Michigan Injuries and Mike Barwis

Submitted by Moleskyn on

As I was watching the game on Saturday, I couldn't help but notice how it seemed a lot of our guys got dinged up (the ones I remember are Carvin, Jonas, and D-Rob, but it felt like more), and not a lot of their guys did (there was one toward the end of the game that I remember).

I'm not bashing Barwis at all with this, he's obviously done a terrific job of getting our guys in elite shape, but I remember him saying that a big part of his program is about injury prevention. Can these injuries be pegged on him? Or are they more attributable to the fact that injuries just happen as a result of bad luck/some guys being more prone to injury? Maybe someone with more time on their hands could put together a diary comparing injuries at various programs over the past few years to see if the Barwis Effect is helping us.

about how Barwis' training methods stack up for injuries. Lots of people are convinced he is good at making kids better players, but how you extrapolate injuries. . .

Gee was not JR one of the non-wing folks early on...perhaps if he had worked out more, then his hammy would be better. But I guess it is easier to say its is Barwis' fault.

Who blamed it on Barwis? What are you talking about? All I said was that I've had it with people blindly singing Barwis' praises even though they know absolutely nothing about training. I never once said any of the injuries were his fault. I'm simply stating to the OP that IF these non-contact injuries started to develop routinely throughout the team, then start asking questions. And as far as I know, JRs hamstring injury was purely a fluke (yes, these happen). As a matter of fact, I've listened and read through many of the things he has said and they are all legit in a general sense. I don't know the specifics of the exercise selection/periodization/micro-meso cycle focuses/etc, so I can't really make any judgement on this. Then again, it highly depends on the athlete as well. Pardon me for not blindly trusting and making my own judgements about a subject I understand.

Football is a collision sport.  There are injuries in every game, some minor, some major.  Barwis is as good as it gets in strength and conditioning so I think it's absurd to think that these injuries are because of him.  That's assinine.  The injuries are IME because it was the first full contact action Michigan has seen since late November 2009.  The first game always see's players go down with bumps and bruises.  Cavins injury is unfortunate but he'll rehab and be back in a few weeks.  Never blame Barwis when you see our 300lb linemen with no guts whatsoever. Well MB makes these guys faster as well as bigger. You have to figure that someone will get hurt in football, it is a contact sport. I think the real advantage is with the recovery. The condition you are in before will determine how quickly you can return. Smith coming back in 10 months is outstanding.
