Michigan Hockey Pregame - Cincinnati
If anyone is visiting Cincinnati for Hockey Friday, I run the alumni club / spirit group here.
It's last minute, but anyone who wants to find fellow wolverines pregame should head to:
Moerlein Lager House
115 Joe Nuxhall Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202
Can't guarantee a good crowd, there's been no coordination with the big alumni association, but I thought it's worth a shot.
Will you guys be there Saturday before the regional championship?
Any ideas on getting tickets to the Saturday game?
No real plan Saturday, but I'd probably say just the same place to make it easy. I don't like to jinx this stuff, but it also means I'm setting up events on no notice if we do win :)
I was going to aim for 4pm ish.
I guess I should have checked the schedule, I didn't realize the first game was at 2pm (really hoping for a tv crowd on that one!)
You're all on your own afterwards! :) #FridayNightParty
Yes, as far as I'm aware... not my thing, so it's been a long time personally.
Never heard of Smoq until now. I'll have to check it out.
I've never heard of Smoq either. Eli's is a bit out of the way (its a hole in the wall place, but is always mobbed), but is very good. Montgomery Inn is a 10 minute walk or so from the arena. I think it gets overshadowed by the new restaurant boom in Cincy, a lot of good places have opened in recent years. Montgomery Inn hasn't changed much in 20 years, there's just some new memorabilia on the walls. It could use an update in my eyes. The good news is that the ribs haven't changed either - they're still very good. Worth the trip.
Someone mentioned Taft's in Over the Rhine, its a good place to grab a beer if you have extra time. It used to be a church that was built in the 1800s - the building was literally falling over. $9 million later, the place is beautiful and they have great beer.
Closest good bar to the arena downtown... just this small baseball stadium in between :)
Holy Grail Banks (also closeby) is probably your best bet to watch random college hockey. They've got enough tv's they probably would be ok changing one for your especially since baseball hasn't started yet.

They usually serve beer at events there, so unless it's an NCAA dictate (I've had plenty of beer at the Rose Bowl!), I imagine they will be serving at the game. I think this is an on campus vs. off campus thing and school dependent.
they're testing selling alcohol at the College World Series this summer, but it won't be available tomorrow. Rose Bowl of course is not an "NCAA Championship Event."
So drink up big-time at Moerlein!!!
On the "plus side", US Bank Arena has RC Cola on tap.
Good luck to U-M tomorrow ..... I'll be the one inside the arena with PSU gear on. US Bank Arena has pretty good sight-lines for hockey. Will be rooting for the fellow B1G team!

There was no beer at the final four in ATL. I had no idea and was pretty pissed, just assumed being in an NFL stadium there would be. Same the following year in Indy but I was ready for it then.
There could also be 3-ways and 5-ways as well, things getting pretty wild. Unless the Arena is a goldstar place and not skyline... then all bets are off.
*I'm formally neutral in this Cincinnati Chili discussion
Actually, I don't think there are ANY Goldstar Chilis downtown. If anyone is flying in: it is available at CVG.

I'll see if I can convince the Notre Dame alum I'm heading to Cincy with to hit up a Michigan pregame spot. He's having us go watch the 2nd of half of the Notre Dame/Wisconsin basketball game after the hockey game so...he kinda owes me.

Does anyone know if they let you leave and come back between games?

dumb rule: the Cincinnati Reds allow re-entry and it's great with the bars right there. But such is.

I was going by their web-site and my experience at the 2014 regional (strict no-entry, which sucked because there was a 75-minute break between games).

I wouldn't recommend it. It's somewhat dumpy. Carpets look like they were last cleaned 20 years ago.
There are some lower-tiered Hilton-branded hotels (Homewood/ Hampton Inn) downtown that just opened up in the 6th and Vine area. Right in the heart of downtown, by Fountain Square. Their price points is higher than the Millenium but it's still in that "budget-price tier" ($125-$150/night). That would be my personal reco in terms of a combination of (a) good location and (b) lower price.
21C hotel would be the recommendation is one is less concerned on money (~ $300/night), and is looking for a very unique, elecetic boutique hotel. That's also right by Fountain Square, 6th and Walnut.
