MBB Recruiting: Beilein likely to visit S. Dakota grad transfer Matt Mooney

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Matt Mooney, a 6'3" guard from S Dakota, is seriously considering Michigan per 247. Sounds like Beilein has a tentative visit in place. He averaged 18.7 ppg, 4 reb, 3 ast, and 2 steals a game last year, and scored 1,271 points in 2 years there.

Looks like he was at Air Force for a year, then spent two years at S Dakota, and will now transfer again.

This could just be Beilein covering his bases, but we're already oversigned by 1 so a transfer like this would require at least 2 guys to leave. My bet is that Mo goes, and one of the younger guys at the 1-3 spots transfers.

He fits the profile of a Beilien transfer.  Been in the program a couple years and hasn't seen much playing time.  Has a younger player (Poole) who passed him on the depth chart.

BUT, he did play in 26 games last year including a couple minutes in games down the stretch.  Plus, he does have a path to playing time.  There's nobody to backup Poole on the roster right now.  I would think given his minutes this year, he would feel confident in holding off Nunez.  Could see up to 10-15 min/game depending on how frequently Poole ends up in Beilein's doghouse.

Those two would make the most sense imo. Also would much rather take another 2019 guy rather than take a grad trasnfer after how Jaaron Simmons performed. Beilein's system doesn't seem conducive to grad transfers

He hit one three and played like 8 minutes.

I like the kid's potential, but if other schools are using that for recruiting, they got problems. If he wanted to transfer, he could find his way to a high level mid major or maybe get in the top 8 rotation of a power school. Beyond that, he hasn't really done much of note yet.

A quick Google search says players must submit for entry to draft by April 22 and submit name for consideration by NBA advisory committe is April 13.

The NCAA requires a player to remove his name by May 30th at 11:59pm, but the NBA deadline to remove a name from the draft is June 11.

Hopefully, if Mo or Matthews don't throw their names in by then they won't jump in, but that is just wishful thinking.

We got a long more time to hear about this.

No team goes 13 deep.   Most teams including UM typically go 8 or 9 at most deep.  They might as well red-shirt 2 or 3 players per year if injuries and talent permit.

But which 2 or 3 players would you have redshirted this season? There may only be 8 or 9 players in the regular rotation, but it takes some time to sort that out and there are roles for more players,

Who was Beilein's last non-injury redshirt who wasn't a 5?  I can't think of any, but I'm probably missing someone.

I would be absolutely shocked if Wagner came back for his senior year. I would be equally disappointed if Matthews signed with an agent (go ahead and test the waters but please come back).

Beilein has been burned by attrition too much in the past few years not to be out there looking at all manner of transfers and recruits.

Not going to put much stock into this report at this time. The fact the author had to use "tentatively" in quotations about a possible meeting with Beilein adds a lot of uncertainty about Michigan's actual interest.

Considering the report is coming from the transfer prospect, it may be a case where he may want to be recruited by Michigan.

It’s frowned upon to speculate specific names of guys who could transfer or be given a firm handshake, but this thread is just full of names of guys people think will leave.. just let the dust settle before kicking guys off the team.

The "Go Pro?" decision matrix for Wagner says he probably should go even if he isn't a first rounder.   At this point, the odds of him making some sort of major leap in his game before next season are minor.  His profile is about as high as it is ever going to be.  If he isn't first round now, he probably will never be first round.  So he's probably better off just getting drafted on a roster while his profile is high and fighting for a spot.  Another year at Michigan most likely isn't going to move him up, unless some lightbulb really went on and he suddenly started averaging 20 and 10.

Matthews I think should stay, because he has the opportunity to really improve his shooting.  And if he could add a decent shot to his slashing abilities and defense, he becomes a much more valuable player who might even get into the first round.

Anyway, my take is worthless, but that's how I see it.

Fans always look at it from a money or draft spot angle, because that is what it is.  It's a business decision.

Kids who have "other priorities" actually think they are doing something that will help their draft stock, or at least won't hurt it, and are spinning it.   Almost no kid does something intentionally to hurt their draft stock.  They all think that somehow, whatever decision they are making, will work out for them when the draft rolls around.

For these kids, the NBA draft is a once-in-a-lifetime lottery ticket, and they SHOULD be maximizing their potential in it.  What I don't get is people who look down on them for it.

Why is everyone so sure someone is transferring? Coach B clearly has 2 guys mulling over their NBA futures and does not want to be left with an open scholarship so he’s kicking the tires on a grad transfer. I predict both Matthews and Mo will go to the combine. Mo I think will go pro, Matthews will come back, and this grad transfer will be forgotten about by June.

When you look at who we have coming back, we do need more shooters.   Right now, if Mo goes,  the only returning players who are shooters are Poole and Livers, and Livers vanished for the last 1/3 of the season.

Yeah, his volume was low, mostly because he stopped shooting from mid February on.  He went 1-12 from 3 from Feb 18 to the end of the season.    Before that he was  20-46 (43.5%) from 3.   You don't generally shoot 43% over 50 3's by accident.

So, he'll have to significantly increase his volume and still shoot in the high 30%'s to be a shooter next year, but I think it will happen.

Mo would come back to lead the Wolverines  to that elusive National Championship...John Belien DESERVES one...

Im rewatching all the Big and NCAA games..was gone for 6 weeks and watched them all while on the road...on a good note Teske sure played well in that Big Ten Title game against Purdue

This sounds highly unconfirmed at the moment. With all the freshmen signed and no obvious roster spot I think this is at worst just Beilein kicking the tires on an emergency plan. Combine the lack of a roster spot, this kid being a decent but not great shooter and the recent struggles of Simmons fitting in the rotation despite a lot more success at a higher level and I don't think anything comes of this.

I think Mo is gone, I think Charles might submit his name but think he will stay (even if GR3 is an interesting comparison), I think Davis and Brooks stay to try and beat the freshmen for PT, and I think Watson is your wildcard. If he is on track to graduate early he might look to find a small school with playing time.

I dont mean to be 'that guy' but I actually attend USD and know Matt pretty well. He has a lot of solid programs coming after him right now, and it's a pretty neat dream come true for him. I won't drag on needlessly, but if anybody has any questions about him, let me know. Awesome guy.
