Michigan 17th in AP, 16th in Coaches'

Submitted by Wolverine15 on

we were not in the top 15 in either poll last week but we did end up 15th in the BCS. Hopefully, we can get into the top 14 before championship week.

EDIT: While the Coaches' poll had not been updated when I posted this, Michigan is still 16th in the Coaches'

Still, I don't see how they come up with these rankings.  Are teams just not allowed to move down unless they lose?  Michigan's resume is just flat out better than that of K-State, South Carolina, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

Well for one we'd never give up 110 points in consecutive weeks to Oklahoma and OSU like Kansas State did. Also, they're 1-2 against top-25 teams, their only win being a one point win over Baylor at home. They have worse losses and no signature win like we have.

their only two losses came against Top 15 teams, unlike one of ours, and we both have one Top 25 win, at home. Additionally, we both have a win against teams on the fringe of the Top 25 (ND for us and @ Texas) for them. There is no way you can objectively tell me that our resume is flat out better. That said, all that matters is Georgia losing to LSU or OU to OSU.

Beat a 7-5 FCS team at home by one.
Trounced a 5-7 MAC team.
Beat a 6-6 Miami team by four.
Beat #15 Baylor at home by one.
Beat 7-5 Missouri at home by four.
Beat 5-7 Texas Tech by seven at home.
Trounced a 2-10 Kansas team.
Trounced by #9 Oklahoma at home.
Lost by eight on the road at #3 OSU.
Beat a 6-6 TAMU team in OT at home.
Beat #23 Texas on the road by four.

I'll take Michigan's resume over that with no questions asked. We've blown out 8/12 opponents, with our two losses, ND and OSU the exceptions. I can't find the opponents records, but I know ours were better than that, I think by a long shot.

What are our signature wins? Nebraska and...Notre Dame? We played exactly 2 ranked teams all year - Michigan State and Nebraska. One of those was a loss, and the other got whooped at home by Northwestern. Our Sagarin Strength of Schedule ranking is 38th. K-State's is 9, Oklahoma's is 10.

Let's be fair - the Big Ten is having an off year and we had a very easy schedule. We skipped 2 of the best teams in the conference (Penn State and Wisconsin), and caught Ohio State in the midst of a meltdown.

Plus, do we REALLY want to face down Houston in the Sugar Bowl? They have one of the best offenses in the history of college football, and Case Keenum will not miss the wide open dudes like Braxton Miller did yesterday. Not to mention the fact that Houston is a lowly C-USA team and we're big bad Michigan, who only got in because we have a big fanbase. It's a no win situation for us.

I would presonally rather Michigan play Arkansas or Georgia in a New Year's Day bowl. It's a better match up for us and a more interesting game, IMO. Let some other bunch of poor SOBs deal with the all-time NCAA passing leader.

But I feel like for every Hawaii, there's a Boise/Utah/West Virginia. Plus, you kind of made my point for me. What does everyone remember about the 2008 Sugar Bowl? Hawaii being exposed. That wasn't some great accomplishment for Georgia or anything. They just got stuck playing a team from the WAC.

I guess my point is, I don't really understand why people are falling over themselves to find a way for Michigan to sneak into a BCS game, all for the right to play...Houston. I suppose it's cool to say you played in the Sugar Bowl, but us being left out would produce a much better game, IMO. I'd rather play an SEC team then a C-USA team, and I'd rather not be Houston's "we've arrived" moment.

Georgia finished #2 with that win. I would have much rather seen Georgia play USC than Illinois in that ugly Rose Bowl but a shot to play for a top five or ten ranking can be great for recruiting and build some momentum going into next season.

Pretty easy to argue that Michigan's resume is better than Oklahoma's.

Then #3 OU lost, at home, to unranked Texas Tech and dropped 6 spots to #9.  Then the next week, after beating Kansas St., they jumped to #6 and after a bye week and beating Texas A&M, they moved up another spot to #5.  Then OU went to Waco and ran into RGIII and Baylor, and lost their second game to an unranked team.

Michigan, by contrast, was undefeated (8-0) at home with both losses coming on the road to unranked Iowa, and ranked MSU -- who, as you know, won the Legends division and is defending co-B10 champion.

2 losses, both on the road, one to a ranked defending conference champion > 2 losses, one at home, to two unranked teams.  Simple equation to me.  The only difference is that OU was ranked pre-season, they beat a highly over ranked FSU as well as a highly over ranked Texas team.  Other than that, they've done nothing to impress me.  The OU love is repulsive and just shows what a joke the BCS is.

OU's loss to TT was worse than Iowa but Baylor is ranked now, and they are a pretty decent squad, so it hardly matters whether they were ranked at the time. OU killed Texas and KSU and didn't have much trouble with FSU, so I'd say their wins are better. Plus their season isn't over, so if they beat OSU they deserve to be ahead of us, if they lose they deserve to be behind us.

