Meta: Accessing the site on mobile (Android 6.0)

Submitted by skitchbeatz on

For us bleeding edge tech types, the mgoblog app does not function on the recently released (today) Android 6.0. What do you use to access the site for better readability on a mobile device?

If the web site was optimized for mobile it would instantly work for both Android and iOS without having to maintain separate apps for both. Plus it would work fine on Windows Phone as well, so we wouldn't have to deal with all five Windows Phone users complaining about getting left out.

The app hasn't had an update since April 5, 2013. The github repo (https://github.com/SeanPONeil/MGoBlog) has commits from spring 2015, though.

I don't really know what the status of the project is, or if Brian and Seth have any interest in an app refresh, but it really is due. With my full-time gig, I don't think I could do a refresh of the application quickly. If there were other MGoAndroid developers out there, I would be interested in a collaborative effort.

Thoughts?

The commits are from Sean and myself getting the app working with Android Studio and gradle so that we can do some further dev work on it, but we haven't done anything yet. I'll try and fire it up sometime this week to see if getting it working on 6.0 is a quick fix or not.

The android app was done by a friend as a class project for an engineering class when I was in undergrad. I'm figuring he got a job and didn't want to commit the time.

similar to the one provided to Maize N Brew by SB Nation, or something like what Eleven Warriors uses (not sure if that's through an SB Nation-like affiliation or if they just adapted it from something on the WordPress themes marketplace).

I use MGoBlog HD on iPhone and iPad and it works pretty good, but I miss the upvotes, avatars and MGoPoints displays. It's nice and clean, but TOO clean.

I know it takes a ton of work to migrate a site like this especially with all these user accounts, and I like that MGoBlog is independent of 24/7 or SB Nation, so it doesn't bother me too much. The content is stil the best.

But eventually the site needs a mobile upgrade to something closer to what the other sports fan sites are doing. For now, it's an awesome classic old sports bar that the die hard regulars will never abandon no matter what shiny fancy places go up next door, but eventually if they want to stay in business they'll need to expand a bit, put in a few more flat screens, build a deck ... ok where was I going with this?

Yes, please. I've been using the Marshmallow developer previews for the last few months, and it's been rough using the browser to access everything. The one advantage is that it tracks the comments you've already read when you hop on a computer. So, if that could be integrated into the app, that would be great.
