Michigan-ND rivalry renewal prospects "trending up" !
This is blowing up on twitter. Brian Kelly mentioned it on Rich Eisen's show.
The good Brian's take on this-
if Jim Hackett gets the ND series back on it's time to start talking statue

When you don't have a raging douche nozzle for an AD, all things are possible.
September 9th, 2015 at 2:41 PM ^
We can do all things through Hackett who strengthens us.

make sure the first game is in Ann Arbor. They owe us the next one.
September 9th, 2015 at 5:22 PM ^
Yes, they cut us out so they got one more home game. We should get the same this time.
September 9th, 2015 at 3:50 PM ^
and ND would be interested in a trade? Can I show you something from the Rutgers isle? Maybe a nice little team from our Penn State collection?
I miss Notre Dame. They were always my #2 rival behind OSU. Everyone needs to stop being stupid about it just get ND into the Big 10. Where they belong.
/Catholic. Not a good one.
EDIT:
Also, do we really have to play Maryland and especially fucking Rutgers every goddamn year? Boring ass B1G schedule. We need to start mixing it up.
September 9th, 2015 at 3:55 PM ^
That has always been on them, though. ND has refused to join the BigTen at different opportunities and despite playing MICHIGAN, State and Purdue every year.
Screw them. Let them go play in the ACC and have special loopholes for the CFB playoffs because they're too scared to play in a real football conference.
September 9th, 2015 at 4:11 PM ^
Truth is ND tried to join our conference on three different occasions. The fact that UM was the deciding factor in a couple of these is one of the reasons the teams leave it on the field when they do play. It has actually worked out beter for both schools, imo.
We have a long history of playin ND, taking a hiatus then resuming the series. I think we'll be seeing them soon, but it will be an a major bowl game w/in the next 4 to 5 years.
If, however, due to the way they extricated themselves from our last verbal agreement, i would definitely demand concessions on their part because we do not need to play them as much as they will need to play us once we are back on track. The power that lies w/in the BIG now and is only going to get better, allows us to dictate terms. Instead of being an early season game, or even an opener, I would like to see the game played on about Week 7 or Week 8 in the future when there is a very real chance both teams will be undefeated, rated highly and the winner will be catapulted even higher in the standinds, possibly ensuring their spot in the final four if they win out the remainder of their respective schedule. This can be a very good thing.
September 9th, 2015 at 5:31 PM ^
yeah, but that was like 100 years ago. The B1G has attempted to land Notre Dame and been rebuffed numerous times in the past 20 years.
September 9th, 2015 at 7:24 PM ^
Exactly.
I'm not talking about the entire history between MICHIGAN and Notre Dame after teaching them to play football in that northern Indiana field that day on the way to Chicago ...
I am talking about the more recent two decades or so during which ND has spurned the BigTen on a number of occassions and as recently when ...like Brandon did in elevating State over ND in his 'rivalry' rankings, ND said playing USC, Stanford and Navy all trumped the "rivalry" with MICHIGAN.
And now that they're twisting in the quasi-Independent wind, they're grasping for MICHIGAN once again.
I am not all that young, nor too old I suppose but my first game as student was Desmond stretching out on the play action from Grbac right in front of us and I have been back to be lifetime 5-1 against the irish in person.
Screw them. Should have joined the BigTen before we settled for Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland's TV footprint and fan base.
I fucking hate notre dame and being in attendance for both Home Night Games was awesome!!! Those cocky shits chanting "It Sucks to be a Michigan Wolverine!" in our stadium just minutes before Roundtree's TD smacked them in the face.
Loved walking out that night!!
(Not so much the drive home after ..that was brutal)

