Michigan's Lacrosse schedule so far

Submitted by twotrueblue on November 28th, 2018 at 4:32 PM

I know many of you won't care, but for those who find lacrosse interesting in the slightest, the schedule this year is going to be an interesting one even though it hasn't been officially announced yet. I found 11 games out there, but I'm sure there will be more added later.

1. Ohio State's lacrosse schedule came out today, and it officially announced The Game (lacrosse version) will be on the last weekend of regular season play. Previously it was on the third weekend of Big Ten play.

2. Based on rotation, Johns Hopkins should have been an away game this year, but the Big Ten swapped that and gave us back-to-back home games vs. JHU and back-to-back away games at Rutgers. This gives Michigan a conference game in the state of Maryland on an annual basis. Helps with recruiting a little bit.

3. Also, a game against Yale in Atlanta. They're the reigning National Champion and also secured the transfer of the #1 faceoff guy in the nation in TD Ierlan. This game will not be pretty for UM.

So here is what I can piece together of Michigan's lacrosse schedule thus far (I'm guessing 3 more games to be announced):

Sat., February 9 @ Cleveland State

Tue., February 19 vs. Drexel

Sun., February 24 @ Jacksonville (Moe's Lacrosse Classic)

Sun., March 10 vs. Yale in Atlanta, GA

Sat., March 16 @ Marquette

Sat., March 23 vs. Delaware

Sat., March 30 vs. Johns Hopkins

Sat, April 6 @ Maryland***(implied based on other B1G Schedules)

Sat., April 13 vs. Penn State

Sat., April 20 @ Rutgers

Sat., April 27 vs. Ohio State

Thu., May 2 B1G Semifinals in Piscataway, NJ

Sat., May 4 B1G Championship in Piscataway, NJ

Schedule Overview (again to clarify, this is the unofficial schedule & there will be more games than this):

Cleveland State, Drexel, Jacksonville, and Delaware should be wins at this point for the Michigan program.

Marquette, Penn State, Rutgers, and Ohio State are toss-up games. Marquette and PSU were wins for UM in 2018.

Johns Hopkins and Maryland are the cream of the crop in the B1G, and a victory over either would likely have to be the biggest upset in program history.

And Yale, well that's going to be a slaughterfest. The only reason UM was within a few goals of Yale last year was because the Ivy League doesn't allow practice until February, and it was Yale's second game of the season. Give that team a whole month to practice, and they will do wonders.

2019 will be the 8th season. Here's the past 3 seasons:

2018: 8-6 (beat #4 Notre Dame and #14 Penn State & went 1-4 in B1G Play in Head Coach Kevin Conry's first year, losing to JHU by 1 goal and losing to OSU by 3 goals)

2017: 8-6 (beat #10 Penn & went 0-5 in B1G Play, losing by an average of 8 goals in B1G Play & then fired Head Coach John Paul)

2016: 3-10 (lost to Dartmouth and Marist & went 0-5 in B1G Play)

John Paul did build the program from a club sport and is a huge reason that they were able to move up to D1.

However, he had 6 years to recruit and build pretty much anything. His only winning season was his last. He did manage to beat Penn, but then went 0-5 in B1G play again. In fact, in B1G play, he was 1-14 overall. I think he got cut a little slack because he got the program to where it was, but without showing any improvement at all, I think that his firing was pretty warranted. Honestly, I'd love to have seen him stay on in an administrative role like Associate AD of Lacrosse, but I'm not sure he would have gone for that.

WInning that Penn State game was a nice cap to the season, gave them some good momentum and something to build on this year. Hopefully its the leg up they need to get the B1G hump this season.

Schedule looks pretty favorable for a program that could make a leap this year. Those out of conference games should be W's (with the exception of Yale). They weirdly have to get the Rutgers monkey off their back - they really have Michigan's number and blew them out last year. And they have to get their shit together against Ohio State; they were down last year and Michigan blew an opportunity to beat them. Weirdly I think they're going to beat Hopkins one of these days.

GO GET EM CONRY!!! GO BLUE!!

I like that switch in the schedule, splitting home-and-homes with Maryland and Hopkins so they're not both on the road or at home in the same year.

It would've been cool to see Michigan play Utah in the first game this season. In the last few years they've taken on new programs in their inaugural games (that's how Cleveland St got on the schedule and I think there were others as well but its been a while since a new team joined Div 1). I would like to see Michigan make a tradition out of that. Utah is the biggest addition since Michigan.

I would also like to see more games in the NY/NJ region to get kids in those areas. They should be scheduling more games vs teams in the NYC area: Hofstra, Stony Brook, St. John's. And while it would likely result in L's, it would still be fun to see them play Syracuse and Albany, might even help them get some recruits from those areas as well.

It sure would be nice to play some different teams especially Syracuse or Albany. However, there may not be too much room in Michigan's schedule.

My guess is one of those unannounced games would be Notre Dame for the rivalry factor. It wouldn't surprise me if they played Mercer or Furman while they are in the Atlanta area.

Looking at potential home-and-home agreements, Penn and Siena could be possible teams to fill the schedule. Michigan has played Penn the last three years and would probably like a visit from Penn after going to Philadelphia for two of those games. Michigan played Siena last year and could have a home-and-home with them, but maybe not.

So I wouldn't be surprised if Notre Dame, Mercer/Furman, and Penn filled out the schedule.

But who knows, maybe Notre Dame isn't on the schedule, and instead Michigan plays a team like Syracuse, Albany, or even Virginia or Duke.