Baylor was not ranked when OU lost to them.  How can you say that it "hardly matters"?!?  Baylor has the Heisman winner, IMO, in RGIII and that is about it.

FSU is not a good team and was riding their pre-season ranking.  After beating the powerhouses of ULA-Monroe and Charleston Southern (who?!?) they lost 3 in a row to OU, Clemson and Wake Forest, and although they've come on and won some good games, they lost last week to UVA.

Texas sucks -- I live in Austin, and UT people are really pissed!  The only reason that Texas was ranked #11 when they played OU was to "pump up" the Red River Rivalry before the game -- everyone knew that OU was going crush Texas, it was all for ratings and rankings.

The computers and voters love OU, and if they lose to OkSt., they're still going to be ranked ahead of Michigan.  It's crock of shit.  They have no defense and their dbag coach makes an ass of himself every game -- and I'm not even a Texas fan.

...really one of the worst I've seen in ages.  We should definitely be ahead of K-State and South Carolina, at least.

But the problems aren't just with us either.  Wisconsin at #15????  Were the voters actually watching that game?

Why is Arkansas ahead of Oregon?  Because they are in the SEC?  Oregon almost beat LSU--the same can't be said for Arkansas.  Actually, Oregon and West Virginia put up more points against LSU than ANY SEC team.  In other words, I agree completely.  What a complete mess.  I saw ESPN touting Trent Richardson for Heisman.  Actually, Montee Ball has done much better (more yards, touchdowns, etc) and against the best competition.  If you look at their split stats on CfbStats.com, Richardson has only 3 touchdowns against teams with a winning record.  Montee Ball has 11.  Ugh

we should pass georgia (lose to LSU) and oklahoma (if they lose to okie st.)   also AP poll doesn't count.  and includes USC.

coopdeloop1

then we would be be screwed. Georgia goes to sugar as conference champ, with LSU BAMA in NC game giving SEC 3 teams which is not supposed to happen let alone 2 teams in NC game that didnt win their conference. Houston is automatic qualifier based on ranking, leaving only 1 true at large spot which would be Stanford to the Fiesta.

After the BTCG, this won't matter, but it seems like a possibility that Wiscy passes us this week and we actually drop a spot in the BCS standings.  I say it doesn't matter because we'll pass the loser of the BTCG and be behind the winner.

Championship week is here, so I'm going to assume that the loser of the B1G 10 'chip, SEC 'chip, and if Oklahoma lose vs Okie St, will fall down and move us up hopefully.

Red is Blue

November 27th, 2011 at 1:34 PM ^

If Georgia loses the SEC " 'chip" then we go ahead of them, not true if LSU loses.  In fact if LSU loses, that could be doubly bad news as the SEC might get 3 BCS teams, reducing the available at large bids .  Agree on BTCG loser and OK if they lose to OK St.  While not necessarily likely, Iowa State beating K State and Oregon losing to UCLA are other possibilities. It wouldn't hurt if Baylor lost to Texas.

There is no way that they put two 1-loss, non-conference champions from the SEC into the NCG when there are other 1-loss teams available. I already doubt that Bama will make it in ahead of OSU if they best OU. OSU will have a better ranking in all of the computer rankings and I think voters will move them up past Bama. If OSU wins and LSU loses, they might even jump to #1.

It comes down to only one thing for us:  LSU needs to beat Georgia in the SEC championship game.

That will knock GA below us in the BCS rankings and ensure that the F'ing SEC does not take 3 BCS slots.

You could have made some serious money from me if you bet me that I would ever root for an all-SEC national championship game consisting of 2 SEC teams in the same division that had already played each other.  But that's where we are.

Um, go SEC!

MGoSoftball

has to be in the mix as well.   They WILL jump us in the BCS if they beat Texas.

So to guarantee a BCS we need:

      1) Georgia to loose to LSU

      2) Texas to beat Baylor

      3) Okie St to win

I think we're a little underrated, but by the logic of the polls, I can understand it.  We beat a 6-6 team by six points.  Of course, it was a rivalry game, and that 6-6 team had some players eligible against us that it didn't have earlier in the season, but a lot of voters won't realize that and just conclude it was a "blah" performance that doesn't need to be rewarded.

Whatever - it's just nice to be in the rankings again.

Even though it seems to me it is NOT necessary in order for us to go BCS, I am shocked to see so many basically assuming that OK St. will beat Oklahoma. As great as OK St. has been, Oklahoma is still a damn good team, and I honestly am forseeing an Oklahoma win. Just interested to hear your thoughts on this..?

Well it is at OSU, and Broyles isn't playing. But yeah, OU could still win. If OSU loses, we just can't get jumped by anyone like Baylor, which I don't see happening, or Clemson, who could because they play #3 or 4 VaTech, who they beat by 20 at VT earlier in the year.
