Mattison's No. 4 in recruiter power rankings

Submitted by East German Judge on

Det News story about an ESPN paywalled story saying that Greg is the nation's 4th best recruiter:

"Few recruiters are as savvy as Mattison, and that has paid off with a tremendous late-season recruiting push in the 2016 class," says ESPN Recruiting Nation's Jeremy Crabtree. "He started out solid with ESPN 300 prospects (DE) Ronald Johnson Jr. and (G) Ben Bredeson and four-star (DE) Carlo Kemp, but luring (DT Jordan) Elliott away from Big 12 and SEC recruiters was something truly special. Not many would have been able to pull that off, especially in the competitive Lone Star State recruiting battleground, but Mattison did. Now the Wolverines have an impact defensive tackle they've been coveting."

And the top ten rankings are as follows:

1. Tim Brewster, Florida State

2. Tee Martin, USC

3. Bradley Dale Peveto, LSU

4. Greg Mattison, Michigan

5. Chip Long, Arizona State

6. Corby Meekins, Houston

7. Harry Hiestand, Notre Dame

8. Kevin Sherrer, Georgia

9. Kendal Briles, Baylor

10. Kerry Coombs, Ohio State

Somehow the Buckeyes manage to land in the top three year after year with only the 10th best recruiter on their staff.

I guess we should consider ourselves lucky.  Imagine how good they'd be if they had really top shelf recruiters like us.

Many of the top ranked recruits have not yet committed, and that will shake up this board. I'll wager that you'll see a few changes after signing day, when a few of the big dog teams reel in the last of the 5 stars.

Hopefully, Mattison will add Gary and Bush, keeping him high on the list.

One of the things I think will be most missed about Mattison when he retires is his ability to do things on the recruiting trail that - if lists like this are indeed an indication - few others are able to do, at least with any regularity. In an era where Michigan has to stand in line to make its pitch like anyone else, to do what Mattison has in the way of getting talent to come to Ann Arbor is rather significant indeed.

Friend and college teammate of mine went to a Michigan recruiting camp a few years ago after the 8-5 season. Had nothing but great things to say about Mattison and called him a great dude. Also said Hoke was an idiot. Guess he was proven to be correct about both...
