META: Does MGoBlog have too much content for its format?

Submitted by BostonWolverine on

Hey all, I was just curious to see what your take on this was. I really like a lot of the content on the site, but I don't necessarily read ALL of it.

Today, there have been 6 posts, and I flat-out missed the Borges presser - which is one of the things I really like to read. Sure, this can be solved by scrolling down, but if I normally just peek at the page on a break, it's harder to see what's there. For example, there were 3 articles posted between my visits today, and I just didn't realize it.

The site's gotten to a point that there's a ton of great content coming in from a number of different sources. This is a good thing, but I feel like the format is not giving readers the time to digest the pieces before another one comes along.

I love the site, and I want to see it continue to diversify and expand, but this is just a concern I had.

Read the thread. I don't want less content.

"There's a ton of great content...this is a good thing." I said that.

I also said, "I love the site, and I want to see it continue to diversify and expand."

I'm saying I want a slightly more-efficient way to access the lot of great content.

Don't even bother.  I know Seth and Bryan got the message and that's what you needed.  Anytime anyone writes anything someone is going to take one piece and blast off with it.  Its a shame really - I (and probably Seth, etc.) wasted 5 minutes sifting through all the nonsense looking for interesting ideas, of which there were several in this thread.  Thanks for the post.

the mobile app is great to organize posts and provides perfect reading material for you know what.  Just make sure you dont take too long and read every post otherwise people start to wonder

OT, but anyone want a steam key for FTL: Faster Than Light? It's one of my all time favorite games, and I got an extra key from the humble bundle that I don't need.

Just make sure that you reply to this comment once you claim it, so someone else doesn't get their hopes up. And enjoy!

there are times i wish the layout was different.   Sometimes there will be topics on the MgoBoard on the right but dont show up when you click on the MGOBOARD tab on the top.

The objective answer is yes. If you have 6 new articles in a day and the front page only shows the 5 most recent articles, you have a formatting issue.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is much that can be done without a significant change the to site. When Brian said earlier in the summer that he was working on massive changes to the site, I honestly thought that meant he was going to move away from Drupal.

In my opinion, I'd like to see a front page that has categories that you can click into. Something like Football, Football Recruiting, Basketball, Everything else. The front page then becomes a summary of the newest articles in each of those categories and the newest threads on the board. I think something like the front page of EDSBS would be very good for this site. Then have a setting that allows people to default to the front page, a specific category, the board, or all content (similar to the current format) when they arrive. Similarly, you could offer to only show articles in certain (more specific) categories so that the front page only displays content that people want to read. Functionally, this will put much less stress on the servers as only the content that people want to see is actually loaded when they arrive.

I also think that, visually, this site could do well with a facelift. The site just seems to have become a hodge podge of plugins for Drupal that don't work well together and don't look good with each other. I think the die-hard fans are going to come here no matter what, but trying to attract people like my dad (who, despite my warnings, gets his Michigan info from BR) is futile if the site doesn't look good and is buggy.

None of this is meant as a sleight, so I'm hoping it's not taken that way. This is just my attempt at constructive criticism.

People complain when it's the offseason and the content is light.  People complain when we have too much content.  Is it really that hard for you to scroll down to see if you missed anything?  Has the world really became THAT lazy?

No, just add Mgoblog to an RSS reader like Feedly and you won't miss anything. I usually open a tab to read from the actual site, but I always have the feedly app open in Chrome for all my interwebz reading.

You can add all the other Michigan blogs you follow, too.

EDIT: Haha looks like I should've read all the comments first.

I don't really mind making my browser work overtime, and I actually prefer not to click to individual entries unless I'm pretty bored and want to read comments. SO, I would prefer if there were twice as many stories per page on the front page, and if there were no "JUMP"... ever.

I may be an odd cookie in this regard.

Also, I wish the widgets in the sidebar worked. (Paging through recent MGoBoard posts, specifically.)

