Michigan football rumors

Submitted by RioThaN on

After freaking thinking about it for long and since offseason is sloooow, I've decided to link this article I found yesterday, it's from chatsports and our doubted Ace Williams, but at least it's not about recruiting.

Please delate if not appropiate

Here are some nuggets:

Rumor: Al Borges is planning to run a hybrid pro-style/spread-option offense this fall.

Rumor: Several of the slot receivers will be asked to move positions this fall.

Rumor: Drew Dileo is turning heads.

Rumor: Tom Brady plans to come back for a game this fall and stand on the sideline.

 link here.

EDIT

The last 2 "notes" or "thoughts" in the article, since no one seems to have gotten a hold of them

Rumor: Darryl Stonum to be suspended for 4 games and then be evaluated by the coaches. The coaches have also privately discussed suspending him for the year and allowing him to come back.

and

Rumor: Players are getting JACKED up in the weight room. The problem with Mike Barwis’ methods is that he didn’t prep guys to take on a 335lb Wisconsin o-lineman.

It was during one of the commercial breaks or end of a quarter - but the PA announcer directed people to the north endzone where he introduced Woodley and then "some QB who played here a little while ago" and it was clearly Brady (I had really good seats), but the PA announcer never said "TOM BRADY".

Saw him play in high school in Louisiana. He's just a battling, get-it-done ballplayer. Excellent hands, BCS speed, runs great routes, is a smart player who really works on understanding the offense and where he fits in. And he's tough. Michigan needs a Wes Welker clone. I am not at all surprised he is turning heads. He's fearless. I can see Borges and Hoke loving this guy.

One of the Laws of Summer Hype is that each year, the strength and conditioning coach has the players working smarter/harder/more efficiently than the year before, and that it will "show on the field this year."

In reality, most (if not all) college S&C coaches are probably interchangeable in terms of quality.

Who says Barwis wasn't doing the job? He was doing his job to the T! Rodriguez wanted smaller, faster players, and that's what he did. Now Hoke wants bigger, stronger guys, albeit slower. That requires a different weight routine that Wellman is instituting. Different weight routine + 5000 calories a day (a la Craig Roh) = JACKED!!. Two of my friends on the team have both said that especially the O-Line is getting huge...

I'm not sure Hoke would agree with the implication that he'll willing to have players be any slower.  For that matter, as much as we heard that RR wanted more speed, other than at QB (obviously) and perhaps the OL, I don't think we really saw it.  Our defense was not fast by any stretch of the imagination, and our tailbacks and receivers weren't necessarily burners, either.

At the skill positions, the guys that come in usually come in with much less variability to their speed changes due to weight gain because their weights are already where they can run optimally quickly. You won't see that much variability in the speeds of DBs/WRs. But for O-Line, a lot of the designed QB runs involved pulling and hitting guys at the 2nd level... all of which requires a lot of agility given their size. I think you'll see a lot of sub-300 guys hit 300 at least given the shift from olympic lifts (Barwis) to powerlifting (Wellman). The trade-off is agility, but that's fine in a man-blocking power-running game.

As for the linebackers, they were criminally mismanaged as a group, as Brian has pointed out numerous times. Years of poor recruiting and mismanaged schemes. Roh as a linebacker? Come on. Demens as a midseason revelation? Really. Mouton was the only okay player and would have fit much better in a 4-3 where he was recruited. Most of our players were recruited to play in a 4-3 under and have already played this way in high school, keep in mind, and this 4-3 under given a poor coaching staff still managed to give us a 66nd defense in the country which would have been a godsend last season.

Of the 4 remaining position groups, one was faster? I don't know that Barwis was to blame (or credit), but recruiting wise we got a lot of guys who were smaller AND slower (including the skill guys). The idea was to offset size with speed. We gave up the size, but never really increased (maybe decreased) the speed outside of 1 QB.

Yeah I would agree with all of that except maybe the OL. I felt like the OL was a lot more mobile than I had seen from the preRR era. All I was trying to say was that the difference between 300 and 280 is a lot more than the difference between 200 and 180 speed wise.

Rumor: Brady Hoke literally craps gold nuggets.*

* This statement is just as credible as anything Ace Williams says. I have "pals" who are friendly with the Michigan coaching staff who have witnessed this.

Bleacher Report - as its name implies - is nothing more than a fan site, where anyone can post anything.  It's not a professional media outlet.

If Ace Williams has real insight to the players / coaches on the team, he would have announced the Kellen Jones / C. Pace news before anyone else.

Since I don't follow his website, I can't tell you this.  But if he was able to come up with those rumors (on his own) before anyone else - then I'd have to believe him to some extent.  But I really, really doubt he "broke" anything on Jones / Pace.

To play devil's advocate a bit - I could actually see him having some "sources" (the same that TomVH and Helmholdt had that said "buckle up for Kalis").  But his claims are often wildly more aggressive - he's got to be lying to some extent (e.g., it was "Kalis, Wilson, and Wormley will commit this weekend" - and while 2 of the 3 have, neither did it that weekend).

I haven't seen one report from him that I couldn't have written. He reads message board chatter and makes optimistic predictions or posts "rumors" that are little more than a regurgitation of that material. He is just relying on the fact that people are suckers for positive news about their team to become of voice of relative authority around these parts.

Should have just called this thread "MGoBlog". I hope you're right about Dileo, I'm excited to see what this guy becomes in our offense. I also hope we start getting a lot bigger, especially at the LB positions. I want to see some fireworks out there this year.

They are keeping plenty of surface wipes handy, I hope.....
