Long BR non-X's & O's [=fluff] piece on Larry Prout

Submitted by superstringer on

(OK, It's BleacherReport, so if you have an inherent disdain for all things BR, avert ye eyes, and don't say I didn't warn you.)

But... It's a LONG piece on Larry and his relationship with the team, with stories of "Granda Jack" and Newsome etc. etc.  Probably no surprises here, but just great to see it again and again.

I cant adequately explain why but for some reason the description of the article as a "fluff piece" kinda bothered me.   Like he's not that important or something.

I dont think that's the way you meant it - maybe it's just me.

Some people call a football article a fluff piece because it’s just a paper, like Freep, trying to get clicks on common sense BS. I believe that this is the correct use of the term.

I have noticed on here that people are calling articles like this a fluff piece, which lacks a lot of football X’s and O’s substance, but offers a lot of off the field substance instead. It may not be the correct way of using the term, but I’m guessing that’s what the OP meant.

Combine the beloved (Larry Prout Jr.) with the loathed (Bleacher Report).  I'm guessing that the rightful affection for Larry Prout Jr. overwhelms the rightful general disdain for BR.

Bold* move on the part of the OP to post this, and glad the OP did it.

*"Bold" in the sense of ordering the General's Chicken "four pepper" spicy**.  Not like donning a wingsuit and jumping off an Alpen cliff bold.

**Not to undersell this, though.  I mean, "four pepper" spicy?  It'll tear through every mucus membrane along the ol' alimentary canal of a weaker diner.  Yaaaaaarrrrrgh!

Please reserve "fluff" to describe articles that are primarily intended to praise people who are in the public eye, who perform for the public, and whose performances are therefore open to criticism as a normal editorial and journalistic practice. E.g., athletes, artists, politicians.

Larry Prout Jr. doesn't qualify as someone who can have a "fluff" piece written about him.

Damn. Such a remarkable young man, such a story. Regardless of how we feel about JOK, the guy has a great heart on him. This is the positive stuff we should focus on vs. the mountain of the negatives. I’ll try to remember that.

Not a great look, to sit here and openly weep at work. My how the least among us can have the greatest impact. A great friendship for Larry, but I'm sure these are the things that John will remember most from his time here as well.

Proud of these two.

"We have a thing in our family, and it goes back a long, long way: Attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. Each and every time I see Larry, I think to myself he epitomizes that more than anyone I have been around." — Jack Harbaugh

thought you were having a rough day?  maybe not so much.

For years I have been putting the "create an Mgoblog account" on my To Do List. Finally I have been prompted to do so. Echoing some of the comments above and taking them further, I met John O'Korn last November, on the Graveyard Walk to Bo's grave (and to the graves of Yost and Ufer). I was surprised to discover that there was only one current member of the team who was on the Walk with all of us, and that team member was John O'Korn (who was there with his former roommate Jake Ruddock - and a shoutout here to Ruddock who took time out from his Detroit Lions practice squad duties at the time to be there). After O'Korn (and Ruddock) had been "outed" at the last stop (Yost's grave) by someone's announcement (it was dark and neither I, nor most of those on the Walk, I assume, realized up until that point that O'Korn had been walking with us the entire evening), O'Korn gave a heartfelt speech about how honored and humbled he felt to be allowed to attend the University of Michigan and to be a member of the University of Michigam football team. One could not help but be struck by the fact that this young man, a transfer from another school who everyone had expected would be Michigan's starter just a few month's earlier, was the lone current member of the team that was present - nor could one help but be impressed by the manner in which he expressed his love for Michigan and everything Bo stood for. I was not, therefore, at all surprised to learn more of his relationship with Larry Prout. John O'Korn is a special young man and epitomizes everything one wants a Michigan Man to be. And thank you Larry Prout, for being such an inspiration to all of us.

...an exceptional young man. The kindness and love shown to Larry by the coaches and players of the Wolverine football team certainly cause one to be proud of our Michigan Men. Go Blue!

What a great story it would be if O'Korn plays well enough on Saturday to pull off the upset. He's got a final shot at redemption as a football player (which he certainly doesn't need as a person). I'll be rooting for him extra hard. Go Blue!
