ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Doug Gnodtke has been named the executive associate director of athletics and chief of staff at the University of Michigan. The announcement was made by Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel.

Gnodtke, a two-time Michigan graduate, returns to Ann Arbor following nearly four years as the senior associate athletic director/chief financial officer and internal operations at the University of Connecticut. Gnodtke served as UConn's sports administrator in football and men's and women's ice hockey, and he oversaw the Huskies' equipment room operations and the department's apparel partnership.

Seems like a no brainer. Like Manuel, he went from Michigan as a student (x2), to the UM AD, Buffalo, UConn, and now back home.

I just wanna say...selling sponsorships of job titles is cheesy.  I know these people donate a zillion dollars to UM but isn't there something else that we could do for them?

I agree, but it's better than selling the names of our stadiums that are seen nationally. They only really use these titles in things the university releases that aren't that widespread. If that's worth millions of dollars to someone, hard to say no.

I can say nothing but good things about him.  After having season tix for football with him for three years and riding out to the Rose Bowl in 1997 on a bus with him, all I can say is that he loves Michigan sports.  Plus he worked with Warde in Buffalo and UConn.  I'm biased, but I know he's a great hire.

Actually, his title basically makes him the #2 in the athletics department...I'd say it's a big/relevant hire.

Far more than an assistant.

What's funny is people think the AD does and has a lot more influence than ADs actually have...instead, it's positions like this that impact much of what you and I care about.

If you think I'm lying. How do you think this guy became relevant?

ADs are often far too busy to make day-to-day decisions...they're fundraising, giving speeches and having lunches and dinners with donors aka fundraising. There are 3-4 others in the department that are truly making that thing go, with trust and approval from the AD.

This would be one of those positions. Hunter Lochmann also held one of those positions from an external standpoint.

Sorry for the rant, but it pisses me off when people make quips and have no clue what they're talking about.

that know him and can vouch for his love for Michigan.  Thanks for posting.  Based on the history, sounds like Gnodtke may be to Manuel what Drevno is to Harbaugh.
