Michigan Hockey Pregame - Cincinnati

Submitted by redfirelx on

If anyone is visiting Cincinnati for Hockey Friday, I run the alumni club / spirit group here.

It's last minute, but anyone who wants to find fellow wolverines pregame should head to:

Moerlein Lager House

I'm planning on coming down on Saturday for the game if Michigan wins Friday night. We've been to that restaurant and plan on going Saturday.

Will you guys be there Saturday before the regional championship?

Any ideas on getting tickets to the Saturday game?

How early will you be there? I plan on going to the North Dakota vs Northeastern game. Will there be anything after our game or on Saturday?

I was going to aim for 4pm ish.

I guess I should have checked the schedule, I didn't realize the first game was at 2pm (really hoping for a tv crowd on that one!)

You're all on your own afterwards! :) #FridayNightParty

I've never heard of Smoq either. Eli's is a bit out of the way (its a hole in the wall place, but is always mobbed), but is very good. Montgomery Inn is a 10 minute walk or so from the arena. I think it gets overshadowed by the new restaurant boom in Cincy, a lot of good places have opened in recent years. Montgomery Inn hasn't changed much in 20 years, there's just some new memorabilia on the walls. It could use an update in my eyes. The good news is that the ribs haven't changed either - they're still very good. Worth the trip.

Someone mentioned Taft's in Over the Rhine, its a good place to grab a beer if you have extra time. It used to be a church that was built in the 1800s - the building was literally falling over. $9 million later, the place is beautiful and they have great beer.

If anyone has more time, go visit Taft's Ale House. You won't be disappointed. Best brewpub in the city as far as I'm concerned with a beautiful building and good food and brews. Hoping to go to the game on Saturday if all goes well.

Another note for anyone that may be going to Taft's, download the NoWait app. Sign up and you can get in line via the app. It will let you know how many are ahead of you and the approximate wait. You can show up 10-20 minutes before your time, check in w/ the hostess and grab a beer. Parking - Washington Park has a garage underneath it and is about a block South of Taft's and a block over from all the action in OTR on Vine. Don't stray too far from Taft's or the main OTR area. This used to be the worst area in the city and shit still happens unfortunately (not very often, but still).

they're testing selling alcohol at the College World Series this summer, but it won't be available tomorrow.  Rose Bowl of course is not an "NCAA Championship Event."

So drink up big-time at Moerlein!!!

On the "plus side", US Bank Arena has RC Cola on tap.

Good luck to U-M tomorrow ..... I'll be the one inside the arena with PSU gear on.  US Bank Arena has pretty good sight-lines for hockey.  Will be rooting for the fellow B1G team!

I'll see if I can convince the Notre Dame alum I'm heading to Cincy with to hit up a Michigan pregame spot. He's having us go watch the 2nd of half of the Notre Dame/Wisconsin basketball game after the hockey game so...he kinda owes me.

Thanks for the post. I'm heading down Friday and am going to catch both games. I Am staying at a hotel right in downtown and was looking for the best bar to watch basketball.

I wouldn't recommend it.  It's somewhat dumpy.  Carpets look like they were last cleaned 20 years ago.

There are some lower-tiered Hilton-branded hotels (Homewood/ Hampton Inn) downtown that just opened up in the 6th and Vine area.  Right in the heart of downtown, by Fountain Square.  Their price points is higher than the Millenium but it's still in that "budget-price tier" ($125-$150/night).  That would be my personal reco in terms of a combination of (a) good location and (b) lower price.

21C hotel would be the recommendation is one is less concerned on money (~ $300/night), and is looking for a very unique, elecetic boutique hotel.  That's also right by Fountain Square, 6th and Walnut.
