Michigan out for Jarrett Patterson???

Submitted by MWolverine7 on
Anyone hearing this? Apparently it’s down to Notre Dame and UCLA according to other boards. If this is true, not good. I was hoping we’d get him in this class. Edit: Just realized that Notre Dame leapfrogged us with a new OL coach.

This is not Alex Leatherwood we're talking about. Would rather have him in the class than not, but he wasn't going to be in the lineup this year.

We took a huge OL haul last year and are still looking to add. Numbers aren’t low at all. What we don’t have are guys left over from the previous regime because Brady Hoke sucked at his job and getting fired makes it hard to recruit. And Newsome’s knee exploded.

Alex Leatherwood I would understand. This is worse. If Patterson isn’t jumping at the chance to start for Michigan next year, after many believed we were his leader after the OV, then we have a problem. If the grad transfer (40% chance) and NPF (20% chance) don’t work out?

we have talent - it is just very young at tackle

Interior (G/C)

Ruiz - So

Bredeson - Jr

Onwenu - Jr

Filiaga - RS Fr

Spanellis - RS So

Vastardis - walk on Jr

Rumler - 2019 recruit

Tacklle

Hudson - RS Fr

Stueber - RS Fr

Honigford - RS Fr

Mayfield - Fr

Hayes - Fr

JBB - RS Sr

Newsome - RS Jr

Uluzio - RS Jr

for 2018, the hope is 2 out of Filiaga/Stueber/Hudson/Newsome/JBB can join Bredeson (G or T), Onwenu and Ruiz

OT is the 2nd biggest 2018 worry after QB - the rest of the team should be fine

JBB and Ulizio were not good when they played.  JBB might not even be back.  While I am rooting really hard for Newsome to make a comback, the guy is coming off of a knee injury where he almost lost his leg and hasn't played football in 2 years.  Starting 2 OT's that have never played in a college game is not good.

we need 2 OL to add to Ruiz, Onwenu and Bredeson

it could go like this:

LT - Hudson

LG - Filiaha or Bredeson

C - Ruiz

RG - Onwenu

RT - Bredeson or Stueber

these seem most likely.

2 OL to replace Cole (a mid-round pick) and Kugler (not heading to the NFL).

But think about it - almost EVERYONE else of consequence is back

TE - Gentry, McKeon, Wheatley, Eubanks

WR - DPJ, Black, Perry, Crawford, Schoenle, McDoom

RB - Higdon, Evans, Walker, Samuels

QB - Peters, D-Caff, Patterson

FB - Mason

last year almost the whole offense was new - there should be a LOT more continuity - hell, look at the Patiots - took them half a season to incorporate a few new guys into the mix before they got rolling - it is difficult when almost the whole damn team is new

on defense

DE - Gary, Chase, Kemp and Paye are back plus Vilain and Hutchinson added to the mix

DT - lose Hurst, but Solomon, Dwumfour and Mone return and Jeter, Paea and DIB all get added

LB - lose McCray, but Bush and Hudson return along with 2017 guys Ross, Anthony, Singleton as well as Uche and Gil

CB - Long and Hill - plus Hughes to cover slot if Thomas isn't ready

S - Kinnel, Glasgow, Woods, Metellus - everyone back

even all the specialists return

decent/good QB play with this team and they should be in great shape for 2018 and 2019

If Bredeson is capable at handling one of the Tackle positions, I think that may create the easiest path to a competent O line. Also, there may be something there in Spanellis playing Center in the bowl game.

In this scenario you'd end up with an interior of Onwenu - Spanellis - Ruiz.

Bredeson would take over one of the tackle positions, probably RT?

Then, all you would be left with is trying to find one guy handle the other tackle spot. I personally like this as they are only having to fill one rather than both tackle spots.

Unfortunately, I think it's very possible that the O line in 2018 is once again a patchwork of sorts made up of mostly or all Guards.

has the size to play tackle

was recruited as a tackle

supposedly was neck and neck with Newsome his Freshman year to play LT (supposedly)

so him playing tackle isn't a monster stretch

bringing in 2 more contributors to the OL isn't unheard or in need of a miracle

but at least the rest of the team isn't a complete changeover this year for a change as well

Boom. If that doesn’t have you optimistic then I don’t want to be your friend. The majority of us thought 2018-2019 would be when the roster was primed for dominance and the elusive big10 title. Add Shae Patterson to that qb room and it only solidified my optimism. 2017 was the adversity this young team needed to propel them to the next level. It’s coming

UMFoster

Do we have a lot of players to be optimistic about?  Yes.  Do we have question marks at 2 very, very important positions (OT)?  Yes.  That is not a position that you can just hide.  Do we also have 2 incompetent OC's?  Yes.

