Michigan Offers CB Brandon Phelps (Damascus HS, MD)

Submitted by HarryPotterDies on
He's gone virtually unnoticed by the gurus, but's obtained a plethora of offers from big programs including OSU, Penn State, LSU, and Nebraska. I hear he currently favors Maryland. He has experience at wide receiver and corner. I'm impressed with his ability to fight for balls. He has good separation speed, but sometimes struggles after getting challenged at the line. I see him more as a defensive player than a receiver. He might be a tad slow for corner. He has the frame for safety imo. I think he's a project player.

Michigan is probably at the point where they can start offering project players. This is the third year in a row they are going to be extremely young, and hopefully have a solid core of players for the next couple years--hopefully.

Dorsey might not make it to campus. Hollowell is (in my opinion) a middling recruit, and I'm not extremely excited about Greg Brown. This recruiting class is only going to be about 14-17 players, and 3 spots have already been taken. There's no need to offer projects - if we have a good season, we could fill the entire class with solid recruits.

Especially considering the Dorsey situation and some recent speculation that Turner may end up at safety, I would love to see one more CB recruit. Not sure about our chances but I know we have offers out there to guys like Doran Grant, Kyshoen Jarrett, and dallas crawford.

...Washington Post Recruting Insider:
A two-way starter since his freshman year...Maryland and Penn State are recruiting Phelps to play cornerback. His father, Gary, played football at Virginia. ... Phelps tore knee ligaments at the end of his sophomore season and, while [he] returned to play this past season, Wallich[his coach] has high expectations for the coming fall. "When you do tear your knee, even if you do play the next year, it takes two years to get the feeling back to 100 percent," Wallich said. "He's a really smart player. A lot of kids frustrate you as a coach because they don't get it but he understands coverages, he understands how to run routes and get separation. He has great hands. A lot of high school kids body the ball but he catches it way out in front. Lastly, the physical tools, he glides like it's effortless."

Yeah, I've heard of this kid, he's actually Michael Phelps' little brother. Good athletic genes, and no wonder he's considering Michigan.
