M Uniforms -- Help Make a Diary

Submitted by Seth on
I'm going to be putting together a diary in the coming weeks in which MGoBlog readers will get to pick their favorite M team uniforms (varsity & club varsity). I need a little help from those involved in the athletic program, or who follow the down-ticket sports. If you'd like to be of assistance, I could use help with the following 1. Photo shout-out. If you got any good exemplary images of any team, send to misopogon at att dot net. 2. Thoughts on throwbacks: I want to include some of the more important throwbacks, since not every great M uniform is currently in use. Good idea/bad idea? Which are the most iconic that would warrant inclusion? 3. Swimming caps: I've seen the women wearing a cap with M's classic wings and stripes, but not the fellas. Anyone care to inform as to when/if our buoyant brethren and naiant1 sistren sport the wings rather than the block-M designs? 4. Peruse the list below and tell me if there are any unis (classic or modern) that have been omitted. m baseball blue m baseball maize m baseball white m baseball white alt pinstripes vest m basketball blue m basketball maize m basketball white w basketball maize w basketball white throwback diane deitz w basketball white w cheerleading maize w cheerleading white w cheerleading white throwback m cross country blue w cross country blue w field hockey blue vest w field hockey maize vest w field hockey maize shirt w field hockey white vest m football blue m football white m football white throwback m golf maize w golf maize w golf white m gymnastics blue w gymnastics blue m hockey blue m hockey blue throwback block m m hockey maize m hockey maize throwback script m hockey white alt m hockey white throwback m lacrosse maize m lacrosse white w lacrosse blue w lacrosse blue w lacrosse white w rowing blue m soccer blue m soccer white w soccer blue w soccer white w softball blue w softball white m&w swimming & diving blue m&w swimming & diving maize w swimming & diving blue winged w syncro skating blue w syncro swimming maize (actually it's red) m tennis blue m tennis maize w tennis blue w tennis maize m track & field blue w track & field blue w volleyball white w water polo blue m wrestling blue 1. M[ichigan] is [number] on[e] Means "beard hater." So-named for it is the vehicle by which I may pour forth my bitter anger against, and disappointment with, the people of Ann-tioch Arbor. Also, in a non-bearded age, I have a beard. Also, I'm philosophical, if not much of an apostate. Also, I burn my ships behind me. Also, this was, in retrospect, a bad idea.

This looks like it'll be an awesome diary. Unfortunately I don't have anything to offer you as far as info. I may have some decent bball pics on my computer at home. I'll take a look tonight.

Softball also used to have a Maize uniform (maize shirt, maize shorts), but I am sure they don't use that combination any more. There are pictures up around the stands at Alumni Field; one or two of them show the team in the Maize.

I know this is going to sound like a BS answer but I assure you I know a little bit about Michigan swimming. The men don't wear the winged caps, only the women have them and they usually wear them for blow-away meets against extremely sub-par opponents (for the most part). There are exceptions where Jim Richardson (The head coach) and the captains decided that they need a change of pace and they wear them, however, they are primarily practice caps and are used as such. As a former swimmer, I know that the majority of the time, when you represent your team/school you wear the traditional cap w/ logo. My club coach one year had neon pink caps made with our team logo on it for Nationals so that he could easily spot us during the very crowded warmup sessions, however when one of the girls tried to wear it during her race he "Fucked Shit Up," aka went ape shit. The swimteam here follows similar unwritten rules and during the majority of the meets they swim under the block M. In summary, the winged cap is not like an alternate jersey, it is a practice cap worn by the women's team, that is sometimes worn during meets against inferior opponents. I hope that helps. They are also practice caps for the women's water polo team.

Haha +1. They did bring in the pep-band for the MSU meet 2 years ago. There is a ton of irony in that statement considering how poor MSU is at swimming. I don't know the exact statistics, but IIRC MSU has beaten Michigan 2 times in the past 80 years. That's with 2 meets against each other a year. The best part about the meet was UM swimmers doing their off events and still taking the top 3 spots in each event. Sparty broke through with a 2nd place finish in the 100 breast, the 2nd to last event of the meet. That my friends, is domination.

It was perhaps one of the most annoying things ever. I don't know if you have ever been in Canham, but for those of you who have, I'll try and give you an idea of how it was set up. The pep band, between 8-10 instruments, was up in the mezzanine directly opposite the bleachers. Throughout the meet they kept trying to start chants and play music to get the crowd pumped up, much like if it was a football game. However, a football game it was not. The normally RABID swim fans (parents and family members) seemed to be more annoyed at the loud sounds coming from across the pool. I for one, located in the office below the mezzanine, was not too pleased with the sounds either. However, it WAS pretty cool to see some support thrown the swim team's way, it just wasn't properly thought out. I for one would have rather seen the cheerleaders show up in appropriate swimming attire (bikinis DUH!) to help get the crowd going, which they most certainly would have, in more ways than one. Note: Although the fans were predominantly elder relatives of the swimmers, I have no doubt that a few phone calls could have gotten quite a bit of students down to Hoover St. if the cheerleaders were dressed that way, but I guess it's only a pipe dream. Also, I would have preferred they bring out the support for a bigger meet, such as the OSU & Indiana tri-meet or the duel meet against Texas. Although we are the class of the big 10 by a margin, these meets stay relatively close with an inevitable Michigan win, except in the case of Texas, which was ranked #1 or #2 all year (we were consistently #4).

Okay, you got us. It was a setup. You see, we softball players at Elbel were sick and tired of you people being out in front of Revelli Hall on Hoover, bangin' and blarin' away with them drum-bangers and horn-blarers while we're trying to get a ballgame played. We couldn't even hear ourselves yell "Strike 1," or "Infield Fly," or "Karen, so help me God, if you close your eyes one more time when the ball is coming at you..." So we called up our friend in Canham (the guy with the very long beard) and had him take you off our hands. And then all was quiet. ...till the swimmers came running out in their swimsuits and covering their ears. Then it was pandemonium.* * and not just because our third baseman took off his clothes and started running around with the swimmers, either!

Swimming just doesn't lend itself to the usual chants and stuff. You have to cut them short at every start, and then after that it's kinda silly because no matter what's going on, the swimmers just hear background noise. I know when I was swimming (high school) we'd have appreciated some kind of support from the school, but the pep band is probably not the way to go.

I don't know what that yellowish jersey color is actually named, but it can't be maize. I'd go with either "Grey Poupon Gone Bad", or "Urine Stained Halfway House Mattress."
