META - Ace's GoFundMe

Submitted by Shop Smart Sho… on October 10th, 2018 at 4:39 PM

If it's possible, can one of the writers pin a tile to the top of the page that takes people directly to the GoFundMe? People are often lazy, so making it as easy as possible to get there seems like a good idea.

Also, if you're reading this and haven't donated, please consider doing so. I imagine everyone here has enjoyed Ace's work in the past, so now seems like a good time to give back.

How about refocusing contributions from a 20 yr old fatigued person ($80k) to a terminally ill Larry Prout GoFundMe ($10k).

I recommend after your visit to Bolivia that you not return to this blog.

Instead, find one of many message boards where you can remain anonymous, unconnected and uncaring towards those who produce and participate in its content.

I should think we will all be much happier for it.

This whole thing is weird to me. We have plenty of people in this mgoblog community who are facing health or other personal hardships. Not sure why I have never seen anyone else ask for money. I have no problem with Brian allowing this to take place so long as anyone else who posts a personal gofundme is allowed to remain on the site. People should be allowed to spend their money in anyway they please. So while I will not be donating any money, I applaud the people who do. I will admit it turned me off a little when Ace said he won't get a roommate (to save money) because it would make him more uncomfortable. All that being said I do pray for Ace and hope he recovers, and I pray for all mgobloggers who may be facing tough times.

Ace is not random but neither are you. If Wolverine Devotee were to become ill would he be allowed to ask the community for money ? I hope the answer is yes. Keep in mind we already have paid Ace (and Brian and other writers) money by using this site. Honestly i'm confused how I even feel about this. I truly feel bad for Ace and sincerely wish him the best, but I just don't know how others asking for money with a sad story attached would be received.

I mean at the end of the day, it's basically like the no politics rule. To my recollection, random GoFundMe's have often been moderated off the board. But it's Brian's site, so if there is a cause he thinks should be promoted, it's fully in his "right" to selectively do so.

I know a lot of people don't love that it feels like a double standard, but I personally have no issue with it.

As an aside, I also think that some people (like chad) who have an issue with this whole situation probably wouldn't give a moment's pause had Ace gotten in a serious car accident or something.

Just shut up and stop it. The members don't work for The site, they don't produce content like ace does so the rules are different for him. Who cares and what is this idea that anyone with an issue that might need money needs to be treated the same as an employee? You're awfully obnoxious from time to time on here.

Why do people feel the need to make incredibly stupid points like this. Ace is a fixture of this company and he’s facing hardship. Yes there are some board members who are also well-known, but they’ve not worked intimately with the rest of the team for years.

Don’t overthink it.

We have had other people ask for money around here and (usually) it doesn't get policed too heavily; I remember giving something like $25 to a person whose family suffered in a car accident or some such thing.

I find it weird that people have an issue with Ace's situation and Brian's decision, I guess, let a friend use the site he previously worked at to ask for help through a trying time.  There is this weird ownership fallacy here by users that because they visit this place, they deserve a right to be treated as a "member" of the larger organization.  And there is absolutely no logical basis for this; if you (and I'm speaking in the royal sense) don't like what's going on here, then you can go elsewhere.  The whole "we pay your salary" argument is bullshit, unless you think you should be able to post anything you want in the comments section of NYTimes because you pay $8/mo or whatever for a subscription.

I have written what I will conservatively say is 50k words in the various diaries, about 1k of which I'd consider "passably interesting and informative."  I do not for one second presuppose I am anything but a passive visitor to the greater MGoBlog community, and the only "ownership" stake I feel is because I like what this site produces and how it (largely) tries to refrain from the worst parts of sports fandom.

You don't need to give money to Ace (or any other cause here) if you don't feel it is relevant to you, and I wouldn't blame you if you did.  But it's not really our place to tell Brian how to run his site or what rules he applies to his friends that may not apply to randos.

Have to respectfully disagree. There was a period in the summer where the content on this site was solely mgoboard posts. Without users this site essentially is only readable in football and basketball season. Without users I would visit this site 2-3 times per week, not the 15 times I do now. It is nice to know 90% of relevant UofM sports information will be posted here. This blog exists because of the users. UMBIG11 contributes more to this place than anyone besides Brian. Even WD has contributed a ton (clothing posts aside).

I guess I disagree with the premise that this site "exists because of the users."  It exists because Brian and the staff produce great content.  It's a disservice to act like Neck Sharpies, FFFF, True Blue Originals, recruiting roundups, etc. aren't important and relevant content to a lot of people.  If you want a place where just randos talk about Michigan football, go to https://www.reddit.com/r/michiganwolverines.

Also, YMMV with the quality of board posts, but a lot of it is just fluff or half-thoughts.  Saying that UMBig11 contributes a bunch to this site puts way more value on corroborating rumors than I would, but if that's what you value then that's your truth, I guess.  But you and I don't own this site, and if we disappeared tomorrow nobody would care and the site would be fine, and this paternalistic bs about how Brian needs to listen to his users (read: people who don't like something) ignores the number of people who DO like what he does and GREATLY overstates anyone's value.  The users don't own this site, and that seems to be hard for some people to accept.

Get well man.

Hope my contribution helps.

A thought: Now that the need/goal has been doubled, will you cap it? Or perhaps steer the excess to another with less connections?

God Bless.

Congrats on reaching your goal Ace. Just wondering if you might not donate the additional money to Larry Prout or to a research grant (eg the CFS study in Norway)? For Larry, I believe he’s on surgery #70 or something ridiculous like that.

No politics, unless it's the right politics.  No GoFundMe links unless that person has the right politics.  This is Michigan fergodsakes!

I have always believed in the power of many.  look how easy it was to make Ace's life a little bit better or a little easier for the next year or so.

I never see an issue with go fund me links if it is for a good reason.  We all share a common bond and yet most of us will never meet.  If one of us has a health issue, or dire need, why not be able to have us all throw in a few bucks.  there are thousands of us, and just a little bit can help so much.
