MGoQuestion: Can Michigan win the 2017 NCAA Tournament?

Submitted by ThatGuyCeci on

Now that the field of 68 is set, how does everyone feel about Michigan's possible chances of making a deep run? Realistically, I think this team can make the Final Four and possibly even the final game.  I think Duke will make it from the other side and I'm not sure we'd have enough to beat them in their current state.  However, I don't think our draw is too terribly difficult considering the 2 seeds we could have drawn (Duke, Kentucky, Arizona), and Oregon lost a starter for the year recently. According to KenPom, Kansas is the worst 1 seed in the field.. what say you?

They have about as good a chance as anyone.

Since the loss to OSU, Michigan has been playing like a 1 seed. Which is really quite incredible. Walton is outperforming Trey Burke over his past 15 games. They're playing top 30 quality defense. Everyone is playing well.

If they had been playing like this all year, they'd be one of the tournament favorites. What's holding them back right now is a 7 seed path.

in final regular season rankings.  Coaches poll we were #26.  I see us getting to KC, and our season ending there.  Hope Beilein takes the team out for steaks at Plaza III

Most of the higher-seeded teams have a much easier path to the sweet 16, but if we somehow get through the first weekend it could get really exciting.

IMO Beilein is a great tournament coach, and Michigan has one critical advantage - 5, or even 6 guys who on any given day can light it up. In a 6 game elimination tournament, it's great we don't have to rely only on one or two guys to score.

Of course, we'd need Walton to keep up his stellar play - a hot pg is gold in the NCAAT.

Odds aren't great, but it's not impossible.  I have us losing to Kansas in the elite 8, but I wouldn't really be shocked by any outcome.  We got a pretty tough first round draw, and Lousiville is no joke (although the 2 line in general is pretty strong this year).

We might win one game. 50/50 shot. If we win, we will lose to Louisville.

I'm happy with a B1G Tourney Championship banner. Great season for these guys.

As well as Michigan has played of late, there are some other REALLY good teams in the NCAA tournament with quite a bit more athletic ability across the roster.  Beilein is a great coach, but sometimes that is not enough.  If we get to the Sweet 16 I'll be really happy, because that would mean we'd beat Slick Rick and his Brothel Boys.

I say no. Only because I thought they wouldn't make the tourney. Then I didn't think they'd win the B1G tournament. So here's hoping I'm 0 for 3.

This team is almost as offensively efficient as the 2014 Elite 8 team, but with better defense. That team was a buzzer beater away from the Final Four. So I'd say we have a shot.

We are either going to lose this weekend, or make the final four, imo.

they are playing as well as anyone in the country right now.  doing it over 6 more games is a tall task.  but i guarantee that no team is looking forward to playing UM right now.  They are just eviserating the opponents' defenses, and we aren't really shooting the 3 that well lately.

that said, i'm a bit worried about the Ok St game.  they are a jekyll-hyde team.

Well, as I recall, a 7-seed has made the Final Four only twice since 1985, so if we're going to use historic trands as a basis for judgment, then I won't hold out much hope as much as I would love to put on maize-and-blue glasses here. I mean, the 7-seed has only made it to the Elite Eight a mere nine times since 1985, if I remember the numbers from BracketOdds correctly - that would be an achievement unto itself in a way.

or are the 10 seeds easily better as a group than the 9 seeds?

Wichita St, VCU, OK St and Marq - 10 seeds

MSU, VaTech, Vandy and Seton Hall - 9 seeds

No contest, imo.

It's certainly been the weirdest 12 months in sports that I can remember. Cubs win WS in 3-1 comeback, Warriors blow 3-1 lead in NBA, 0su and Urbz shut out in CFP, Northwestern makes the dance, Villanova buzzer beater to win the NCAA tourney, Clemson beats Bama on last second TD, Pats and Brady overcome 25 point deficit to win SB, Leicester City wins Prem league. I think this is probably the year I would want a big ten tourney champ Michigan team who survived a plane crash to make a run in the tournament. Wouldn't even be the weirdest thing to happen in the past 12 months

You make a lot of pertinent observations regarding the 2016-17 bizzaro world we have experienced. You forgot the big one: a casino-owning real estate mogul turned reality TV Star with no public service experience becomes President. I say, why not Michigan? Walton and Irvin are probably the highest quality senior guard duo, offensively and defensively, in the country. (Yes, Irvin is a shooting guard/shooting forward.) Wilson has shown he can play defense against elite big men. It's going to be all about the foul situation-- avoiding them and making them. That will determine the close games we play.

It is possible.

It is also possible that I fly to the moon; however, it is not probable that I fly to the moon.

I'm guessing Michigan can do some damage, but I doubt they win it all.

Who am I??!?

We will be doing very well to win two games.  After the first round, every game we play will likely be against an opponent better than anyone we faced in the Big Ten tournament. Projecting us to the finals isn't remotely realistic.  Seriously.  You want to hope?  Knock yourself  out.  But don't insult intelligence.
