Marcus McWilson to Nebraska

Submitted by Leaders And Best on February 27th, 2012 at 6:16 PM

2013 safety Marcus McWilson from Youngstown (OH) Cardinal Mooney committed to Nebraska today.  Top 20ish Ohio player (Rivals #142 player overall) that had didn't have a Michigan offer.  Still plenty of time to Signing Day but interesting that another top Ohio player leaves the state for now.  Urban Liar has adopted a completely different strategy from Tressel by neglecting top 250 talent from Ohio for other elite players nationally instead of locking up the home state.

Urbanb doesn't recruit guys out of the top 25 in the overall rankings. He just looks up those 25 every year and the other teams get his left overs. I am sorry this is a joke and I can't stand that article I read about him not wanting anyone lower than 150 ranking wise.

The knock on him at Florida was that he just recruited the top guys from the recruting services.  He didn't watch tape or do a lot of evaluation.  Just went blind by what the servies said.  While this got him lots of attention from the sites it didn't translate as well as if he were recruiting like UM.  It will cost him lots of OH recruits.  Maybe he just assumes he can get everyone he wants to flip later.  Don't think this method will work well at Ohio.  I also think the all flash no substance recruiting style draws the type of kid that is the same.

If you subtract Michigan from the Legends, there are a grand total of 3 four star recruits verballed to the division at the moment, one to MSU and two to Nebraska.  Hardly anything to worry about!

Verbally Committed 2013 Recruits as of 2/27/12 (per Rivals)

Legends:  Iowa (0), MSU (4; 1 Four Star, 3 Unranked), Northwestern (0), Nebraska (2; 2 Four Stars), Minnesota (1; 1 Unranked); Michigan (13; 11 Four Stars, 2 Unranked)

Leaders:  Illinois (0), Indiana (0), Ohio State (4; 1 Five Star, 3 Four Stars), Penn State (0), Purdue, Wisconsin (2; 2 Unranked).

B1G teams have a total of 26 committed recruits - 1 Five Star, 17 Four Stars, and 8 unranked (likely 3 stars eventually).  Michigan has 13/26 overall recruits and 11/17 Four Stars per Rivals.

0/4 services show us having offered him.  Not to say he isn't a good player, but our coaches sent off a lot of offers and it doesn't look like he had one.  Ohio has 19 players in the rivals top 250, OSU shouldn't even have room for all of the 4* talent in that state (scholarship reductions).

With 3 S in the previous class, only one graduating, and Thomas committed, we can afford to be very selective with safeties. Need for S is not very high; maybe if we miss out on the extremely elite guys and have the scholies down the road we might try to pick up another safety. If this was last year maybe he is already holding an offer at this time in the process.

Was Michigan looking for another safety?

Also, I hate Ohio but Urban seems to be doing just fine with recruiting, seeing as his class was higher ranked than Michigan's last year. And some people say Urban's just reflexively offering every kid with a Michigan offer, but others say he's not trying to defend his home state. It can't really be both, unless he's just pursuing the Ohio kids that have a Michigan offer.

I don't like the name Urban Liar very much, but I am more partial to the name Urban Legend. Perhaps both are beneath the dignity of Michigan men. Perhaps we should just call him "That coach at that school in Ohio" or something.

Did Urban really say he only wanted kids ranked 150 or better? Aren't coaches supposed to say that stars don't matter that much?

How about just calling him by his name -- Urban Meyer -- and leaving it at that.  There's considerable dignity in taking the high road.

Meyer is a good coach with a stellar record.  But he's not super-human.  I have strong confidence that Hoke and staff can run with him and OSU.  Neither team will dominate.  It's going to be a pitched battle year after year.  That's a good thing for Michigan, the Big 10 and college football.

I think we'll best them with literal running.  I have enormous confidence Michigan will have a great running attack in the future.  OSU has had their share of great running backs.  But so too has Michigan.  And the era of Michigan runners has been renewed.

Speaking metaphorically, I have equal confidence Michigan and OSU will match up and fight tong and hammer going forward.  The bloom on Meyer's OSU rose will soon fade, and it'll come back to the classic comparison of program values.  And on that score I honestly (and fervently) believe Michigan has the upper hand.

Hoke is selling something far more sublime than merely victories and a pathway to the NFL.  We'll have that as well, but something more as well -- honor, integrity, responsibility and character.  And as I say over and over again, that stuff matters to young men of character.

Give me a young man with a yearning for those values and coach them up, and they'll produce.  I don't care how many five-star DE's they capture.  Michigan will plow through 'em.  I honestly believe that.

I completely missed what you were getting at ... damn, normally I'm a bit better about such things.  I blame the vodka.

Re: a footrace between Hoke and Meyer ... I don't know if Meyer is a clear winner in that.  Did you see Dontari Poe?  Big guy can move it down the track.  Maybe Hoke is one of those fat guys that's deceptively fast.  Like a bear.  :-)

I think we'll take another safety.  I'm not sure where Tamani Carter ends up (could be safety, CB or WR), so we either took 1 or 0 safeties in 2011, Carvin and Vinopal left and MRob and Furman are unknown quantities despite two full years on campus so far.  And Kovacs graduates after this fall. :(

Additionally, although we signed three safeties in 2012, Jarrod Wilson is the only one with any recruiting hype to speak of (though he had a lot).  The safety position is certainly not all taken care of, so I think we should take one more safety in this class, but only shoot for the top guys, at least at first.

Let Hoke do Hoke and TCIO do TCIO. I love the way that we are recruiting, which is locking down a top class of OL to set up a big time back (hopefully Isaac-insane video, size, and speed) and get bigger at wideout, while getting ten times better with our depth at LB and other spots. I just love talking about Michigan football, and threads like this are just a big who cares, especially for someone who did not even have an offer.

Is a really solid player. Pellini will always have an 'in' at his alma mater...especially considering that he got them a free field turf surface at their practice facility...
