MI DL Damon Knox to MSU

Submitted by DGDestroys on

Scout is reporting that Muskegon DL Damon Knox has committed to MSU. For anyone wondering, it's been reported here multiple times that his grades wouldn't be good enough to net a scholarship offer. Best of luck to the kid, even if he's off to Sparty.

Why did he commit?

"That coaching staff is amazing,” he said about the Spartans. “They’re so energetic and never flat. I constantly hear from them and they really want me. They make me feel very wanted…I love that program.”

By the way, this kid was just declared eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse, so him committing to MSU instead of UM isn't about grades. I'm not saying MSU beat UM for him (maybe UM cooled off or is looking at someone else), but he is eligible to play for any program he has an offer from.

As you see with Conway, UM also takes commitments from borderline guys hoping that they are cleared to play.

Despite what you want to believe, the University of Michigan doesn't have higher standards for its football players than any other Big Ten school (and neither does Notre Dame, even if they want you to believe that). UM will allow a player to sign as long as NCAA Clearinghouse says he is eligible. The only Big Ten football program that has higher academic standards than merely being "eligible" is Northwestern.

but years ago, a top Michigan high school basketball player committed to Michigan.  He ultimately wasn't admitted and then got a scholarship from -- drum roll -- OSU.  As I said, this was years ago and maybe things have changed, but I still think guys get into some B10 schools, but can't get into Northwestern and Michigan.
