Michigan in France

Sounds like a really great trip and something on my bucket list to see Normandy.  Didn't know this before but Coach Beilein is the nephew of one of the Niland brothers KIA.  For those who don't know Saving Private Ryan was about the Niland brothers.

an argument could be made that France outpaces the US in every measure you cite, certainly in education, healthcare, environment and infrastructure. And they spend much more efficiently on defense and, stereotypical jokes to the contrary, are quite capable in the battlefield. Even immigration is arguable, depending on where you stand vis a viscurrent American immigration policy.

...that it was the fact that WW2 was fought in Britain and France that had a large part in America's rise to power. Had their industries and populations not been severly damaged during the war things might be much different globally...

...However, it is hard to know if being in `an exploited but stable British or French colony would be better than being in a self-determined but exploited and unstable former British or French colony.

Maybe you should take up residence in France. "Quite capable in the battlefield" Ha ha. France has never proven anything on the battlefield. The Vikings and ARVN  laugh at this notion as do many others. Napolean was great at propagande and thats about it, and don't even mention that coward DeGaulle. Their military history is FAR from respectable. Outside of ANYTHING buckeye's I despise the French more than anything. Don't be fooled by those arrogant people.

I don't know why you'd say diversity of immigrant nations means the US is therefore "far more" desireable. Of course they're mostly from former French colonies. You think the big rise in the Latino population has nothing to do with the fact that we border Mexico or that we're the richest nation in the Western Hemisphere?

"Coach is way out in front trying to do something like this" - Don Brown

Jim Harbaugh does not get near enough credit for all he's done for this team and college football in general.

These trips are groundbreaking and says a LOT about his commitment to the young men who are expected to give so much of their time to the program throughout the year. My guess is that the vast majority of these guys have never been overseas and probable have few family members that have as well. So, they are living and experiencing something that will mean so much to them and those who are closest to them.

But this is also a challenge to other programs to do more to look out for the broader interests of the players.

Well Done Coach...

Very cool history there on Beilein. Saving Private Ryan is one of the best movies ever!

Normandy should be on everybodies bucket list.

I have a cool story about watching saving Private Ryan while deployed in Kosovo shortly in 02. I was stationed in Germany and there was a program there were an American unit would have a sister unit with a comparable German unit. The unit that was teamed up with my unit was a German special forces unit that, who we would train with or against every so often. Anyways, they were deployed in Kosovo when we were and each until spent a few weeks on each others bases. When we were in the German sector at there base we got together and watched saving Private Ryan. The movie was projected on to the wall of the tent they used for their chow hall. They had these big fold up tables that had benches attached, much like most elementary school have. The tables were pointed at the wall so we had to straddel the bench in a line to so everyone could watch. So, here we are, Americans soldiers on one bench and our German counterparts a few feet away on another. The movie starts and we get to the Normandy beach scene and the Germans are going crazy as it was showing the Germans hammering the Americans. I mean, they were taunting us (in a friendly spirted manor) to the point that we were a bit confused as it if they knew how the battled turned out. As soon as the Americans get the upper hand we errupt and start taunting them in a similar friendly manor. They quickly lose interest and beging filing out. We take this opportunity to laugh at them. However, that was shortly lived once we started hearing the music coming from their living areas and realized they were partying. Seeing that Americans soldiers are forbidden to consume adult beverages on deployment. We found out that night that the Germans did not have the same rules. All in all, I think that was probably the one movie watching experience I will never forget.

I saw SPR on its opening weekend, in a theater that was filled with an older audience, including many men who looked they could have served in WWII.

The film was fantastic, but my biggest memory wasn't anything on the screeen - it was the reaction of the audience.

You know how at the end of a great movie, the audience will spontaneously applaud? When the credits rolled, this audience was dead silent - except for the sound of elderly men sniffing, and their wives reaching for their purses to find Kleenex. A few couples sat there until the credits finished, just so the men could compose themselves. I heard one guy in the men's room say, "That was a little too close too real."

Which is a pretty good review, when you think about it.
