Michigan gets approval from neighborhood around the Big House to execute major fireworks

Michigan gets approval from neighborhood around the Big House to execute major fireworks after two football games this season.

Interesting comment from one resident who says all homeowners should know what they're getting into seven Saturdays a year by purchasing a house around the stadium.

I have absolutely no feelings regarding the fireworks. What bothers me is that everything has to get hyped up so frickin much. Just tell us Michigan is having fireworks and be done with it.

It is a product. Last I checked, I pay big money to get into a stadium, and I have certain expectations of what I will be receiving for my money. Now what you can argue about is what features define the product and which features diminish the value of the product... But make no mistake that it is a massive product and has been for decades.

13 Sepember 2014 marks the 200th anniversary of the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore.  That attack was witnessed by Francis Scott Key, who then went on to write the Star Spangled Banner based on what he saw.

That's the reason why there are fireworks scheduled for the Miami (Ohio) game--to support the Michigan Marching Band's performance of our national anthem.

Now I realize some people might ask in a John U. Baconish tone, "What the heck does Beyonce--I mean, the Star Spangled Banner--have to do with Michigan football"?  Hopefully, there won't be too many of them.

I'm curious how many people will be walking around pushing those glow necklaces, bracelets, etc? Also I hope Sparklers will be allowed in the stadium!

I don't live in the neighborhood immediately surrounding the stadium, but I live on the west side, and have no doubt the sound will carry over to where I live (as is evidenced by the past few 4th of July's).  I think it's an awesome idea that will be a ton of fun.  However, with a wife who inexcplicably hates fireworks, a dog who is deathly terrified of fireworks and an infant, I can understand anyone who is against this decision.  For others in the surrounding neighborhoods who don't live right next to the Big House, they indeed didn't sign up for this (whether or not it should be expected that the Big House makes the rules in Ann Arbor of football Saturdays is another story though).  When it actually happens, we'll see if the positive reactions to the fireworks can fight off  the wave of negatives that will surely come.

15 minutes of your life may be pestered by random lights and noise, lol, get a fucking grip people!

Go to the grocery store or something. Take a shit. Put some headphones on, watch your favorite porn and jerk it.

It's 15 minutes of an inconvenience for TWO days out of the year.

What do you all do during thunderstorms? What do you do when your power goes out? Are those also Dave Brandon's fault?

On second thought --- don't answer that.

I'm for the fireworks, but try looking at it a different way from your inconsiderate stonewall stance:

My wife hates fireworks for some reason (I know, it's weird).  When fireworks start going off, she gets real pissy and that lasts long after the fireworks.  Do you want to be around my wife when she's in a pissy mood?  I don't.

My daughter is ten months old.  She always puts up a fight when it's time to go to bed.  As I only have domain over my own house when she's asleep, getting her to go to bed in a timely manner is extremely important to me.  If she fully wakes up during the night, it's a guaranteed at least one hour of my time needed to get her to go back to sleep.  Thunder doesn't have the same effect if she's already out, but fireworks seem to wake her right up pretty easily.  It may be just 15 minutes 2 times a year for you and not a big deal, but it's a big deal for me and probably others who have very young children.

Also, my dog is deathly afraid of fireworks.  When he hears them, rather than huddling in a corner or under the bed, he goes nuts.  He can't be settled down and sprints around the house, jumps and crawls all over anyone in site and barks non-stop at the top of his lungs.  This also goes on for awhile after the fireworks stop.  Heaven forbid this happens while we're outside.  More dogs runaway on the 4th July than on any other day of the year for a reason.  Not only do I not want to deal with a dog tearing through the house, had the fireworks not woken up my kid by itself, my dog certainly will.

So, is it so unreasonably that some people maybe who would have to deal with similar drawbacks related to fireworks would be against them?  As much as you may personally enjoy them or maybe just be indifferent to them, there are people who's night can be ruined by this 15 minutes of random lights and noise.  Like I said, I am ultimately for them, but I by no means am going to brush off the dissenters as irrational (unless it's just the anti-Dave Brandon argument of course).

We have an air purifier running in her nursery which somewhat provides a little white noise for her, but I never thought to try something like that to drown louder noises.  Seeing as we have an iPod hooked up to speakers in her room at all times that we hardly ever turn on for her anymore, I definitely try that!  Thanks.

But decisions shouldn't always be made or not made because of the circumstances of a small minority.

We're not talking about a parade coming down your street.

We're talking about 15 minutes of fireworks.

It sucks for your family, I get that...but there are thousands of families that it doesn't suck for...why should they not get to experience things because of you?

--------------------------

My wife hates traffic jams...do I blame Dave Brandon and suggest everyone stay off the roads because I don't want to hear her bitch and moan? No. I deal with it. It's part of the job.

Extreme example, but the point is, your personal circumstances don't necessarily mean something should/shouldn't happen.

If it's that bad, maybe you should plan a trip? Go visit family in another city? Go get a hotel or make sweet/passionate love?

I'm being silly, but that's just the life. If shit bothers you that much, sometimes it's YOU that has to change, not everyone else.

If a loud party with 1 hundred people in attendance bothers 1 person, they can still get a noise violation. Yes, I know I'm using a legality to argue a common decency issue, but the fact remains that just because the heavy majority will enjoy something, it doesn't mean a small minority's dissapointment is irrational and that they need to change their stance. Also, babies and dogs won't change how they react to fireworks just because a ton of other people think fireworks are fun, which you seemed to suggest. Regardless, fireworks seem to be happening and I look forward to them.

I don't care one way or the other about the fireworks (though I'm not sure how impressive they'll looking during the afternoon of the miami game), but the AD's press release about "important" games is awesome.  Nothing feels more important than Miami of Ohio, with tickets selling for under $40.

Miami (OH) Halftime show is to be the 200th* anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner, evidently somebody thought it would be appropriate to have actual "bombs bursting in air" when the melody is played.

*September 14, 1814 was the date of the bombardment of Ft. McHenry, the Miami (OH) game is on September 13th.  So sue DB for being off a day.

I was just sitting around thinking that what the board could use today is another thread of fans bitching about Dave Brandon planning to have fireworks at Michigan Stadium this fall.  Imagine my delight when I clicked onto the site to find just that very thing.  Hooray.

Clearly this is a next-level traffic management effort offering a wider window of time for crowds to disperse.  Those declining an extra helping of WOW can still watch the entire game and leave ahead of the rest.

I lived in Burns Park for a couple of years. It was actually a lot quieter than I expected. We were on the far end of stadium parking, but it really was little impact.

I never had any issue with games at Crisler.
