meta: Beavermonkeys must die

Submitted by Brian on June 24th, 2011 at 3:31 PM

Tim quoted one of Allen Trieu's scouting reports on new grayshirt commit Jeremy Clark in his recent "Hello" post. This spawned the usual thread on GBW about "stealer monkeys" and the like with some accusations from Tom Beaver himself.

To clarify the policy we have here:

1. We don't play the "I heard it from somewhere" kabuki dance found at Rivals/Scout etc. where board members repeat the info they got from another site without sourcing it because sourcing it would get it deleted. Information is going to move either way even if you put up protests-too-much barriers against it.

Instead, someone posting information from another site is expected to provide a source and a link. Same effect except the right people get credit.

2. We do try to leave premium content premium. Usually quotes from premium articles reproduced here are months old; Clark's sudden rise and commit was an unusual case. They are always small sections of a much larger whole and fall under fair use. We acknowledge that the premium sites should not have their paywall strip-mined for all available info and will delete significant C&Ps of articles.

3. Anyone who would believe TomVH is not getting his own information is willfully ignorant at this point. Beaver:

that's my beef with them among others. THV recently dropped his sub here, so he isnt even paying for it, he's 'borrowing' some else's moniker even.

It's one thing to take info, or rumors, and then independently go confirm it and then report it ... we do that too ... to me that's part of the biz - tips come in from everywhere ... we confirm everything we report, else call it a rumor

But to blatantly steal, and that's it ...  just-plain wrong ... that's not taking a tip and then doing your own work to confirm it and then report it ... big difference - "ethics"

This comes less than a week after TomVH spanked Scout's ass red on Kyle Kalis's visit. "Ethics" do not include telling your cultists that the other, much more grammatical cult is stealing all your chants when it's bloody obvious their chants predate yours. As literally anyone with a fifth-grade grasp of English knows, Tom's information is his own. He has predicted or broken dozens of commitments, interviewed even more prospects than that, and... oh, hell, what's the point? If you need to be convinced of this you can't be convinced of it because you can't percieve time. You are having a very trippy life.

I was laughing hysterically at the comments in that thread. I think most of the posters see Beaver as a god. No need to justify yourself Brian. We all know you guys have ethics and integrity.

Real question though...Will we be told when to unbuckle because some people have been complaining of chafing...

I appreciate and agree with this post.  Sorry that your "time-off" had to be spent on Scout's bitterness rather than some joyful commitment news.  That said, will you be "buckled up" for the reception?

Also, congratulations again!!!

What the heck are you doing defending the galaxy at a time like this??  Shouldn't you be on the phone arguing with Men's Warehouse or helping your future in-laws line up the table-setting name cards in the foyer of the reception hall right about now?

Too much agitation can spread to the fingers, encouraging slip of the cuticle clipper, possibly requiring resizing of the ring to fit over the bandaid.

Appreciate the care, now relax and have a splendid weekend.

I think that they have to write it that way because Scout automatically turns "TomVH" into asterisks (because they block out the names of other media sources, thus why they refer to Rivals as "TOS").  Which is actually really funny, because that means for all that they bash Tom and say he gets all his info from them, someone still considers him a credible enough resource to be considered an "alternative media source".

First time poster.

I love this site and TomVH's info. I hit F5 on this site over 100 times a day.

I think TomVH gets all info by talking to kids himself. And I don't agree with Beaver's accusation towards TomVH.

However, Tim's post copying scout's paid article is WRONG. I think Scout.com has every right to be upset about this. I hope it's oversight. I'd agree it's unethical if it's intentional.

Just my 2 cents.

It's one thing if a site is straight ripping everything from a premium one. But the authors and mods are pretty careful about not making a practice of it and most of the posters recognize that you can't just pull things at will.

Now is it really worth Scout getting their panties in a bunch over one paragraph that was properly cited to Scout? Not really. And as Brian said, the implication that most of Tom's info is pulled from Scout is incomprehensibly stupid.

I still think it's wrong to copy paid artcle. I agree that authors and mods are careful not to making a practice. But not doing the wrong thing often doesn't make doing the wrong thing once right.

I don' think Beaver was trying to make this a big deal. It was another subscriber asking it and then he answered. The post was not pinned or anything. You really need to look to find it. In comparison, it seems that Brian was trying to make it a scene. We all know TomVH has his own source. Just state that is enough. There is no point attacking others based on their typos on a blackberry message. This is quite disappointing.

First of all: lay off Brian on making 'a scene.'  He's getting married.  I'm freaking out just thinking about that, and I don't even know Brian.

As far as copying is concerned, by keeping the quote short, attributing it to the correct source and then linking to where one could potentially pay money for the remainder of the article, Tim has essentially advertised their site for them.  If Tim had stolen the article wholesale and then plopped it down on the front page, I could agree with you.  He didn't, so I don't.

Also, I know you are a first time poster, but you'll have to get used to people attacking one another for grammar.  It's just the nature of this particular blog.

Dear Tom Beaver, at least twice in the last 12 months you have stolen premium content from Rivals.

1) Stealing and reprinting Jerry Hanlon's letter to the team on the eve of the '10 season.  A letter he shared with John Borton of The Wolverine, who then shared it with the premium message board.

2) Stealing and reprinting an exclusive interview between David Brandon and the Rivals staff.

In both situations you were immediately challenged, and immediately took the content down.

Pot, kettle, black, etc.

But beavers and monkeys are pleasure friends.  You'll know what I'm talking about when you're officially married.

I, For one, welcome our new hybrid beast overlords.

Congrats on the nuptials. You do the wedding thing. We'll hold down the fort. Wait... not The Fort. Shit, I didn't mean to steal the name of another site. Beaver forgive me...
