Michigan lands 2012 walk-on WR Bo Dever
Before clicking, you might want to turn down the speaker volume. BOOHMZ action.
i muted the volume on youtube and put on Pathetic by Lamb of God, so he now has the most awesome highlight film music ever
I saw lamb of god open up for metallica once, and I'm pretty sure it physically damaged me. Never again.
did you get into a mosh pit?
Three very good reasons to like this kid:
1. His Dad named him after Bo
2. Although he lives in Lake Forest he did not attend Loyola Academy (Gordon Tech-GO RAMS!)
3. That hit he put on some poor kid 54 seconds into his highlight reel-NICE!
You will love Ann Arbor Bo!
Than again, the score could have been 50-0 and it would still be epic, it just comes with playing football in the stuff and getting the ol' front yard hose-down afterwards.
Eh, it's been almost two weeks -- Hoke just wanted to give us something to hold us over. Welcome Bo!
I'll always welcome another Bo.
Hello: Bo Dever!
is Bo Dever? Like what is his game?
He's 6'2 195 lbs. Great hands, your prototypical possession receiver. He has meh speed but he's smart and knows how to get open, finds space b/w defenders and is a pretty good downfield blocker. Not really considered a D1 prospect but hey, his film looks nice...and his name is Bo.
So he is a slower Jason Avant. Can't hurt to get a guy with his size and intelligence to provide depth and challenge for some playing time.
the kids seems to really enjoy downfield blocking. Big help on the run game with that. Strange to see a WR contribute on the other side of special teams like that.
is Bo Dever? Like what is his game?
Sounds like a good talent at a position of need.. I like it! Welcome, Bo!
Is this for the fall, or 2012?
This situation seems perfect. kid even said that if he is offered a full ride somewhere he thinks he would stick with MIchigan cause its his dream. Now we just see if he becomes a viable option in the receiving game. Best of luck to him when he arrives
The video says he's class of '12. So, I would have to think it's for next Fall. He'll be a HS Senior this Fall.
nope.
Preferred walk-ons don't have to try out for the team.
Preferred walkons get the same benefits as a normal scholarship player except for free tuiton. AKA a spot on the team, room and board, ross academic center.
room and board? i don't think that's right.
I met some football players when I lived in West Quad and one of them was a preferred walk on so he explained what he got as a preferred walk on. Its also mentioned in this article below.
http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2009/03/09/sports/doc49b4db9edd…
that article does not say that walk-ons have their room and board (dorm and food) paid for. it says that they get the benefits of a scholoarship player without the tuition. the more likely interpretation is that the author is mistakenly lumping in room and board with tuition.
see this article: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/college/s_715456… which explicitly says that walk-ons do not get room and board.
The NCAA rulebook is pretty complex...but they even ask that walk-ons pay for their training table...not sure how that applies to other boarding costs.
http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/D111.pdf
This is from a section re: Housing and Meals...
A student-athlete who does not receive institutional athletically related financial aid covering the
full cost of board, including a walk-on or partial scholarship recipient, may purchase one training table meal
per day at the same rate that the institution deducts from the board allowance of student-athletes who receive
athletically related financial aid covering board costs pursuant to Bylaw 15.2.2.1.6
i asked the bylaw blog guy. wonder if he'll get back to me.
I could very easily be wrong.... but that was my understanding.
nuts and bagels at any time. It gets pretty silly. There is a reason whole law firms can make a go of it just dealing with the NCAA.
He directed me to a nice little place that actually paid me to eat there as long as I would sign a couple autographs during my meal.

It is my understanding that the NCAA does not differentiate between the preferred walk-on and the regular walk-on. The preferred status is a term developed by the schools. It means whatever the agreed arraignment between the school and athlete, such as a scholarship over time or a guaranteed roster position. Apparently, a free tutor and use of the facilities may be part of this arraignment.
The non-scholarship player has the right to merit scholarships and scholarships offered by approved foundations. Local scholarships may also be acceptable if it is merit based. Loans may also be provided so long as the athlete meets the criteria established for the general student population. So the preferred walk-on may receive tuition benefits, but it will not be athletically related.
Scholarships cannot be split for Division 1 football programs. However, for all other sports and divisions, the scholarships may be split. So a "preferred walk-on" for a Division 2 program may receive tuition and other benefits because of merit and partial athletic scholarships. This scholarship split may also be a source of the confusion.
Didn't you see Rudy? That dude got a free custodial closet to sleep in as a walk on.
They get into games for free.

It's good to see we're getting some talented preferred walk-ons like Dever and Kerridge. Plus there are a couple young OL on the roster that may contribute in a couple years.
But, we will be losing a lot of contributing walk-ons after this year, IIRC, the following guys are 5th year seniors and all are crucial special teams players (There will be a lot of spots to replace the special teams' units next year):
McColgan - Starting FB
Heinenger - DT/DE contributor
Pimarico - Starting LS
Tony Anderson - CB
Van Slyke - FS
Zach Johnson - S
Floyd Simmons is a RJr. that will hopefully stay for a 5th year.
but I think Van Slyke has two years of eligibility left.
Welcome Bo!
I really like that his tape isn't just of him making catches. My favorite play is when he comes back to the play and drills a guy for his running back. Love the grit. Welcome.
Seems like a hard working, 100% effort guy at a position of need for the future.
Welcome Bo!
Welcome to the fold, and good luck.
his grit and hustle make up for his stubby arms and legs I'm cool with it...
He went to the same High School as Matt Vogrich I believe, let's hope he can develop in to a Blair White or Dane Sanzenbacher
Why? Because he's white?
No because those are the only two guys who I can think of who really made an impact in the big ten who were either walk-ons or not highly recruited at all.
Yeah hopefully he can be a Wes Welker type wide receiver, or conversely if he moves to HB I think he will be a Toby Geirhart type runner,
<br>-Chet
To remember 1997, eh?
Looks a little slow but tuff! No, run after catch. I do see him playing speacial teams.
