Michigan the favorite for Arnett? (FWIW; place in other thread if necessary)

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

I posted this comment in the UV thread but thought it might be worth posting on the board. Again, I have never posted stuff like this and wouldn't unless I trusted what I was told. If it turns out to be wrong, I apologize:

A close friend of mine who is very close with a prominent member of the MSU-related media was told that MSU is not interested in Arnett becuase of the way his original recruitment went down and that Dantonio doesn't like the kid and would not take him even if there was a need at WR, which there definitely seems to be. According to him, the ball is in Michigan's court; if they want him, that's where he will end up going.

I wouldn't post this unless I knew my buddy talked to his source. This guy is usually spot on when it comes to MSU stuff. He says they feel good enough about Bennie Fowler and Tony Lippett as future WRs anyways. I also know he wanted Arnett to play for MSU so he's not exactly excited about possibly conceding him to Michigan.

Again, grain of salt, FWIW stuff, but he's been right about 95% of the time with MSU stuff. I've also never posted anything of the sort and wouldn't unless I was confident in what I was told.

I don't understand his sentiment. If Dantonio and the Spartans decided they're going to hate everyone who ever turned down MSU for a better program or school they'd end up....oh wait.

I don't think it's just that they were turned down per se. It sounded like Arnett may have silently committed to their staff and then went the other way without any sort of indication. He just said there was an abnormal grudge being held against Arnett and his camp.

Also, if that's the case, how often does a situation like this ever arise? If Arnett really turned their staff off the last time he was recruited, it makes total sense for them to return the favor if he tried going there this time around.

wouldn't Arnett understand at this point that they hate his guts?  Why would he even be mentioning MSU as an option?  If I'd done what this guy claims Arnett did to MSU, I wouldn't be throwing their name around as a transfer option.  Unless it's just a screen so that he doesn't have to say "I want to go to Michigan."

Even if true, MSU will reconsider.  Their entire program survives by taking the few elite kids that for one reason or another don't choose Michigan.  They have to take them all.

Valid points, and they're ones I brought up when discussing the situation. He understood, but just said that he'd be beyond shocked if Arnett went to MSU and that it would make Dantonio look like a hypocrite based on comments he's made regarding the situation.

This thread is the Dantonio douche trifecta.  1 - He's holding a grudge against a kid for making what he thought was the best choice for his future.  2 - He's setting himself up to look like a hypocrite which happens pretty much whenever his lips are moving.  And 3 - and my personal favorite, he knows he won't get Arnett when we have Sugar Shane in the fold so he's acting like Hoke can have his castoffs.

Whether or not he is actually considering both UM and MSU, I would imagine that Arnett felt the need to mention both schools to make it clear to Dooley that he was transferring for family/geographic reasons, not to get to (or away from) any particular school.

So he'd be eligible to play as a redshirt Soph. the year after Roundtree and Stonum graduate?

Along with So/RFr. Dorbah and Chesson, RJr. J. Robinson, 5th Yr. Gallon, and Srs Dileo and Jackson

Yes Please!!!!

This would be very good for us, particularly if the NCAA grants him the hardship waiver. I hope that he and the coaches are interested and that this gets done.

Is there a concern that he will have a difficulty transferring since the SEC is like one step above JC academically?  We all know it is practically impossible for JCs to get into UM,

If Arnett goes Blue and gets the waiver to play next year, Michigan will have the best WR group in the B1G IMO.  Stonum, Arnett, Gallon, Roundtree, Dileo, and the progressing Jerald Robinson.  We might need it to cover up our very thin and inexperienced TE group next year.

Not to mention Darboh and/or Chesson. Both of those kids have more size than the listed guys and could potentially fight for some playing time. Either way our wr corps looks good, but if Arnett were to transfer to the good guys and be eligible to play right away, look out.

I don't see ANY reason why Dantonio would turn down a 4* receiver....he NEEDS a stud player he can hang his hat on now that we are recuiting the state again. I think this is bs but would love to see him go blue.

Not that I don't believe you, but IMO Dantonio would take a 4* recruit even if he found out the recruit humped his wife.

I feel like based on his history that Dantonio is a hard-headed guy who would absolutely do something like this. I was surprised to hear that they think Fowler/Lippett and even Keith Mumphrey will suffice along with Martin in the future. I think they need him a lot more than we do.

even want Arnett at this time.  It would seem to me that we are about a week off in these stars aligning.  We have limited spots and just got our second verbal commit at WR.  Maybe Hoke should call Jahu and tell him, "son, you are still welcome at Michigan but your going to be a walk on punter....sound good?  It's Michigan fer gawd sakes!"

I have heard that when someone transfers in, it doesn't count against the 25 or 28 player limit, but only against the hard 85 player scholarship limit. If correct, would this mean that we could accept:

  • 25 freshmen enrolling next September;
  • 3 freshmen enrolling immediately;
  • 1 transfer student in (Arnett.)

I'd be nice to know if this is correct or not.

Regarding remaining recruits,  I believe that Monty Madaris still has a visit planned, and that Stefon Diggs is still technically on the board. Any idea on how Arnett compares to them?

Obviously, the coaching staff would have to decide whether or not they wanted to take 28 plus Arnett. However, it is hard to turn away 4 star recruits. It also would be awesome to still have space for Josh Garnett, Jordan Diamond, Yuri Wright, and Armani Reeves. Kozan is the only other prospect I have heard much buzz about. Of course, Scout and Rivals have many others listed, but I don't get the sense that any of the other remaining prospects are realistically still being considered by (and still considering) Michigan.

Physically Arnett is same height as Diggs but lighter (167/185) and slower (4.5/4.43) he played 12 games at UT and had 242 yards and 2 TD's.

According to Mlive he is interested in UM but has concern about if there's enough room for him.

I agree that his releases come across as thoughtful and polished, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he had some help with drafting/revisions. But dude's a college student. He should sort of be expected to be able to put fingers to keyboard and have cogent English result.
