Michigan Offers Cali WR
Michigan has just offered Derrick Woods. He may only be a 3 star but check his offer sheet. He's a Big Timer.

Wants to leave the west...so we'll see.

That is a big kid that he literally levels. Exactly the type of physical back we need blocking down field for a strong running game. Quite frankly, I feel our receivers do a nice job at that already. They were well coached in that dept., which i guess is pretty typical in a spread offense. He seems like a really physical kid.

I don't think the stars mean anything at this point. That's obviously a 4 star (minimum) offer sheet. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at USC.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:25 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised at all either. USC has basically owned the LA inner-city schools.
February 10th, 2011 at 8:46 PM ^
the recruiting sites will give out the majority of their 4 stars in a couple months. A lot of players who have 3 stars now are actually 4 stars. It's just that the sites tend to be cautious at first.
February 10th, 2011 at 8:47 PM ^
At this point in the process, the offer sheet means more than a star rating and that's a very impressive one.

What about Stefon Diggs? I thought I saw he was the either #1 or #2 reciever in the nation and also was Countess's teammate.
February 10th, 2011 at 8:49 PM ^
we're on it
February 10th, 2011 at 9:13 PM ^
Thanks, I figured we would just hadn't heard if we did. I remember him also having some interest in Michigan as well. I am guessing next years class will have 2-3 recievers in it depending on how many scholarships we have to offer.
February 10th, 2011 at 8:49 PM ^
Rivals reports he's got an offer. He's interested in Michigam, but it's going to be a hard pull...
February 10th, 2011 at 8:51 PM ^
Who are his favorites at this point?
February 10th, 2011 at 8:56 PM ^
He's pretty open at the moment, but he likes Miami, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, and Ohio State.
I have gotten the impression, though, that Michigan was one of his favorites when the old coaching staff was in place. We'll see if Hoke can restore that place in his recruitment.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:28 PM ^
His rivals offer list does not list the offers that scout lists. Oregon, Florida, Cal, Miami (YTM) are missing from his rivals offer list.
February 10th, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
He's interested in Michigam
Where is this Michigam you speak of?
/s
I feel he will attend a local college power aswell. If he does leave California, it would be for Florida or Miami, imho. Take that fwiw.

hope we land Stefon Diggs. It's early but it seems that he really likes us.He wants to be a Charles Woodson type of player.GO BLUE!!!
February 11th, 2011 at 8:56 AM ^
tell speed amongst high school competition, but it looks like this dude has some serious wheels - not to mention, he can really bring the hammer....an aspect of his game that I'm sure had Hoke salivating watching this clip

This is interesting to me in light of the staff insisting Lucien play D if he came. I wonder if they weren't impressed by Lucien's tape.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:16 PM ^
It's obvious that the coaches didn't want any WR in the 2011 class, regardless of how good they are.
They didn't actually want Lucien to come here and play CB, but that is the tactic used to tell him he wasn't wanted in the class.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:22 PM ^
I understand the tactic, I just question why insisting on not taking a 4 star WR in the 2011 class. It seems to me that there must have been a reason for "turning away" Lucien since the staff recognizes it will be a need for this class.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
I can't remember the exact number, but we have something like 17 scholarship receivers on the roster currently. The coaches obviously want to decrease that number down to something closer to 10-12, so they're probably going to take 1-2 fewer WR in each class than the amount that graduate for a couple years.
We had two WR's redshirt, so Lucien would have made three for the class of 2011. It's not like 4* guys are so rare for Michigan that we'll never get another one..........
February 10th, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^
Actually, three wideouts redshirted (depending on where Ricardo Miller lines up, that's him, Williamson and Robinson) so in effect you've got three 2011 receivers, plus Baquer Sayed (unsure how good he is but he got good MAC offers) on the roster.
At this point, 16% of the available scholarships are being used on wideouts, where WRs take up about 8% of available starting spots on the team.
Back in the Lloyd Carr era there were never more than 7-8 scholarship wideouts on the roster at any one time. Right now I think it's 13. No wideouts were needed this year. 1-2 are needed next year, along with the necessary 5 OLs, 6 DTs, 2 TEs, 1 QB, 2 RBs, 1 LB, and 3 DBs.
February 10th, 2011 at 11:10 PM ^
I actually like the idea of only having 8 or so on scholarship, because it allows us to target one elite WR in each class.
I'm not so sure that Baquer Sayed will ever be offered a scholarship though with the defensive restocking we'll be doing over the next couple years.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
but can he throw? (Afterall he does everything else.)
February 10th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
Yeah, I think he'll be a 4-star on all three sites.
February 10th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
Is going to be short of scholarships going forward, aren't they? Or am I still confused on their situation?
February 10th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
Rivals lists him as 6'1" while Scout at 5'11"... he seems like an all around athlete I wonder why he's not listed as one
February 10th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
RIvals has him at 6'1, Scout at 5'11, someone is trying to steal 2 inches off this dude's height.
February 10th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
I really wish this whole star system goes away at some point. Obviously, it doesn't really matter what the kid gets. Seems like the kid has decent straight line speed.
February 10th, 2011 at 11:18 PM ^
I hate to say this, but watching his film, I liked him on defense better than offense. Not saying I wouldn't let him play offense, but if we're trying to limit our WR's the next couple years, it'd be nice to go after the ones that could make a switch if we don't need them on offense.
February 11th, 2011 at 12:04 AM ^
It is nice to go after talent and I am guessing that Hoke feels he has some pull in the area after his SDSU adventure.
Overall I think we should really concentrate on our areas of need since we are relatively well stacked on WRs
This is a good offer though considering there is always room for elite talent.
February 11th, 2011 at 12:28 AM ^
We lose Hemmingway, Odoms, Stonum, and Grady. Taking 1-2 in the 2012 class will still decrease the overall number on the roster.
It also wouldn't shock me if at least one of the younger slots decides to transfer. We're going to need some WR's in the class, just not the 4-5 we've been taking each year recently.
February 11th, 2011 at 12:32 AM ^
Our top 5 WR's graduate in the next 2 years.
The underclassmen have a combined 9 catches to their name.
We're stacked for the coming year. After that, not so much...
February 11th, 2011 at 12:52 AM ^
Cuts on a dime, above average speed, soft hands and tackles really well. I could see him at a number of positions. As many have said, I could certainly see him gaining a 4th star but regardless, the apparent immeasurables: plays with a mean streak and bad intentions, runs north and south after 1st cut, and fights for the YAC, speak volumes of this kids potential with great coaching and development at the next level. Would love to see him in a winged helmet.
February 11th, 2011 at 9:07 AM ^
w/ his speed, quickness, & "tremendous toughness" I think he would make a great safety. By the time he gets finishes his red shirt year he should be around 200-205lbs, if not more.
February 11th, 2011 at 8:27 AM ^
wow. would be nice to pick this kid up. has good size and speed in this video.
