Lion Kim - Cut Line Thread

Submitted by MichLove on

I thought this deserved a seperate thread seeing as though it looks like it may be a battle for Lion to stay above the cut line. 1 under through 2 to start his 2nd round - right now projected to make the cut!

Go Blue and Go Lion!

I was about to make a "Kim watch" thread.  Another early birdy today puts him above the projected cutline.  I'd expect that line to move slightly downward (worse score) as the day goes on also.   He had a great round yesterday with the exception of that double.

I believe that cut is top 44 including ties and anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.  Because the leader is currently at -7, the projected cut line is for anyone over +3.   I would guess that someone is going to finish the day with a score better than -7.  I think that for Lion to make the cut, he is going to have to get to Even or maybe +1.  Not impossible, but would require an unbelievable round.

as the one poster said, the cut for the masters is determined by being in the Top 44 (ties included) or within 10 strokes of the lead.  Right now Kin is projected to make the cut based upon being within 10 strokes of the leaders.  With the leaders just starting or not even having teed off yet, the leader will probably be around -10 or better at the end of the day.

Based upon how scores are so far, it looks like it could be another good day for scoring.  Kim is going to need to have a very good round today to make the cut.

Yesterday Kim played them at +2 and today he played them E - let's see if he can sneak out another birdie before the turn!

-1 on the day thru 6

The projected cut is +2 right now.  He'll need to get 1 back to reach that level and probably 2 to feel safe at +1.

Edit: nevermind, just realized that cut is probably based off of being within 10 of the current leaders.  He's gonna have to play lights-out the rest of the way.

Yeah, Choi and Quiros are tearing it up right now at -8.  KJ Choi is -3 for the day, so I wouldn't feel comfortable at +2 as the ultimate cutline. We're probabyl looking at E at worst.  Karlson is currently #44 and he's even (hasn't started rd 2 yet).

Lion has acquitted himself well.  So far:

  • Matsuyama even through 15 (started the day even)
  • Uihlein +2 through 9 (started the day even)
  • Chung +3 through 7 (started the day even)
  • Kim +3 through 13 (started the day +4)
  • Smith finished the round at +8 (started the day +3)
  • Jeong has not started his second round, but he finished day 1 at +1

Quick note about Matsuyama - apparently, he's from Sendai, which was hard-hit by the tsunami, so he's a sentimental favorite and also playing extremely well given his situation back home.   Good for him.

to have a chance of making the cut.  Maybe there'll be some tough conditions this evening.

I am not enjoying his choice of white pants and green shirt today.

Notable golfers likely to finish tied with or behind Lion include:

  • World #1 Martin Kaymer
  • Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen
  • Vijay Singh
  • Justin Rose
  • Jose Maria Olazabel
  • Stuart Appleby
  • Hunter Mahan
  • Ernie Els
  • Davis Love III
  • Former Masters Champion Mike Weir

And there are certainly others.  This is a very good showing even if he can't make the cut.

Expecting the Public LInks champion to make the cut is unrealistic.  What's most important for Kim is that he enjoys the experience and that he takes home a first-hand understanding of what it takes to get to the next level.

He will now have this experience to draw on while playing amateur golf, and no matter what happens, it can't be taken away from him.  It the cut does drop to +4, great.  But Kim represented both himself and his school with class and showed some talent along the way, too.

In golf, that matters more than it does in other sports.  And until players in other sports start calling penalties on themselves becuase it is the honorable thing to do, it always will.

  • Chung, +4 at 14 (+4 for the day so far)
  • Jeong, +4 at 6 (+3 for the day so far)
  • Uihlein, +5 at 16 (+5 for the day)
  • Smith, finished at +8 (+5 for the day)

Hell of a 2nd round for Kim.  He improved 4 strokes on yesterday's score even though it seems like the course is playing harder today.
