MGo Poll: The Victors (cont)

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

On the eve of Team 134, I thought it was appropriate to continue my poll called "The Victors".  This is the third and final tally.  I have asked this question twice before so if you already answered this question please comment but refrain from voting.

Originally I was asked my my 7 & 8 year old neices to teach them the "whole" words to the fight song not just the "Hail" part.  So that brought me to ask the original question:

How many MgoBloggers know the lyrics to The Victors?  How many know that the first word of the march is not "Hail".  The first word is "Now".  If you answer in the affirmative; do you sing it during pre-game?

The current tally is 57% (39/65) Yes.

I do not sing it on the regular(I have a very deep voice not made for singing), but on occasion when we make a big play and the band ques I might hum it or sing

... people who do not know it may be embarrassed to admit it in this blog.  On that note.

I do not know the lyrics to The Victors by heart.

I did not know the first word was Now.

Do I sing it in pregame?  N/A given above.  I usually clap and wait, and wait, and then start in during the chorus.  Usually a beat too late.  I'm not musically inclined.

But when Devin Garder says, "Let's Go" I yell, "Blue".  That one I got.

They should really start singing the entire thing at hockey games. And making everyone do the whole thing. They're so damn good at synchronizing that no one could not learn the words after a few times. Plus they do the full version much more often than the football band.

The band coming in for the first time in a season is one of the things I look forward to most...

"Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting the 235 member Michigan Marching Band...Baaand take the field!!!"

I get chills just typing it!

Yes, I know all the words.  I was in the Men's Glee Club my freshman year, so I sang Varsity and The Victors back to back at tailgates about 10000 times.

(I sing both regularly to my four month old son, when he needs entertaining.  Looking forward to his first football season!)

Yes and yes. Taught myself the lyrics maybe 12 years ago (not too hard, since I, er, already know the melody) and began to sing along, with a few errors. I was inspired by Mr. Cox, who was a sponsor of some youth events I used to participate in years earlier, who could and did sing the entire song unaccompanied while driving guys down to Cedar Point.

Those who are interested in really learning it ought to search Youtube for vids of the glee club singing it; quite rousing. The Women's Glee Club has a decent video of it, too (both come with Varsity--who knows the chorus to that?--and you can also find the Alma Mater).

My favorite improv of Varsity was in '98 or '99 when a couple guys in the student section just sang the word "Varsity" over and over on melody. Worked pretty well.

No, not all of it. And I thought the first words were "Now they come with banners flying" or something like that. I always just hummed it.

EDIT: I feel like this should be posted here, so we can all learn up.

Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
Here they come with banners flying,
In stalwart step they're nighing,
With shouts of vict'ry crying,
We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, Hail!
Far we their praises sing
For the glory and fame they've bro't us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Far we their praises tell
For the glory and fame they've bro't us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Here they come, Hurrah!

(chorus)

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The leaders and best!
Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!

(break strain)

We cheer them again
We cheer and cheer again
For Michigan, we cheer for Michigan
We cheer with might and main
We cheer, cheer, cheer
With might and main we cheer!

(chorus)

I know it all. Learned it in glee club and it never leaves you. Our tradition was actually to sing Varsity and The Victors. Varsity goes: Men of Michigan onto victory Every man in every play Michigan expects her Varsity to win today! Rah rah rah rah rah Cheer for Michigan Varsity down the field Be yield raise high her shield March onto victory for Michigan and the maize and blue Oh Varsity we're for you, here for you to cheer for you We have no fear for you oh Michigan (hope I got it all correct!)
