Meta: Olympics & MGoBoard (Everything Sochi open thread)

Submitted by justingoblue on

Hey all,

With the Olympics upon us we wanted to remind everyone of the "no spoilers rule" for delayed telecast events. During the London games there were a couple spoilers posted; some people went ballistic and others had their event...spoiled. With that in mind, here is your friendly reminder: If it's going to be on in primetime don't post a thread with the results in the title. Your MGoBrethren will ostracize you and it will be the last thread you will start for a while. Open threads are fair game to post spoilers, so stay out of those if you're looking to be surprised. If someone wants to put a no-spoilers disclaimer on their OP that will be respected.

One other note, please stay away from the really political aspects of these games. This isn't meant to deter anyone from chuckling in the direction of interesting toilet facilities or noting that corruption exists in large, international sporting bodies, but MGoBoard isn't the place for a nuanced discussion on Russian public policy, human rights record, ect..

Mark McMorris has a broken rib; and he's still out there throwing triple-corks on that course.  No other riders have backed out.  Shoot; the women are having NO trouble sending it on the exact same course.

You are partially right though; snowboarding as a whole doesn't need much reason to hate on Shaun.  But that's very much of his own doing.  It's part jealousy; but even more-so the fact that Shaun is all about Shaun.  The roots of snowboarding are anti-establishment, punk rock, and I don't give a F@#K.  Also being stoked for your fellow rider when he lands something sick.  Shaunis ultra-competitive; has a chewing gum flavor and something called "Shaun White Enterprises".

I respect the hell out of the dude's riding.  But I can't say he represents snowboarding as I know it what-soever.

Feb 13th, 4:30 am wake up call for the USA hockey game here on the West Coast. At least I will be able to lay in bed before work and watch a full game, pretty pumped up about that.

Front page this. Otherwise, people will use ignorance as an excuse.

of course, they still will, and id probably still understand, but it'll be an excuse that is LESS utilized.

Does anyone know how to navigate to NBC's online coverage of events without clicking through pages of spoilers?

Two years ago you could get to live coverage, and replays of the live coverage, of events through the calendar page. This year the calendar page links to results only, not coverage or replays. (The page is also broken, but never mind that....)

The "watch video" page has at least some coverage mixed in with previews, and reviews chock full of spoilers (not just the videos themselves, but the headers). You can get to coverage through the page for each sport, but then you've seen the headline result before you find the video. Sometimes the result is in the link to the video itself and it's simply impossible to miss.

I feel like I must be missing something--there has to be another way to get to the videos. Or maybe it's just NBC being NBC.

I'm hoping my thread on Sochi got nuked because of some of the more political comments about Russia near the end and not because I made fun of the piss-poor job they've done preparing for the athletes & fans.

Mocking the lack of preparation (like their claiming they ran out of pillows due to the unexpected arrival of athletes in the Olympic Village one day before the games begin) shouldnt be off-limits IMO no matter what country is botching the effort.

That might be a sign of  a very poorly attended Olympics, or it might be a reflection of the level of Russian interest in SlopeStyle.

If they don't pack the house for hockey or figure skating, or if nobody shows up at the biathlon, we'll know. Until then, this isn't news.

Serious question for the snowboarders. Why do the men's tricks (the aerials, and less so the going on and off rails) appear to be more complex than the women?

It would seem that with their smaller bodies women would be better able to perform complex tricks than men?

Is it an issue of many more men in the sport putting in more time? Is it a strength thing? Am I just crazy?

Seems that way in most physical sports you can look at. Men were selected to be athletic traditionally because of the work they would have to do. If you ever compare men's floor exercise to women's you see the same thing.

There are some girls that go huge though Kelly Clark and Jaime Anderson both throw down.
