Men's Soccer Upsets #12 NU

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on
Took double overtime, but the men defeated Northwestern by a score of 1-0. After two blocked shots, Matt Schmitt got a rebound off the defender to the goal post and then right to him. Right spot at the right time to put it in the net. Michigan now has 6 points in conference play (2 wins for 3 pts a piece). That's good for a 3 way tie for 5th (also known as last place) in the BigTen. One regular season game is left on Saturday at Ohio State. I'm not sure on the BigTen tournament set up, but I have to imagine that the top 6 teams (out of 7) make the tournament with the top two having a bye. Michigan needs to win at Ohio State and have either Michigan State or Indiana to lose this weekend to make the tournament, if that is the case. Michigan lost head to head against both of those teams, and we're tied with them in the standing.

All 7 teams make the tournament. Only the number 1 seed gets a bye. First round: 5v4 6v3 7v2 #1 has bye. winner of 5v4 plays 1, winner of 6v3 plays winner of 7v2

This is based purely on last years results, but it looks like they set it up with the 1 seed getting a bye, and 2-7, 3-6, 4-5 matchups on the first day of the tourney to get to a 4-team semifinal. EDIT: wow i was late on that. my bad

Big win and potentially a momentum shifter going into the post season. Ohio St may be playing for an outright Big Ten championship on Saturday if Penn State drops points at Indiana on Friday night.
