I can't wait until Mattison has new things to talk about.

Any interview you hear of him right now includes how great it is to be at Michigan (although every coach who has ever been hired ever says that), how the defense needs to learn fundamentals, and that statistics or film from last year is something he doesn't pay attention to.

I did find it interesting how he says he likes teaching the college kids more than the defensive scheming he does in the pros.

Would have been announced already.

Of all the things that made me want to pull the shirt over the head of devout RR haters and pummel them hockey-style, their whining about Michigan Replay tops the list.

Fundamentals have been the basis for Michigan defenses (and all great defenses, really) for like forever. It is really only when you get away from them that you notice, but by then your defense isn't any good anymore. If Mattison succeeds then it'll simply seem like Michigan has returned to form. If the players on defense really are good athletes and smart players, I think we have a great chance for a non-incremental improvement. One thing that needs to be done, however is to get the old coaching out of their ears.

What a hire!  Football IQ off the charts.  Come on!  Former DC of the Ravens?  He saw first hand, up close and personal, how the best on the planet "master their craft"...the preparation, the professional approach, the work ethic...

Hmmm, if I'm a stud high school baller, where would I want to go to school?

Can't wait 'til this year but even more jacked about years 2-4 when they have time to really get their coaching philosophies deeply embedded in the program.

Thank you God!!!

45 days 'til the new M Defense opens up a fresh can v. WMU.

Great interview.  Thanks for posting it.  Mattison is a very well-spoken man.  I love his analytical mind and the way he breaks things down naturally.  I also enjoyed his comments on the differences between the NFL and college, in terms of what the players are focusing on.
