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Hot damn that defense looks nasty. He might pull the Lewan and stay to see if he can be on a national championship team.

It has been a little surprising how well Dantonio has done at the position with the level of talent he brings in: 1. Brian Hoyer: 3*, #18 PRO, #368 overall 2. Kirk Cousins: 3*, #49 PRO, #1302 overall 3. Connor Cook: 3*, #33 PRO, #949 overall 4. Brian Lewerke: 3*, #16 PRO, #406 overall Brian Hoyer was even a John L. Smith holdover that Dantonio didn’t even get until 2007 as a RsJr.

What I don't get about the QB situation.

O'Korn was the ACC Fresh of the Year.  I haven't seen anything but a few highlights, but what I've seen on the field here makes me wonder how?  Did he forget by his soph year how to check down?

Peters was the only QB we saw in the spring game who looked like he could actually make reads & put the ball where we might actually see completed passes.  With Speight & O'Korn it doesn't seem like they progressed much since then.  How bad could Peters be?  I do get that they haven't had a game yet this season where you can put him in for a couple series just to see what he can do without it potentially losing the game.

Other teams have been able to get by (if not even succeed) with TRUE freshmen at QB.  The pro-style offense that's run is obviously complicated, but when the line isn't blocking well & the young recievers aren't getting open (or dropping it if they do) shouldn't there be some sort of paring down the offense to get them to try getting them familiar enough with a smaller set of plays to be effective?

Mid-October isn't the time to fix coaching, but this season is nowhere near over.  O'Korn looked decent against Purdue.  Was that due to him operating on a limited playbook as a backup?  It couldn't have been all luck.

I will say something positive about O'Korn that I haven't seen mentioned before... He may have the quickest dropback I have ever seen.

Oh... random thought moment... I hope McDoom gets moved to corner.  He's shown the hands of one & his name just screams defense to me.  Who wants to face McDoom Island?  (As it stands, throw it to Eddie & you're... McDoomed.)

If O'Korn gets dinged, we are really throwing BP into the fire, and I would think we would want to get some reps just to get some feel.

This seems to be a trend with Jim Harbaugh, leaving the starter in and not having them look over their shoulder.

At this point, I am surprised Jim isn't working Peters in just to make sure he has some confidence when he does need to go in for a play or two...

At what point over the last couple games would you have put a RS-freshman in the game & hope he can just take the snap without fumbling?  Peters would be a bundle of nerves, just hoping to not screw up.

"Garbage time" is best described as when the game is completely out of reach even if you hand them a couple of freak scores.  The closest we have seen of that this season was the last series at Purdue, and Peters was on the field just to get his feet wet.

When we're up on Penn State by 28 with 8 to play in the 4th, we'll see us some Peters.
