I have no clue what the state of officiating is in the Big Ten today other than bad. Yesterday, two major calls were simply made up against Michigan in the first and second half. Both fouls called were not committed and the evidence is clear in the above highlights.

One was a hands-to-the-face call against Rashan Gary in the first half on a pass play that gave Northwestern new life on one of their scoring drives. The other was the infamous holding call on Higdon who was tackled on a fake carried into the line on a zone read 21-yard run by Patterson.

There was no hold. And Michigan made a point of this by checking with the referee after the penalty was called to confirm the identity of the player who allegedly committed the foull, which the crew then apparently acknowledged as Higdon as the actual culprit.

This play should have primarily officiated by the center official or umpire who had direct looks at the play, not the side judge who apparently threw the flag from his sideline position.

The Gary call was just as awful as the phantom one on Higdon. There is no foul by Gary on the play as he makes a swim move to get to the quarterback and his move forces the tackle to lose his balance and fall. If anything, the blocker loses leverage and starts to fall on his own and is actually falling when Gary gets around him. There is no indication of any helmet or shoulder pad movement of the Northwestern player on the play that would suggest the foul called. And clearly no illegal advantage is visibly gained by Gary in his action.

I am not certain who threw the flag on that play. It had to be either the center official or the referee because the action occurred upfield behind the pocket.

In this game, Northwestern was called for two penalties all game. However, if you watch it's Oline play, they are collectively guilty of holds and tackles in a variety of situations, including one evidenced in the highlights on one of Thorson's final passes. Winovich is held and then nearly tackled on a pass completion that nearly reached midfield with seconds left. The center official was looking right at the play and made no call.

Northwestern is one of the least penalized teams in the nation. Has been for two years. The team is averaging 3 penalties a game while Michigan has been called for more than 30 penalties in its last three games. It is 118th among the 130 ranked in penalties committed. It is being called for 104 yards in penalties over its last three games, two of which were at home.

But in Evanston, the two calls mentioned above, impacted scoring chances for both teams and thus changed the complexion of the contest. The advantage in penalty yards was plus 75 for Northwestern. That's the equivalent of two personal fouls and two holding calls.

Even a call PI call on David Long in the endzone was iffy. And that call gave the Wildcats first down on the Michigan 2 and they scored from there.

Terrific post. The godawfully abysmal officiating in the Big Ten is detrimentally affecting my ability to enjoy the game as I've done for 4 decades. Something has to be done for the sake of the integrity of the game itself. The NCAA is swimming in piles of cash, so they should be able to come up with a reasonable solution.

Ok upon my further review, this didn’t look as bad as it did yesterday.

1. I thought Patterson played really well, using his feet more as part of his arsenal. I can really see this becoming a staple in our offense going forward.

2. The OL also played well, giving Patterson lots of time and giving the holes Higdon needed.

Am I crazy?

Watching this, I had to smile. After playing so poorly in all facets of the game in the first half, they gutted out a win against a very motivated Northwestern team.

That said, Michigan is going to have to figure out why it starts so slowly. Other opponents won’t be as forgiving.

We are getting MUCH better at the read option.  It's moved beyond what felt like something practiced for only a few reps last year into something we're actually decent at.  I think this could provide a major wrinkle if teams are worried enough about a QB keep that they can't just crash the fullback.   Awesome development there.

Thank you for providing these highlights.

Much of these plays I didn't see, was instead listening to the radio face down on the carpet to try and prevent psychic pain.  Tried to do pushups occaisonally to address my weak triceps. When that failed I resorted to random screaming during  the moments when I couldn't pretend not to care.  Then I went right back to doing other chores around the house as distraction.

The officiating is incredibly suspect and one sided.  I give the team so much credit for playing past it.  We're the biggest cash cow that Delany has and his administration treats us the worst.

Thanks for this. A few observations:

- Patterson had options to dump off, third down play where is chucks it to outstretched hands of DPJ he had Higdon streaking in the middle he saw that and didn't pass. What?? Me thinks Harbaugh tells him to follow the script and stop hero balling. What it seems to me is that we really need a QB who goes through season with receivers and grows. Patterson is following the Rudock school of growth. If he stays he'll be unstoppable next year. But yea he prolly gone ...I really hope Mcaffery onwards we grow our own QBs who make this offense less jagged and fully weaponized.

- Hate to be that guy but still "young" receivers: Nico has talent but still isn't crisp in routes and isn't fully aware of markers etc. Growing time. Terribly missing Tarik Black. Come back strong big fella.Curious why aren't we running DPJ from slot didn't bomb NW secondary. Nagging injury bothering his speed?

- Depth depth depth. Lets keep building it. We are getting there..you can tell wearing out Northwestern. With good depth we can go toe to toe with OSUs of the world.

- Officiating. What? F delaney. I hate B1G. Again, we should leave this god awful terrible off field inhumae schools in PSU, MSU, OSU infested league. Disgrace.

- D line depth. Ridic. Unleash rush package all the time please.