Interesting.  The way I use the site is through a bookmark of this page:  http://mgoblog.com/tracker.  It is nice in that it shows basically every currently active topic.  Just looking at the main mgoblog page, I can understand your point about only seeing one story/post at a time.  I definitely prefer the recent posts view that just shows the title of each topic.

I agree that there is a bit of an issue with the quantity of content and how to best manage it all.

My thought is for some sort of personalization (dashboard?) that would show a listing of "unread" things, things that you've commented on that have replies, etc.

Front page content is easy to page through to get to the last thing you've read.  Diaries don't seem to be an issue.  Cycling to the second page of message posts sometimes doesn't work as has been discussed.  But, that's not a big deal as half of them are dumb.  (I kid.  Sort of.)

Please, keep the content coming. But it is true that things get lost. Especially on the forum sidebar:  when there are many threads, some relevant ones disappear quickly. I think there could be a different way to present stuff, at least during the season. But all in all, this is a low priority change. I'd rather see you work on points, upvotes, putting up recruiting lists under the "important stuff" tab, both for 2014 & 2015. Lots of stuff to do to keep you busy!!

Bottom line:  there can never be too much content!!! But maybe formatting can be adjusted some.

Yes, there is too much content for the format. One of the things I like about Blogger is that it keeps a running list of the month's posts on the sidebar. MGoBlog probably shouldn't go that far, but if it kept a running list of, say, the last 10 front page posts, I think that would help. Scrolling is kind of annoying, and so is clicking to page two to see if you missed anything.

I also use the iPhone app sometimes if I haven't read the front page in a while, just to see how many posts I have yet to read.

Does anyone else hate the jump because they have a completely obsolete computer and it takes too long to keep jumping to the rest of the post? Oh...it must just be me.

in the spirit of constructive criticism; the site design blows.

I understand ads are a current necessity, but the recent articles could be visually organized better, the links and features could have more focus, etc.  It honestly looks like something out of the early 00's  (glowing maize text, really?).  This doesn't really have any bearing on the fantastic content, or lately the enormous amount of fantastic content other than highlighting the fact that the current design + large content volume = fail.

This whole discussion is idiotic. Mgoblog is far and away the best coverage of Michigan, and it's completely free. Until its paywall blocked, kindly STFU.

You're probably also the kind of person who uses a GPS instead of a good old map n compass! Do you expect the world to be spoon-fed to you? Does mama clean behind your ears for ya, boy? I tell ya this, nothing worthwhile is easy. The easier it's made for you -- the worse it is for you! MGoBlog makes you dig if you want content -- god bless it. Sorts the real Americans from the rabble. I say, if any change is made it should be towards even greater difficulty of acquiring content! And, whatever happened to text-based formats? Those were the days.

I am glad someone put up a thread about this. Last week or two coming on here to check out the content has been just too much to digest in a day. Sometimes I don't have time to read but then I don't want to feel like I have to spend an hour reading the 8 posts (plus comments) that I missed after not checkin the site for 30 hours. I don't want to miss anything but I also enjoy the experience of reading the articles/comments that way.

Its nice to see plenty of content but I am of the opinion that sometimes less is more.

As a long time lurker on MGoBlog, I finally got an account for football season. I tried to comment on this thread on the iPhone app, and I'm pretty sure I hit post. It didn't seem to go through, so I was wondering if this was a problem for anyone else. In things related to the topic, I usually look at the blog on my phone and have no problem with finding content.

Maybe it's been mentioned but I won't go through 3 pages of comments to check, but it'd be nice if there was a little a sidebar or something on the main page that just showed the titles of what's been posted, and it'd be good to include when it was posted (e.g., 2 hours ago). It'd be just like the mgoblog app I have. When it opens, it's just the titles and how long ago they were posted, so it's easy to see what I have and haven't checked yet. It wouldn't take up much space at all on the main page.

EDIT: Of course the comment right above mine said the same thing but in about 5 words lol

Hey man, if you're going to put work and responsibility ahead of keeping up with the goings on around here....well I just don't what to tell you.

Get your priorities straight.
