Michigan's D line is meeting all the high expectations so far

Submitted by Duval Wolverine on

I havent seen this posted anywhere so I it has, my bad!  The Wolverines are leading the nation in tackles for loss right now with (44) and tied for no.1 in the country in sacks with (17).

The defensive line is doing a lot of great work, but the LBs deserve a lot of credit for the TFL and sack numbers. Down to down the defense has been great, only a few busts have dragged them down.

The individual numbers actually show a higher proportion of those TFL's and sacks are by the DLine than one usually expects.  Plus, the linebackers can't come clean if the DLine isn't doing their job.

Not sure if you were pulling from another site, but ESPN has us at first on our own with 18 sacks. I think the LBs that were a big question mark going into the season also have helped a lot with this D as well. Awesome all around play and definitely a by-product of Don Brown as well.

I'll be interested in the UFR (shock, I know), but my sense is that McCray continues to absolutely crush expectations, and Gedeon continues to outpace them... though very hot-and-cold: great instincts one play, overcommitted (particularly to the run) on others.

Let's hope they keep its up against better competition.

But holy shit, 44 tackles for loss in 4 games is ridiculous. And 17 sacks already? Did we ever have that many sacks in any year in Hoke's tenure? Hoke's regime always seemed to have a solid rush defense but absolutely zero pass rush.

If you don't know by now, as this board will kindly (or not so kindly) remind you, there's no need to tell posters to focus on the next game. The fans' focus has nothing to do with the outcome of next week's game. Any given fan can focus on whatever s/he wants: the next game, the OSU game, last week's game, or, hell, even what they want to have for dinner in a month. Players and coaches is another matter, but that's likely not your place either.

This has probably already been discussed, but the Noah Furbush sighting will help with depth. It's crazy to think about how good this defense could be fully healthy. If only Jeremy Clark could have avoided the tragic knee injury. Man that sucks for him.

Crazy to think we probably should have those guys if not for a complete collapse at the end of the 2013 season. Holy shit, what an embarrassment of riches that would've been. Not to mention we lost Willie Henry to the draft last year. And yet we still have the best d-line in the country when completely healthy.

It feels good to have that kind of numbers when we have played four spreadish teams. We use to provide those eye popping numbers to our opponents. Now, here we are with those numbers. We have two more teams with spread and I hope this trend continues especially against that one team I worry about in November. I meant Indiana. /jk
