Submitted by Eye of the Tiger on

We are now ranked #16 in overall S&P+. That's up 5 spots from last week. We have:

  • #53 offense
  • #6 defense
  • #71 special teams

Other schools of note:

1. OSU (#4 offense, #14 defense)

3. Wisconsin (#35 offense, #1 defense)

8. PSU (#25 offense, #8 defense)

14. Notre Dame (#22 offense, #24 defense)

39. MSU (#103 offense, #12 defense)

55. Iowa (#108 offense, #19 defense)

Also, for those who follow former UM coaches:

31. Arizona (#5 offense, #103 defense)

105. Tennesee (#120 offense, #61 defense)

I understand that S&P+ is supposed to account for strength of schedule, but the only way I see Wisco having the #1 Defense is that they haven’t played anyone with a real consistent offense.

Other then PSU Michigan hasn't played anyone with a consistent offense either and PSU put up 500 yds and 42 points against the UM defense.

According S&P these are the rankings of the offenses UM's defense has faced:

Florida - 105

Cincy - 106

Air Force - 48

Purdue - 71

MSU - 103

PSU - 24

Rutgers - 121

Minnesota - 104

Maryland - 96

We'll see. We have the overall speed advantage, but our DL depth will be greatly tested, especially if Gary is banged up. If our offense gets stiffled the D is going to wear down too much and Wiscy will blow us out of the water in the 4th qtr like they have pretty much everyone else.

I think the past ten years indicate that it’s really freaking hard to beat a top 10 (5?!) team on the road. Add in the fact that our offense is very one dimensional and Wisconsin’s defense is as good as ours (statistically speaking) and I’m not expecting us to win this game.

The only data point we have from this year is the PSU game, and I think Wiscy is about as good.

Again, anything can happen. I’ve been waiting for the surprise upset Michigan victory for the past, you guessed it, ten years. Here’s hoping it happens this time.

S&P removes garbage time, hence the rise.  Would expect that Glen Mason doesn't believe in any of that newfangled "math".  But you would hope more Michigan fans would.

Yes, internet tough guy Gary, good teams play until the final whistle.

Wisconsin pantsed an Iowa team that crushed OSU the previous week. Iowa had 66 yards and 5 first downs against Wisconsin. The only thing that kept the score respectable was two pick sixes. I think we are better than Iowa on offense, but we need to bring our A game to have modest success.