There would be a lot more optimism if we made more changes to the offensive staff, but Pep and Drevno haven't given us any reason to be optimistic about them.

Maybe Patterson found out Drevno is leaving. I thought I read somewhere that Patterson would drop M if Drevno was out - possible silver lining?

Brandon Justice or whatever his name is tweeted a story about how Patterson called Drevno and told him he wouldnt be coming.

Sounds like Drevno is staying. Patterson just doesnt want to play under him

different than Mayfield?  other than just wanting more

people act like we lost a 5-star

this is someone we have never held the crystal ball lead for - it has always been battling UCLA for a California kid from behind

The more OLinemen the better, you can never have enough.  I think most of the fanbase is upset because the way in which his recruitment went.  We were apparently in his top 2 and he talked about how he loved Drevno (Crazy, I can't believe it either.)  Then we were eliminated because he was favoring a school with a brand new coaching staff and a school that he visited when they didn't even have his position coach.  He hasn't even met the guy who will be coaching him at ND.

This is also just another loss on the recruiting trail for Drevno.  The guy just flat out cannot recruit.

The Rice transfer is an absolute must get now. Also, if they kept Drevno to land Patterson maybe now they can part ways. Boy, if they lose Reese too Harbaugh will have to have one of the best coaching performances of his life in 2018 to right this recruiting ship.

Blue Warrior

January 30th, 2018 at 8:20 PM ^

We will never win the trench war on offense with Drevno around. He has been given enough time to find another job. Can’t recruit, can’t coach, offensive play calling skills of a 3rd grader, why in the fuck is he still around?

UMFoster

January 31st, 2018 at 8:26 AM ^

This is by far Harbaugh's biggest downfall.  You cannot keep a guy around who cannot do their job.  2 million dollar coaches still have jobs on the staff because Harbaugh won't fire them.  Neither one recruit, the playcalling and development were terrible this year, the offense was ranked 100+ nationally, and we threw less TD passes than teams that run the triple option.  They need to be held accountable.

Blue Warrior

January 31st, 2018 at 12:00 PM ^

Exactly....If Harbugh wants to bring his buddies in and emabrase the program then he can share a cab with Drevno on their way out of AA. Is the pride worth the fall? If this was Sabans staff he would clean house. If Harbugh doesnt improve in 18 then we know what the next 15 years will be like. 8-10 win seasons.

We hired an Elite head coach for a reason and pay a premium for it. In year 4 we expect results....end of story

You would think posters here would show an ounce of humility after all the dumbfuck basketball hot takes everyone endured for 3 years. But no, the historically young team lost to four 10+ win teams and dropped a bowl game so everything sucks. You’d think we lost to Cal and Wake Forest and blew a 2nd half lead in the bowl game and so could never possibly be good a year later and in perpetuity because that has never happened ever.

Stringer Bell

January 30th, 2018 at 9:11 PM ^

Not sure what history has to do with anything.  We got 1 win against an over .500 team last year.  We weren't very good, and now we're banking next season on an Ole Miss transfer being eligible.  It's disappointing to see such a terrible offensive coaching staff go completely unchanged.  If not for Brown, Zordich, Partridge, and Mattison we would be in serious fucking trouble.

PurpleStuff

January 30th, 2018 at 9:48 PM ^

We’re banking on returning 20 of 22 on the defensive 2-deep, three young linemen playing at a high level very early in their careers, possibly bringing back Newsome, adding another established qb to a stable of talented freshmen, 1,700 rushing yards and 21 TD at RB coming back, returning all but 15 receptions, a huge chunk of which came from freshmen, including our best wr who missed nearly the whole year, and adding an entire roster of blue-chip recruits we haven’t even seen yet. All led by a coach whose last team completely took off in year 4, despite things like blowing leads in bowl games in year three, or even losing to Wake Forest. But you’ve been great at predictions and judging Michigan coaches, so I’ll totally defer.