I disagree that ND needs Michigan on the schedule. ND has its rivalry with USC, a game that garners plenty of national attention. Further, If ND wanted a presence in Michigan it could easily schedule Michigan State, with which it has a longer history (77 games played vs. 42 in the case of Michigan). Say what you want about MSU, but right now the two are very much peers on the football field.
Similarly, Michigan does not need ND. I would argue that one reason why Michigan-ND garners national attention is because of Michigan's fanbase. If for example you put USC or Florida State on the schedule (instead of ND), that game is going to draw big ratings with the added benefit of additional interest in southern California and Texas.
If Harbaugh feels playing ND will boost recruiting efforts, then I'm behind him 100%. Still, I think recruiting is a major impetus behind ND's decisions to join the ACC, deemphasize its relationship with the B1G, and deem its "rivalries" with Navy and Stanford more important than its rivalry with Michigan. I also think Harbaugh is in line with this thinking based on his approaches to satelite camps and his recruting classes, which have had a much less midwestern composition than Hoke's classes.
September 11th, 2015 at 6:05 PM ^
I'll say it again but I'll type it a little slower for you. Navy isn't a rival in the vein of USC, a debt is owed and repayed yearly. I'd rather not play Navy at all. ND plays USC as their main rival and in alternate years plays Stanford therefore being on the West Coast every year. If you want to know why Stanford is more important? Thats why. Now if you moved the "Champions of the West" actually out west, well now we'd be cooking.
September 11th, 2015 at 6:42 PM ^
Thanks for typing it slower.
As I mentioned in my prior posts, which may be over your head, Michigan needs to take the ND approach and use the non-con to play teams in California, Texas, or the South.
September 9th, 2015 at 11:58 PM ^
I think you are mistaken. ND doesn't need Michigan, at all.
September 10th, 2015 at 12:08 AM ^
September 10th, 2015 at 10:40 AM ^
Noter Dame absolutely needs MICHIGAN.
You wouldn't know how to play football if it weren't for MICHIGAN.
You wouldn't have a stadium design if it weren't for MICHIGAN.
You wouldn't have stadium remodel ideas if it weren't for MICHIGAN and Bill Martin.
You wouldn't have a regional rival without MICHIGAN (aside from Purdue)
Go play Tulsa, Navy, Purdue, Boston College and a gaggle of ACC teams and call it "tradition"
It's how NBC would do it
September 10th, 2015 at 2:15 PM ^
I think you are confused with "needed" and "needs". Personally I love the game, most of my friends and family are UM fans so its great. Regional rival, sorry to burst your bubble but our only rival is USC. And frankly Navy did more for ND than Michigan has and that is a debt that ND continues to pay forward.
So as to scheduling. That is pretty funny. AppSt... Nothing more needs to be said here.
We don't need you,
September 10th, 2015 at 2:22 PM ^
You just made my point. Through all the times ND could have joined the BigTen (or a Conference, period) they didn't and cited all their "rivalries" like Navy, USC and Stanford.
And nobody on Earth regards App State a "rival" of Michigan's nor would our AD or fanbase ever make that claim. For ND, every opponent is a "traditional rival" according to ND.
You should reach out to Brian Kelly and ask why he brought it up and is campaigning Michigan to play the Irish again. It's not like Harbaugh said it.
Fight On!
September 10th, 2015 at 3:45 PM ^
No where did I say that AppSt was a rival. You listed teams that ND plays, I simply listed AppSt. I could mention UNLV or Michigan Directional schools but I won't. USC is NDs rival, period. ND owes Navy a debt period. No one else matters. I know that is tough for you to swallow but its the truth. What is the point about joining a conference? Is it somehow harder than a schedule that ND plays? And just for the record, ND is one of only 3 schools to never have scheduled a Div1-AA team.
Not sure how old you are, or how up to date on the Michigan/ND history you are. ND tried to join multiple times and multiple times it was Michigan that shut it down. But then something happened. ND realized it didn't need Michigan or the Big10. It didn't need another midwest game. Instead ND schedules teams that it feels can gain them exposure and expand the footprint.
September 9th, 2015 at 4:17 PM ^
I guess I'm just still pissed about the conference expanding to include two more irrelevant teams. Many years when we played ND both teams were highly ranked and it was a battle of titans that the whole country watched. I cared about beating ND and OSU. Beat those two and the rest of the schedule would take care of itself.
I'm getting overly nostalgic lately.
September 9th, 2015 at 4:58 PM ^
Maryland is a good football team and their basketball team is favored to win it all this year...good addition...plus they bring in a great area of the country to the B1G: Maryland and DC

September 9th, 2015 at 7:40 PM ^
I'd rather play ND in football, but have Penn State or Rutgers in the B1G. Even though Northwestern dabbles in that category, the B1G is a conference for large, well-rounded, research monsters that lead to very balanced university environements, not parochial liberal arts schools with outsized athletic departments.
September 10th, 2015 at 10:30 AM ^
Penn State.
September 9th, 2015 at 3:11 PM ^
It should be every OTHER year. Not every year.
This gives every 4-year player the opportunity to play against ND at home and on the road. That's all you need.
It also allows each team to mix up the non-conference schedule in the "off" years.
Play it every other year.
Futhermore,
- Make the MSU the first B1G game of EVERY season
- Keep OSU as the last B1G game of EVERY season
- Figure out how to get back to splitting those two rivals home and away each year
Hail Hackett!
September 9th, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
You know, I like that idea (about ND).
I don't like the idea of playing MSU first in the conference schedule, though. I don't know why, but that is just how I feel.
September 9th, 2015 at 4:00 PM ^
care when it is played during the season, but just as OSU should always be a noon kick, State should always be a 3:30 kick. Many a memorable Michigan v. Michigan State game has been played with darkness setting it. I don't like the noon kicks for M v. MSU.

trade MSU for ND any day of the week. ND is much more a rival, in most sports, academics and research. They have Rudy, we have Harbaugh. MSU has nothing to offer.
September 10th, 2015 at 12:52 AM ^
Donnie is our "Rudy."
September 9th, 2015 at 3:00 PM ^
but something about the phrase "douche nozzle" that just makes me cringe.

This has to go down as one of the most contrived moments in sports history. They created the origanal NBA super-team and then celebrated like they were the '04 'Stones taking out the Lakers.
September 9th, 2015 at 3:23 PM ^
That shit was painful to watch.
September 9th, 2015 at 4:03 PM ^
so many people both from Minnesota and Boston say that he was an insufferable prick. Like, really bad. I know, "sources" and such but I have heard uniformly that Garnett is not good at being nice to anybody.
September 9th, 2015 at 4:04 PM ^
the '04 Lakers the NBA's original Super Team?
September 9th, 2015 at 6:53 PM ^
No. It was the Detroit Pistons that year.
September 9th, 2015 at 6:05 PM ^
from Boston fans that the whole "Anything is possbile!!!" thing Garnett yelled was supposed to be the kickoff to some big marketing campaign from his sponsor, but he totally biffed the line.

It needs to come back. My formative years as a Michigan fan were in the late '80s/early '90s, when I hated ND more than any other team. And no matter the teams' fortunes, it's almost always a good game.

Well if it does come back I bet our current AD will do plenty to make sure that there are equal amount of home games and that it won't be easy for either team to get out of the deal.
A statue? how about a building built in his name?
