Long did not submit his name for draft evaluation

Per the horse's mouth, VIA Angelique, David Long did not submit his name for draft evaluation. I'm not sure exactly if we can draw conclusions from this? But it seems relevant.

Most likely this is good news for Michigan. With a year of eligibility left you’d want to gather as much information as possible about where you project in the draft, even if he was certain he didn’t want to come back.

There are some that list Long as a Junior and some list him as a RSo.   He was injured early his freshman year and would almost certainly  be available for a medical redshirt if he were to apply after 4th year.

Not that it matters as he would never stay for a fifth year... but, NFL is still not “all-in” on RSo early entries.

IMO that means he will be back. Probably wants his degree. He's a really, really intelligent kid if you have ever listened to his interviews/heard what coaches have said about his work ethic. In team meetings, Don Brown mentioned 2 years ago that David came into the first meeting with a pad of paper taking hand written notes.

You have to imagine he would have at least requested to get a draft grade evaluation if he was thinking about going. How could he not?

Fwiw (not much), a friend told me that he heard from someone who would have a lot of reason to know that Hill and Long are both coming back.

Merry Christmas!

Edit: sorry for the confusion, it's Hill and Gentry for sure coming back, and Long is still deciding. Had a couple of Christmas Eve libations so I misremembered.

Sounds promising that he'll be back.

Although there is a putative limit of 5 draft evaluations per college team, the nfl also says 'additional players can be considered on a case by case basis'. I don't know anything, but I imagine that this is more to prevent UTEP requesting 10 evaluations for unrealistic prospects but that basically any prospect out of Michigan will be evaluated if they want.

I'll ask the obvious question, is there a deadline for submitting your name? Just hoping this is not a "hasn't YET submitted his name" kinda thing.

I’ve gotten to know David and his family over the last year and a half. His education is really important to him.  He will graduate with his degree and then go pro, it’s just who he is. He’s coming back.

Long is hard to project, because as Michigan fans, we know that opposing QBs didn’t throw the ball much at him, but his stats arent that great.

The issue is that was Michigan’s D and is Long so good that he was avoided more than other top CB’s or was it more of a fluke?

If he didn’t submit, that usually means he’s coming back. I’ve been involved w this process before with players and if they don’t submit it usually means they are coming back. Even if they are 1-3 type guy. Big difference from 1st to 3rd round. 4th round is death as you have to sign for a extra year.
