Mary Sue ???

Submitted by TorontoBlue on

1)  Mary Sue drives down to Toledo with Bill Martin and approves hiring Rich Rodriguez to replace Lloyd Carr.

2)  Mary Sue hires Dave Brandon to replace Bill Martin as AD two years later.

3)  Mary Sue then approves her boy Dave Brandon's choice to fire Rich Rodriguez and replace him with Brady Hoke.

4)  Hoke is a bust and terminated.

That's a lot of decisions that all turned out wrong, and all were on her watch or have her fingerprints on them.  Is her legacy impacted?

As with all people of Management, you should be responsible for any descision that you have approval over. So yes she is responsible.

I believe that wheen it came to football she rubber stamped anything Brandon wanted.

Many managers, such as Hoke fall to the same fate when they are loyal to a fault.

MSC was an awful president, and her failures at umich athletics are just the tip of the iceberg.

Did UM increase our endowment, and run an excellent fundraising campaign?  Yes we did.  How much of that credit does our CFO at the time (Slottow) and our gift officers deserve?  Much of it.

Did she procure more funding from the state of Michigan?  No.  Funding was cut almost every year she was in charge (and procuring these funds are just as much her job as procuring donations, if not moreso considering we rely more on our president for interfacing with the government whereas we have a better support staff to work with the alumni network).

Did our academic reputation go up under MSC?  I would argue it stayed stagnant or went down.

Did we improve upon our medical center?  I would argue no.  Improvements heavily relied on spending the tobacco settlement money already procured by her predescessors.

Did we improve opur academic faculty?  We lost many critical research faculty that may prove to be Nobel candidates years from now (Dixon, Marletta, etc...).

Was she popular with the students?  Not nearly as much as her predescessor -- Bollinger.

Did she control tuition costs?  No.  Tuition went up almost every year she was here (and by a significant amount).

Did she bungle the investigation regarding child porn at Mott hospital?  Yes.  I am ashamed at how that was swept under the rug and dealt with.

Mary Sue was an awful president.  I am happy to see her gone.

So much wrong here.

Did she procure more funding from the state of Michigan? No

Firstly, you want to give the CFO credit for fundraising, but blame Coleman for this perceived failing. That's doubletalk.

Secondly, this isn't a failing. This is a success. We in Michigan want our universities to be less dependent on the state. Coleman actively worked to make the state's contribution drop because it's what we wanted and it's what's best for both the university and the state. The only failure here is yours.

Did our academic reputation go up under MSC? I would argue it stayed stagnant or went down

I would argue that you pulled this straight from your ass.

Did we improve upon our medical center? I would argue no

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Not only is this hilariously false, but then you go full non sequitur by pretending that the funding source for the improvements and renovations somehow invalidate them. The fuck is wrong with you?

Did we improve opur academic faculty? We lost many critical research faculty that may prove to be Nobel candidates years from now

Also pulled from your ass. What happens when they aren't? What happens when people we pulled in, whom you ignore, DO become Nobel candidates?

Apparently you haven't been to campus in a while...if ever. Mary Sue was pretty damn popular with the students, especially student organizations.

Tuition goes up under every university president of nearly every goddamn university, you dumbass.

The butthurt is strong in this one. What, did she kick your dog?

Lots of personal attacks, few facts or details cited proving that I "pulled it from my ass."  That's ok, I have a minute, so let's dance.

I don't credit the CFO for donations.  I do credit the CFO for increasing our endowment.  And yes, I fault her for not retaining him.

"Tuition goes up under every university president of nearly every goddamn university, you dumbass."  Are you aware of the numbers?  She raised tuition by 70%!!!!  US Dept of Ed Nat'l numbers are at 40% for the same period.  So she about doubled the increases that every other university instituted.

Moving UM into a private university model is not what "we" want, nor what all Michiganders want.  It might be what "you" desire, but some of us are proud of the fact that we attend a public university.  She balanced the budget on the backs of the students by increasing tuition and increasing out of state enrollment to offset her failure in procuring necessary state funding.  If you want to share blame with the legislature I would not argue that, but I certainly do not excuse her poor performance in this arena.

As much as I hate USN&WR....  research the numbers.  We are not even in the top 25 any more.  Med school, law school... both dropped.  B-school fluctuations have been a sore point... it is absolutely not an overall positive trend.

If you don't like my critique about losing faculty, please do explain why losing Dixon, Morrison, and Marletta was good for the university.  If you don't think their research was ground breaking, please do explain why.  List the tremendous faculty hires that have offset our losses in the last decade.  Explain who we pulled in who you believe is Nobel worthy.  I used actual instances (facts!) to support my concerns.  You referenced my asshole.

And regarding her popularity with students... now I see where you are coming from.  I have been on campus nearly every day for almost 20 years.  I'm not sure you know who Lee Bollinger even is.  She wasn't as popular as Lee, and some of us have been around long enough to have witnessed both administrations.

You sir, are an angry little man.  Seek help, and approach future posts with a little more information and a little less histrionics.
