Unless said students are writing about football, politics, or some other commonly vandalized subject (William Howard Taft?), Wikipedia is a useful source of information. Science articles in particular tend to be fairly accurate, and the few low quality articles are fairly easy to spot.

Wikipedia is a useful source of information, but not one to be cited. You find the info you need, and then you cite Wikipedia's source instead. Or if it's not cited in Wikipedia, at least you have something concrete you can look up and find your own source for.

No encyclopedia - be it World Book, Britannica or whatever - should ever be used as an academic source, period. Wikipedia has the extra issue of being open to vandalism, but that alone is not the reason why it isn't credible. It's not a primary source.
