META Search broken

Submitted by poseidon7902 on

i've always had problems finding topics which weren't on the first page of the forums.  Not sure if this an isolated problem or more.  When a topic falls off the first page, if you tell the forum to go to the second page it takes you to some random posts that may not have even been on the first page for weeks.  That problem aside (If you can tell me how to resolve that, please do), if I do a search now for any word I get the following error:

404. That’s an error.

A lot of the times when I try to go to the second page on the MgoBoard it flips to the Diaries. So I will have the same section of Diaries on the right side of the page and no Mgoboard.

I have always wanted to ask this question, but never did for some reason. Either way this looks like a good opportunity to get an answer.

At least for opening different pages of the forum, this is the most effective workaround. As far as I know, and I could be wrong, the fact that it only occasionally works in the same tab is a site caching issue (it does work if you catch it at a good moment - try it at 1 AM or something *grumble grumble I know*). The search engine is a relatively recent development that was mentioned via Twitter so we shall see - I mean, googling "MGoBlog" and then whatever topic works fine too, but it would be nice to have that function back.

As an example of what I mean by not seeing posts the way they should, here's what I see if I go to page 2 using the navigation at the bottom of the first forum page.

For the sideboard, sort comments by recent before clicking to the next page. Personally I use mgoblog.com/tracker because it includes the most recent comments for the board, front page and diaries.

You can also go to Google and search this site only. Type in your query, then hit space and type :mgoblog

I did notice that when Brian deleted the cache on the tracker that it doesn't update instantly like it had in the past. Don't know what the cause or solution to that might be, but it's real and has lasted a few weeks.

I have been unable to use the search ever since The Great Crash of 2015.  I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to stress out the site's producers.

Pro tip: If you're trying to search for something on a website with a shitty search function, use Google. If you're looking for a thread on MGoBlog, you'd type something like "site:mgoblog.com shirtless basketball players for friend" without the quotes.

I have always wanted to ask this question, and have with no real answers.  Until now!  Cheers to you!

Personally I like vBulletin.  Each post seems more organized and easier to follow.
