Michigan QB Recruiting under Harbaugh

Submitted by NashvilleBLUE on

Since Harbaugh has come in and started recruiting, I've seen 4 names really mentioned as being targets directly by Jim: Malzone (who committed to the previous regime), Gentry, Peters, and Mccaffrey. All 4 joined the program.

My question is this: is Jim finding who he thinks is the top QB recruit to fit his system, making his ranking different from the recruiting services, or are we missing on some other targets that maybe services have rated higher?

Just curious if guys like Peters and McCaffrey are Harbaugh's top targets for QB in their respective class or did we pursue others first that didn't show mutual interest, thus causing our pursuit of the guys we currently have?

He tried to flip Josh Rosen right after he was hired in 2015 to no avail. I wouldn't call Malzone a Harbaugh target at all, he wasn't in a position to be shaving spots after he took over a month before signing day. He took Gentry as an intriguing prospect physically for the position.

In 2016 it seems like KJ Costello was the top target and then we took Peters when Costello trended to Stanford.

McCaffrey did seem like he was the top 2017 target on the staff's board.

DTR looks like he's the top 2018 target.

I concur. Lawrence has some mad skill. I still don't understand how these top prospect QB kids aren't lining up to play for Jim. As a player and a parent, you'd have to see that this is a no brainer. Your son will play in the NFL more than likely and no staff will have you better prepared for that than Michigan. How many of these high four stars and five stars never amount to much in the pros? A ton of them. That's because they aren't being prepared for that stage and being coached up like that. Sons of bitches are given a gift and they throw it in the garbage.

Well, if Malzone committed to the previous regime, he wouldn't have been mentioned as being a target directly by Jim (?). Gentry, he poached from Texas with a late offer because Hoke and Borges didn't believe in recruiting quarterbacks and we had, like, 2 on scholarship or something.

I'm more curious as to what style of QB Harbaugh will go after going forward. While Peters/McCaffery have some mobility to extend plays, they are not dual-threat like what we'd see out of an OSU QB. I wonder if Harbaugh going after DTR means he's wanting to see more Colin Kaepernick-like QBs at Michigan down the road once he's got a full set of "his guys," or if he's just going after the best possible players regardless of his skillset.

I think this is an interesting question.  I wonder whether the physical skillset will be secondary to the individual's willingness to buy into the system and "compete".

Edit: I'm not sure what the downvote is about.  I'm not suggesting he isn't going to try to get the best quarterbacks - just that he would rather adjust the offense to the skillset for the one that he thinks would thrive within the system.

Harbaugh's stated philosophy is to get the best guys and figure out fit later. If the best guy likes to run a lot, he'll figure out how to make it work. He's not married to one system or style. I think this spread is a result of being able to recruit so many highly rated receivers. If the best guys he could recruit were running backs, offensive lineman and blocking TEs, doubt he'd be going to a spread. Why it's exciting to see what he'll do with these QB recruits. They'll be put in the best position to succeed. He's had success with completely different QBs that weren't initially his guys. Going to be exciting to see what he does with his guys after 5 years with them.

I think when Jim was first hired the assumption by many, and not the typical sunshine blower crowd, was any QB would be flocking to be taught by a guy with NFL chops who had Andrew Luck in college and created an alpha dog in SF.  Count me among those.

As others have noted Rosen, Costello, and Eason seem to have been his top targets in earlier classes.  Rosen was a hail mary with barely any relationship.  Costello was a CA guy who opted to stay in CA, go to a hell of a school, and play in the same system as Luck.  Eason seemed married to Mark Richt so it was a bit surprising he even stayed at Georgia once Richt was let go.  But we never seemed to be the leader there.  In a way you can give some bogeys here because some of these relationships are 18 to 24 months in the making and QBs seems to commit early in their respective classes.

It's a bit head scratching but QB is a one off position unlike say WR or OL or anything else - only one of them plays at a time. I do find it strange - again - a QB would be more focused on playing for Fisch than being coached up by JMFH but who knows what goes on in the minds of these kids.

Unlike the QB situation I was a bit more apprehensive about the sunshine blowing about "all of CA, especially northern CA is now ours as Jim is a legend in the Bay area" that was being spouted in 2015....and that has proven to be true.  Continued success by Stanford I suppose hurts and even with Jim Harbaugh getting kids to move 3 time zones over is not easy.

I don't think you'll ever see Harbaugh recruit a true running QB like Denard that he has to teach how to throw.  But I do think he'd love to have a QB like Gardner who can run and throw.  I also think he likes the idea of taking one every couple of classes to mix into the competition with pocket passers.  Since "throwing QB who can run" is such a rare thing, I doubt you see it much.

Let's take a moment to step back again and pour one out for Devin again.  Had he been born a couple years earlier he would have played for spread-guru RichRod.  Had he been born a couple years later he could have played for QB guru Harbaugh.  Instead he got sucked into the Hoke offensive awkwardness.

A great QB wins games and covers a lot of errors, holes, and gaps. Michigan needs a great QB.

I agree, it's been too long. The closest we've come in a while is Jake Rudock in the bowl game, that game he looked like..okay finally we have a Michigan QB unfortunately it was his last game for Michigan.

The answer is we have to wait until a QB recruited by Harbaugh has the chance to start for a couple years. Peters will be the first to have that chance. Given Harbaugh's experience and track record, for us to assume anything but great success is foolish. Any football coach shouldn't be judged until five years in. Then it is their players and an established system. Wanna doubt? Go elsewhere.

We were all over this kid the first part of last year, and with our footprint at IMG continuing to grow I think he will be our 18 QB, and maybe JMFH takes a flier on an athlete (ala BROWARD type Denard, Lamar etc).   I think the depth chart will tell us everything we need to know next year.  If Peters is the declared #2 that will show all of the youngsters playing qb early at MI is possible.  As of now, he seems to lean towards crafty veteran vs. young - which I'm sure has everything to do with decision making.

I really don't know what you mean, "making his rankings different from the recruting services."Hargaugh, like most coaches will differ in his opinion in some aspects of the gurus work. He is not a star gazer, sees the players and then proceeds to go after them Most are highly rated because evaluating h.s. talent is evolving greatly and Harbaugh is great judge of talent.

Harbaugh saw Peters first and jokingly called him his "next Andrew Luck.: He was his no. 1 qb priority and the same was true for Dylan McCaffrey he following year. Harbaugh was actually recruiting - somewhat 6 qbs but Dylan was at the top, followed by Mills, the young man going to Stanford and whom i believe is rated higher than McCaffrey, but that's according to the gur sites, not Harbabuh.

As a former qb himself, Harbaugh has a lot to conside on who he wants to bring in and tutor. There may be players that are demonstrably better than the qb he extends an offer to right now, but Harbaugh would not have made offer if he did no feel he could not turn him into best option for UM.

So in many instances, his persona ratings will differ from the service, but all services would love to have a Harbaugh rate their qbs but they do pretty good, given their limited experience. Harbaugh looks for certain things in the ideal qb and whenever he arrives, he'll be a runner to boot.

I'm sure Harbaugh will look at ratings to see if he should grab some new film on an individual. Rest assurred, however, the gurus might make the initial ranking and if you see Harbaugh offer a high 3 star over a 4 star, know the 3 is better for our program.
