Men's hoops finishes #2 in final coaches poll

Submitted by Real Tackles Wear 77 on

No, the national runner up does not automatically get the #2 spot in the poll each year, so it's great to see us finish the season ranked so high. Another indicator of the respect Beilein commands from his peers. I don't think the AP poll comes out after the season, so we will end up #7 on that. Both will significantly help us in the Director's Cup as it weights several revenue sports more heavily.

AFAIK, we have only been ranked #1 for one week in Beilein's tenure (in 12-13). Congrats to the maize and blue on a great season!

Also of note:

UVA #5, Loyola #7, Purdue #9, MSU #11, OSU #21

For at least the next few years - they are in a rotation of five freshmen one and done starting lineup. I am fascinated to see how that is going to work.

My guess is that most years this will devolve into 5 man hero ball (these guys are playing as much for NBA scouts as for their school) with an occasional catch lightning in the bottle where the team gels and makes a championship run.

Given the performance last night, I honestly think we should have dropped out of the top 25. And given all the challenges and costs in running a D1 basketball program, maybe we should seriously consider dropping down to 1-AA?

When I see that FauxMo's obviously tongue-in-cheek post is taken literally by readers and downvoted, it reminds me of the Masked Marauders LP.  Rolling Stone did a review of an album entitled The Masked Marauders back in 1969.  It claimed to be a double album featuring a supergroup of Dylan, Beatles, Stones, etc.  Any reader with half a brain could figure out that it was totally fictitious and not meant to be taken literally. (think The Onion)

However, of course, many readers did think it was real and commented on it as such.  This happens on this board all the time.  It amazes me how many people lack the ability to discern sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek comments.  Everything is taken so seriously and so literally.

I upvoted FauxMo.  I love how he tweaks the non-critical readers in this community.  It is all in fun and so enjoyable.

People have a hard time discerning tone in writing.  "According to recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, I've only a 50-50 chance of ascertaining the tone of any e-mail message. The study also shows that people think they've correctly interpreted the tone of e-mails they receive 90 percent of the time."

Also, people just skim or don't read the whole thing.  I instinctively wanted to downvote him until I kept reading.

Pretty amazing.

All the people saying Michigan didn't deserve to be in the title game can suck it

We beat a ton of great teams in a row, on the road  and were playing some damn good basketball. And even in our off games we were still finding ways to win, until running into the buzzsaw that is Nova

I mean that’s us in football so I wouldn’t talk crap. MSU wasn’t that bad this season should still be in the top 15. Just great that we’re number 2 HAIL!
