Michigan going after 3-star California OT Jarrett Patterson, current ASU commit

Submitted by markusr2007 on

With the coaching carousel still spinning, Michigan is trying to capitalize on OT Jarrett Patterson from Mission Viejo H.S. (Orange County, CA) - 3-star and current Arizona State commit.

Apparently Arizona State is going to finally announce Herm Edwards as new Sun Devils coach tomorrow, Monday, 2 December.

While this may only be a 3-star offensive lineman to some, I think UM fans should understand that Mission Viejo H.S. is one of the top premier high school football programs in the entire State of California  and dominant program in highly competitive Orange County (along with Mater Dei, Edison, De La Salle, Rancho Santa Margarita, etc.),

MVHS Diablos went 12-1 and finished ranked 6th in the state. Patterson was one of 3-team captains.

Thanks for the revisionism. I didn't say it was "impossible". In fact, I said we might improve from 1-13 to 4-10. But I'm not really good with 4-10.

If you think we'll flip the table from 1-13 to 13-1 with the recruiting gap we have I'd like to sample some of that kool-aid.

and "player development blah blah" still account for a huge amount of the equation and shouldn't be discounted so lightly.  Wisconsin regularly recruits lower rated players than Michigan and went 12-1 this season.  I don't have to remind anyone what happened with MSU this year.  Having a bunch of 4-5 star rated players certainly helps to win games as well.  I think both are extremely important.  I think OSU kind of underachieves despite the huge ratings of their classes, in truth.  Sometimes too many kids with lofty expectations for playing time and fame can work against team chemistry unless managed well by the coaching staff.

Yes, the last decade of the rivalry with Ohio hasn't been very favorable, but recruiting rankings of the respective classes isn't the only reason for it.

Because there is always some sort of unknown factor when it comes to 3-star recruits, I always like to look at their other offers to see if other coaches think the player is more talented than the recruiting services. Patterson's offer list looks decent but not eye watering.

ASU, Arizona, Cal, Boise, Indiana, Nebraska, TCU, UCF, UCLA, Virginia, Wash St., Wisconsin and bunch of lower schools.

They know who will thrive in their system. Some are rated pretty highly, some are not. I thiink we're seeing/will see the same thing here at some positions, particularly TE, LB, and hopefully DB. I just don't worry about where those players are ranked when Harbaugh or Brown want them. Here's to adding OTs and Frey to that list soon.

This thread brought out all the whiners that whine about recruiting while whining about 1-14 and UNACCEPTABLE!  And all while forgetting that Michigan had its worst coaches ever for a 10 yr span.  These people are the worst...

He's just outside the top 250 (No. 259) to 247Sports, which ranks him as the No. 21 OT.  For what it's worth, the No. 17 OT is committed to Alabama, the No. 26 OT is committed to Oklahoma, the No 32 OT is committed to FSU, the No. 40 OT is committed to Auburn, and the No. 41 OT is committed to Washington.  (In other words, while we would all love to have 5 star recruits across the board, it is not like this recruit is a flyer (at least, according to 247Sports).)

I think most people would agree, I’ll take coach Harbaughs highly trained eye over those complaining about his three star ranking. Like anyone else, I would love to be landing high 4 star and 5 star players like Ohio state. But the bottom line is that we need to show that we can be elite and send guys to the nfl consistently, year after year. Ohio will always have a slight recruiting advantage, but we can recruit really good players as well. Trust the staff, we will be fine.

There’s no fucking cult. The one thing most of the best players on this team have is they were recruited by Harbaugh and staff. There are 2 and 3 star players contributing in their first and second year while many of the higher rated upperclassmen have not been effective.
