Michigan Goal Line Stands

Submitted by Dr. Sap on

With all the talk about defense lately, I thought I'd share some great Goal Line Stands by some great Michigan Defenses of the past. (A Goal Line Stand being defined as stopping an opponent from scoring when they have a first and goal from inside the 10-yard line.) Enjoy!!

1993 Penn State. What a game.

My uncle (not a Michigan grad) was getting married that day, and the ceremony was just about to start during the second half, so I was sitting in the vestry of the church listening on the radio, putting the score up with my fingers every once in a while for my dad, who got stuck with usher duty. Drove him freaking nuts.

That evening was MSU-ND, IIRC. It was a Sparty wedding, and everyone was pretty much glued to the bar all night at the reception.

I attended the very first UM v PSU B1G game in Happy Valley.  Tyrone Wheatley and Derrick Alexander were magnificent, but the Defense set the tone.  1st and Goal at the 1/2 yard line late in the 3rd quarter in a very tight game.  M absolutely stoned them 4 straight downs and it wasn't even close.  You could hear a pin drop amongst the +100K PSU faithful - welcome to the B1G!  The goal line stand starts at 5:05:

win The Little Brown Jug last fall at Minnesota - I'll never forget it. It was right in front of me, as I was 25 rows up at the 5 yard line.

I was in the corner with my girls. First Michigan football game for my second daughter. We almost left after the pass was caught (thought he was in) but managed to get back and watch it.

They were startled at how enthusiastic I was. Great moment.

They have had at least half a dozen in the last few years... I remember a couple against Northwestern, vs Indiana, last year against Minnesota, that ugly game vs Akron, and perhaps more that escape me right now

fumble, be it at Crisler or burned, it will always be on display in my damn mind. As I've stated here and on other M sites, I now allow myself 10 minutes to allow a loss to sick with me now. However, that was a different time. I was 27 and the year was 1979. Charles White fumbled at the three to just add one more twist to the many knives we seemed to get at the RB. Only did ND Stadium equal or surpass the b.s. that went on out there, but that one call I just can't seem to flush and I should have been able to years ago.

Now I must open the damn link to see if that was it.

I'm happy I didn't have to see it again, the ball coming out and a M defender recovering it. But I don't think there is any other play, except for the wind dying to allow Harry Oliver to kick a frickin 50-51 yd field goal and listening to Ufer's disbelieving voice make the call. Both plays literaly make me ill. I'm not certain, but I think Lantry's FG might have been good as well.

Here's another one to add to the list.  Penn State 1998.  (Penn State seems to be a common theme)

Sam Sword, Tommy Hendricks and Marcus Ray with the stop.

9:09 in....

One of the best LBs I've ever seen while at PSU, I'll never forget him squaring up with TJ Duckett and A-Train, some of the most violent collisions I've ever seen. How the hell did he block so may field goals, btw...
