Michigan now on Top in Avg. Recruit Ranking

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So, with Roseboro committing, Michigan now has the highest average recruit ranking at Scout, 3.91 to 3.90. At Rivals, Michigan comes in at number three, behind only Alabama and USC (they are at 3.95, 3.88, and 3.7 respectively.) For Michigan's player rankings, this is including a kicker. If you pull the kicker out (for averaging purposes,) Michigan's rankings at Scout jump to 4.0, and at Rivals up to 3.9. No matter how you quibble, Michigan is near the top of the heap.

All the concern about stars can get a bit ridiculous, especially when you consider guys like the Glasgow brothers who fly beneath the radar and are a huge asset, despite being walk ons. Still, our recruiting is getting better, not worse. As Ace mentioned on the front page, the number of spots left is getting smaller and smaller. Hopefully, this encourages guys among Keisean Lucier-South, Iman Marshall, Asmar Bilal, Tyrone Wheatley and Marcus Lewis to pull the trigger and join Team 136. And complaints and talk about the 3-star mafia are a thing of the past, thank goodness.

This is the key point above all.

If we have a season that gets rid of the speculation that Hoke is on the hot seat  . . . then it's lights out.

Well, actually the lights are already out.  I guess it will be more of them out.  Something like that.

This cannot be true. We lost Harris and Campbell. The wheels are coming off. Hoke can't close on skill position players. Borges ate donuts. Michigan is a younger sibling. Urban Meyer wears a headset. Margarine isn't as good as butter. People are sometimes mean to the head coach when his team loses. When is the room going to stop spinning?

Only thing left to do now is win.

  • 2012 class was 3.56 average (Rivals) with 25 recruits.  9th if you go by average rank.
  • 2013 class was 3.63 average with 27 recruits.  7th if go by average rank
  • 2014 class was 3.44 average with 16 recruits. 15th if you go by average rank
  • Current class (3.73 so far) is going to be top 5 by average when all is said and done with a small size and 5 or so more openings to go.

So 3 of the last 4 classes are top 10ish.  The other was still a healthy 15th.  Need to translate these into wins and making pancakes of most of our Big 10 competition.

I have to say this staff can recruit and has shown it since they got here!  Now it's time to show if they can coach.  There are no excuses with the level of talent they have brought in!

My prediction for this year is positive.  I truely believe they will only lose two games at most.  If that happens, my guess is that Hoke gets an extension.  Let's Go!

Disclaimer:  I have to admit that I have been very skeptical of the Hoke hire and the job he has done, but something tells me this team will surprise.  Not sure if I am feeling optimism because tomorrow is a new slate!

I know we are assuming 'normal attrition', but when I look at the depth chart by class, I don't see a single player that we wouldn't want to come back or stay with the program. We won't speculate on that with names, but I think it's premature at best to assume any more than the one remaining scholarship is available.

I can think of at least 3 but since it is policy not to name names I won't say the specific names.  Just think about who is in their 2nd or 3rd year and not really realistic to get playing time on the 2 deep and get the bulk of their time against the Miami (OH) types.  (Think Thomas Rawls playing time)  The 2012s have a few candidates - not saying they will leave but if their goal is playing time, unless something changes dramatically in the next 3 months ...

There are three redshirt seniors (Gardner, Ryan, Hagerup) and six seniors (Beyer, Clark, Morgan, Hollowell, Taylor, Wile) that are in their last season. There are three open scholarships going into 2015.  That's a total of twelve open scholarships for 2015.

There are currently eleven verbal commitments.

Unless there is some attrition from players with eligibility left, there is only one more scholarship left for the 2015 class.

Also need to consider that if Ryan Glasgow becomes/remains a starter and/or Kenny Allen becomes the first-string punter in 2015, they may be awarded scholarships.

It is looking like John Runyan is going to be the Sleeper Recruit of the 2015 Class by default. He is the only non-kicker who has three stars.   Who is going to push him?  I'm disappointed that Hoke is not recruiting more 3 stars so we can have competition at every position.

It seems like the recruiting services get less and less reliable over time. When I was a kid, the only source for recruiting came from a few national yearly magazines. Lindy's and Athlon's are two that come to mind. Back then it was like whoever those guys had ranked as a four star or a five star, those players ALWAYS panned out and were as good as those guys predicted. Now, it seems like any recruit we get that is ranked with a fourth or fifth star is as good as advertised about half the time maybe. I'm not going to name recruits that have failed to live up to the hype , but you guys all know numerous examples in the last decade. Given how unreliable these services have become, I find it completely ridiculous that someone is making a prediction about how good our players are based on their numerical rating from rivals. If you have paid attention to their predictions and then followed up on outcomes like I have, you would dismiss this post immediately. Just my opinion. Hoke is a great recruiter obviously.

The coaches know who they want and need. Roseboro is a great example . . . they were on to him before he was ranked as highly as he is now. They are doing a great job of assessing talent and moving forward.

It's a great accomplishment and testament to the strength of UM's "brand" and this coaching staff's recruiting prowess.  Now they just have to start winning more games.

I'm glad the recruiting side of the house is top notch. Now I think with Nussmeier coaching QBs and calling a consistent offensive scheme, the wins will come.
