MGoSuggestions: Buffalo Wild Wings or Scorekeepers

Submitted by Darth Wolverine on September 12th, 2012 at 12:52 PM

I am looking for suggestions on where to watch the night games this Saturday. I'm coming Saturday morning from the Cleveland area, tailgating, going to the game, and then heading to a bar/restaurant for the night games.

Ira and Sam always talk about Scorekeepers (obviously because that is where they do their post game show), but I saw some reviews online about that place and many people complained about terrible service and some other stuff. I know where the BW3 (I believe it is on South State Street, might be mistaken on that though) is on campus, as I have been there before.

I want to go to a place that has a plethora of televisions with SOUND for the night game(s). I'm assuming the bars with sound will have the sound for the ND/Sparty game, which is what I really want. So, which should I go to, BW3 or Scorekeepers?

Watch the games? BWW

Food? BWW (Do NOT eat at Skeeps. Tried it once. Regretted it immediately)

Hot (possibly not 21) college girls getting hammered? Skeeps

Especially on saturday night, Skeeps will turn from "sports bar" into "college shit show bar"

 - note, I may or may not have frequented Skeeps for a time. It's good at what it is. But it's not where you want to be to watch a game.

Scorekeepers, aka SKEEPS, turns into a nightclub filled with underaged undergrads in the evenings. While the games might be winding down while it starts to get busy I don't know of anyone who has actually gone to Skeeps to watch a game.  Between those 2 I would say 100% go to BWW. You also might want to check out some other options in Ann Arbor.  I have some friends that swear by The Arena.

I care about listening to the game. I guess I should have said this in the OP, but I'm married (got married August 25), so going to a bar with young college girls sounds like a great time, but unfortunately I can't partake in that stuff anymore. <sigh> Oh to be young again. I'm 30 now, but I'd love to be 23-25 again.

Anyway, when it's football season, I'm all about watching every game possible. I'm the guy who sits on my couch watching 12 hours of football every Saturday. I watch the Thursday and Friday night games also. I'm a CFB junky and have no shame in saying that. I hate watching football with no sound because it just takes away from the great experience of watching it.

Yeah, I'd agree about the whole college girl thing.  It might be fun for a couple of minutes, but you'll literally have NOTHING to talk about with them, and when I was on campus I remember Skeeps being one of the least game-friendly bars around.

As others have noted, I've heard good things about the Arena.

I would recommend against going to a corporate bar located on the former site of the historic Frieze Building.  I'd say screw watching late games and just go to Ashley's and enjoy, but hey, that's just me.

Which had been closed for a really long time by the time the building was demolished for the high rise, if memory serves.

BW3 is just as much an improvement at that site as NQ is for the Frieze block. Having spent three days a week there the last two years before it closed, the Frieze really needed to go.

Just hate the idea of a large corporate bar behemoth being the best sports bar option in AA.  You expect that in Mount Pleasant and other MAC cornfield towns but in a City where independent retailers have always been promoted (yeah, I hated waiting for Shaman Drum books as much as the next guy), you'd think some entrepreneur could develop a unique business down there.

I frequent skeeps and never run into any problems w/ service. The wings are easily better than BWW as well, and far cheaper. Haven't been to the Arena though. Do note that it can be hard to hear in Skeeps with all the college kids.

There is one Bar Louie downtown Cleveland and one in Westlake (suburb of Ctown) that my wife and I frequently attend. I was unaware of one being in AA, but like someone else said, there is no sound there. I simply hate watching football with no sound. It takes away from the experience.

Between the two you mentioned, I would definitely go to BWW if you intend on actually paying attention to the game as well, but The Arena is a good place too, or if you can get a little further from campus, Fraser's on Packard isn't bad either really.

Agree with all sentiments. BWW between the two you mentioned. Arena if you want to stay downtown area.

Maybe Damon's if you want sound and don't mind being out by the mall.

Fraiser's is a good local institution off Packard.

Ann Arbor really needs some better sports bars if we have people considering BWW or Skeeps as reasonable options...

Yes, The Arena might fit the bill, but it's sad that Ann Arbor otherwise lacks a local sports bar with good TVs, good food/drink options and a good atmosphere.
